Give Ubuntu it's own calendar
Written by amosharper the 28 Feb 08 at 17:11. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
It's great that clicking on the clock brings up a calendar - but why Evolution's calendar?

The majority of people use a webmail service, so having a calendar that can sync with major web calendars (eg Google Calendar, Windows Live Calendar), that is easy to add and remove events to, to add alarms and notifications and to be able to do all of this without opening an email application would be fantastic, I think.

Thanks for the oppurtunity to be heard.

Implement traffic shaping

Written by Eldmannen the 11 Apr 08 at 02:37. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Example, if I download updates for Ubuntu, or I download some torrent file, or something, then I don't want my important stuff such as SSH, IRC, IM, VoIP to get lagged.

So you have the important traffic prioritized, and have non-important traffic like apt-get and torrents de-prioritized.

This way I can do stuff like listen to online radio without skips, or play an online game without lag, or administer a server remotely with SSH without type-lag, have a VoIP conversation without skips, or chat on IRC or Pidgin without delays, all the same time while I am fetching updates, and downloading movies on BitTorerent.

More flexible Preferred Applications and behaviors configuration
Written by jmb0007 the 29 Feb 08 at 19:23. Category: Installation. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
rhythmbox, totem, pigdin are some of the some default applications for Ubuntu.
We should find a way to allow every body to use it's own preferred applications

The "Preferred applications" and "Removable Drives and media selector" should be merged in a "Preferred Applications and behaviors".
Some new categories should be add like :
-Instant messaging
-burn cd (preferred app for Places-> CD/DVD Creator)
-Search files (preferred app for Places-> shearch for files)

There are a lot of idea on default application :
- idea #1675: Better Preferred Applications dialog
- idea #1276: Create a global preference for media formats
- idea #1150: Gnome applet with favorite applications
- idea #1686: Make VLC & Banshee default Media Players
- idea #374: Quod Libet as the default Music organizer

A centralize configurations for "Preferred Applications and behaviors" will be a good solutions for all this ideas

A better Nautilus and Evolution search, search as you type
Written by egroj the 12 Mar 08 at 15:02. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Ctrl-F in Nautilus should work the way it does in Firefox, filtering files and folders that contain that part, not that begin with that part. Search as you type is ideal too.
In Evolution when you look for your contacts or for emails, search should be "as you type" too, like it is in Thunderbird

Remove Ebay from default search engines list in firefox
Written by Auzy the 22 Mar 08 at 01:06. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Firefox. New
Based on idea 5321, by Eldmannen (about removing yahoo).

We should remove ebay from the default installed searches, because:
- It reduces competition with other auction sites.
- Recently there was a uproar about changes in ebay which make in some case make it unfair. I agree!
- Ebay VERY heavily pushes Paypal, which is acknowledged by many to be very dodgy. A lot of people know someone who has been screwed by ebay. And here in aus, I had to upgrade my account because they had a bug which prevented me accessing my money (which is very unprofessional). The freenet Project owner was also screwed by ebay (and it demonstrated they don't research at all claims made against customers), and another friend of mine was charged 2x the amount he was supposed to be receiving because someone used a stolen credit card against him (so seems they profit from illegal credit cards).
- If ebay was a bank, they would have a 24/7 riot outside their building by customers who were screwed.
- Ebay doesn't exactly listen to feedback. If are a typical large company, where you have no way of providing feedback (if you scream at them over the phone, maybe they will let you speak to a manager). But they clearly dont care much (no forums).

Its to our advantage to promote competition within the auction sites. More competition means lower costs for us, and better payment methods. We should try to encourage the development of a world wide auction site that is more consumer/seller friendly, that actually promotes active feedback and improvement.

There is nothing stopping a patch being applied to the firefox code to prevent ebay being a default search engine (and it shouldn't be hard to do).

There is a wide community of online artists capable of creating brilliant, unique artwork.

heading: Get your artwork on 10 million desktops

Ubuntu, the world's most popular Linux distribution, needs a new theme. The winner will appear in the default desktop of Ubuntu 8.10.

We're looking for original wallpapers, that match Ubuntu's color palette. You entry should also include a suggested combination of application, icon, and window themes. These can be existing themes, or your own original works - you only need to submit a wallpaper to win.

Work must be CC licensed, and be openable in either Inkscape or Gimp (rest of criteria continues)

Submit your works to DeviantArt and include the words [Ubuntu810].

Good luck!

Developer comments
At this point in time it is unclear as to whether we can realize something like this. In any case we cannot promise to include anything as default without having already seen it. This might be a good way to find alternative wallpapers to also include on the CD and/or universe as an extra package.

Codec Manager
Written by intarwub the 29 Feb 08 at 00:32. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. Already implemented
As a user I want to be able to listen to audio or watch videos with the least amount of setup. I would like to have a single interface (Codec Manager) that lists all of the most common audio and video formats and shows me if I am missing the necessary codec for playback.

Use Case: Enable MP3 playback.
Precondition: MP3s are not currently playable.
1. User logs into the system.
2. User opens the Codec Manager.
3. System displays a list of common audio/video formats.
4. User selects MP3s.
5. System displays some info about MP3s.
6. System displays a list of available codecs.
7. User selects a codec and clicks Apply.
8. System downloads and installs the selected codec.
9. System informs the user when completed.

