Solution #1: Streaming video driver
Written by cslee-ubuntu the 20 Feb 12 at 21:45.
A kernel driver offering a virtual graphics card that X or any other display software could be configured to use as a display.

This would then be available on a port on the network interface (depending on the configured format) for modern multimedia televisions to access and stream the content over the network.

GRUB is useless for many users
Written by cslee-ubuntu the 21 Sep 12 at 18:52. Global category: Usability. New
When the user interface for grub is displayed ther are a few lines which require good eyesight and dexterity to use, let alone the ability to read.
It needs to move with the times.

Solution #1: Icons and touch screen/mouse support
Written by cslee-ubuntu the 21 Sep 12 at 18:52.
To make the boot process more user friendly when more than one option is available having icons instead of tiny rows of text would make the options more obvious.
Allowing a user to touch the icons or use a mouse would also make the process more easy.
On tablet devices you get to go to the default option more often than is ideal unless you plug in a keyboard.

Improve usability by allowing file properties to be edited
Written by cslee-ubuntu the 8 Aug 10 at 13:34. Related project: Nautilus. Not an idea
In the file properties dialogue there are a few tabs and only some of the data is editable.
Specifically in the Document or Image etc. tabs in the dialogue there are fields like the tags field that one would expect could be edited in place.

Solution #1: Allow users to edit properties Nautilus is displaying
Written by cslee-ubuntu the 8 Aug 10 at 13:34.
Nautilus has collected the data and displayed it, if it can be changed Nautilus should allow this.

Improve productivity by showing more
Written by cslee-ubuntu the 24 May 12 at 11:12. Related project: Unity. New
When using Ubuntu there are a few places that show previews of the windows that ca be selected like the Unity Bar and the Alt Tab switcher.
In a lot of cases applications have tabs with content and it would improve usability to see the content that I am trying to get to.

Solution #1: Preview of Windows with stacked tab content
Written by cslee-ubuntu the 24 May 12 at 11:12.
For each window that has tabs provide the tabs as a stack of windows.
So in the Unity bar if clicking/hovering over the icon you see all the windows of that application that are open and for each one a stack of tabs.
In Alt Tab as you tab to an application and it splits to show open windows it would show the tabs staked on each window.
Then if using the mouse a user could click the visible part of the tab they want to go there directly.

An enhancement to this would be to roll through the tabs while the window was selected/under the mouse so that the user can see and select the tab they want to go to.

Switch to tablet/touch screen mode and it makes switching apps and app windows much simpler as once in this display sliding the windows and tabs around by hand would make selection very quick and easy.

Solution #2: use control tab
Written by theQxQ the 20 Mar 13 at 20:36.
on most browsers, control tab switches between the tabs. however, on most applications, this behavior doesn't work. this should be default behavior

Make NFS shares esily discoverable on the network
Written by cslee-ubuntu the 19 Mar 12 at 22:11. Global category: Internet & Networking. New
When I select network on my system it shows Microsoft shares but not the NFS volumes available.
NFS shares are all over the newtork but are not easily discoverable by tools like the network browser.

Solution #1: Make NFS register and unregister DNS SRV records
Written by cslee-ubuntu the 19 Mar 12 at 22:11.
These days most systems have access to dynamic DNS.
If NFS was able to register SRV records when it started and unregister them when it stopped then browsing tools could esily locate the NFS shares and offer the chance to mount them using the gvfs etc.

Make text files more powerfull from the GUI
Written by cslee-ubuntu the 28 Jul 10 at 20:44. Related project: Nautilus. New
When in the command line I have various powerful text manipulation tools that make text file work easy.
In the GUI I can copy paste and edit and most GUI editors require that I do the heavy lifting.

Solution #1: Text files expandable to "directories" with contents as "files"
Written by cslee-ubuntu the 28 Jul 10 at 20:44.
In Nautilus show a text file as normal but with the option to expand it like a directory showing sub sections as individual files.
e.g. an XML file called "bob" containing multiple sub sections opens up to a directory view with sub sections listed as files like "bob.address", "bob.age" etc. each can be edited or deleted or dragged into another file.
the . file should contain the XML structure surrounding the sub sections.
For many text configuration files there are "accepted" layouts which could allow this method of text file work to be performed.