Other possible features:
- Display a list of audio/video types that are missing codecs.
- An auto-setup function, that grabs the recommended codec for all formats.

Audio and Video formats that should be supported:

Audio:
- MP3
- OGG
- AAC
- FLAC
- Real Audio

Video:
- MP4

[....]

Developer comments
Attacks the problem from the wrong angle. I don't think many users would care about a "codec manager", that sounds very much like a geek tool. Heck, *I* wouldn't care about a codec manager. I care about watching my videos. :-)

To me this already seems solved very elegantly with the existing easy-codec-installation.

Hi!

I'm a big fan of Images like .iso.
But it is not very easy to mount this Images.
I think there must be a Tool in Nautilus and Dolphin wich alows mounting Images with a double Click. (This feature exists int MacOS). Or with a right click on the file and then there must be a poit "Mount Image". I thick that would be a very use full Tool for every one.
A good example for this is CDemu.

I know there are some ohter good programs, but I think that would be the easyest way and very confortible.

Ubuntu's bootloader is a stark black and white screen, filled with confusing options. It gives newbies a moment of indecision, as they try to figure out if they are supposed to choose something, and wonder why there are three or four Ubuntus listed. Then the timer finishes counting down (starting from 10), and the newb begins to feel like he's getting in over his head as his PC boots into Ubuntu.

Too much information up front, stark text-only display, painfully long countdown timer. What would be the alternative? Well, when a Fedora PC is booted up, the first thing the user sees is a graphical splash screen, and "Booting into Fedora (kernel version) in 4 seconds ... " The user can press a key to interrupt and select from kernel versions or alternative operating systems, or just let it boot into Fedora.

Can't we create our own attractive bootloader? Or, failing that, copy-and-paste Fedora's?

gksudo if I try to do an action I don't have access to
Written by cope the 12 Mar 08 at 08:27. Category: Accessibility. Related to: Nothing/Others. Won't implement
This should only apply if the logged in user has an entry in sudoers..

If I try to create a new folder, and I don't have access it should prompt me for my password (gksudo), and preform the action. This should occur for copy/paste, and all sorts of other functions that instead we have to drop to the shell..

I mainly 'sudo nautilus .' when I need to do this, but its a little clunky, don't you agree?

Developer comments
To be honest, I really don't like this idea. The clear separation between "user data/permissions" and administration is a very strong point in Unix/Linux, and we should keep it. Providing a button for "give me a super-power nautilus" is too blunt, and subverts
(a) our efforts to provide the necessary administrative bits through appropriate UI (like NetworkManager),
(b) our efforts to provide more fine-grained privileges (PolicyKit) and eventually get rid of gksu, and
(c) leads into the Administrator madness Windows users have to endure.

I'd rather collect use cases why users need to run nautilus as root in the first place, and eliminate those.

Mount removable storage synchronously
Written by jez9999 the 28 Feb 08 at 23:50. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
When you plug in something like a USB dongle, it should be mounted synchronously (-o sync) instead of in buffered mode.

For me, this is far preferable to the minute performance gain gotten by mounting the device in buffered mode. You're very unlikely to be using such devices for anything except data storage/retreival, in which case mounting synchronously is a major benefit. Expecting new users (or those used to Windows XP's behaviour) to know you have to right-click, 'unmount', before removing the drive is not a good idea, as well as just being unnecessary if the device is mounted synchronously. It's also irritating for people like me who know you need to do it, but either occasionally forget or don't want to bother.

Mount the thing synchronously by default. This is what Windows XP does, and it allows you to just remove the drive after any file transfers have finished. Yes, problems will occur if you remove it durung a file transfer, but that's gonna happen in ANY mount mode. It's far more obvious to the user that this will cause a problem than removal of the drive before unmounting. Also stop displaying that 'unsafe device removal' message for devices mounted synchronously.

alt+tilda
Written by cope the 8 Mar 08 at 22:00. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I also use a mac, and alt+tilda cycles through the current windows of the application that is active..

i.e. lets say you have 3 terminals open, and 2xfirefox and 1xevolution.

ALT+TAB cycles through every instance of every application.
Lets say I have terminal focused, if I ALT+TILDA it will cycle only through the terminals, and not every other window!

Make Tilda available by default
Written by oencke the 29 Feb 08 at 13:51. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
In the early days of FPS games every beginner learned the secrets of the dropdown console because it was quick and easy to reach for and more powerful than the options dialogs. It also felt not like any random dialog box but like the intended direct wire to talk to the program core.

My suggestion would be to integrate an up-to-date (compiz ready) version of Tilda in Ubuntu as a default way to reach for a terminal. Putting it on a keyboard shortcut like F12 and making it 100% width and something like 35-40% height dropping down from the top with a black on white (maybe a little transparent) background makes it feel like it is one with the upper panel bar and not like some random empty window opening on a menu click on terminal.

Maybe this way we might get a better acceptance of the cli with new users. We wouldn't have to explain what a terminal is, what its advantages and how to get to it, we could tell people to just press "F12", copy-paste "this and that", confirm with "Enter" and press "F12" again. Easy to follow, easy to accept, easy to live by.
