Improve file/folder sharing experience (Samba)
Written by bartong the 29 Feb 08 at 01:35. Global category: Internet & Networking. Implemented
Currently it is very difficult to setup and control access to shared folders without editing conf files and reading detailed instructions on all the variables. I propose that sharing (specifically Samba) be given a well worked GUI and some real TLC to bring it up to standard with the experience on Windows or OS X.

Selected solution (#1): Defaults and GUI Options adjusted appropriately
Written by bartong the 29 Feb 08 at 01:35.
By default a share should be accessible as Read Only by anyone on the network without a username or password (guest access). While guest access should be turned on by default, it should also be easy to turn it off, and if desired to give guests read/write access to the folder.

You should also be able to specify local users who will have read/write access, and these local users should sync with smb users invisibly (ie: the user doesn't need to know that there are two password databases being used).

The Properties window for a folder should contain a Sharing tab with all the options available to choose. I also propose a Shared Folders option in the Preferences menu should list the currently shared folders along with their settings, and provide a button to take you into the dialogue where you can set the options.

Selected solution (#4): Samba Server Configuration Wizard
Written by Agafonov the 18 Nov 09 at 21:29.
We need a simple to use step-by-step wizard which will ask some really simple questions and generate an smb.conf file based on the user's choices.
How about https://launchpad.net/sscw ? It is a working example, although right now it's using zenity. If re-written using python it would become a very handy companion to nautilus-share.
We even should not include smb.conf in the samba package: once installed, samba server will not work until the user has defined how it should behave.

Selected solution (#5): Share Sub-Folders by Default
Written by Klau3 the 11 Mar 10 at 01:51.

Right now, when right clicking on a folder and selecting “Sharing Options” – for example you want to share your Music folder and create a guest access to it – Samba will only share the files within the music folder but NOT THE SUB-FOLDERS where all the music is.

When sharing a folder, most people want to give access to sub-folders. For that reason, I suggest to reverse the handling of Samba sharing, so that you would have to click on an extra box to show that you don't want Samba to share sub-folders.

Selected solution (#7): Allow Ubuntu to change the mounting options of FAT partitions
Written by qwerty800 the 6 Feb 11 at 21:05.
I personally have a file depot on my network where users can drop the files they want everyone to access.
It used to be on a NTFS partition, but is now hosted on the samba network. Doing such was a fairly hard task, since NTFS doesn't save permissions for each file, and is mounted with the 700 permission, while Samba requires XX4 or superior. I had to modify my fstab config file for that, and that's definitively not what I'd call user-friendly.

Selected solution (#9): Centralized file-sharing administration
Written by komputes the 17 Aug 11 at 22:42.
The question on many user's mind is "What am I sharing (and to whom)?"

“System > Administration > Shared folders” is a feature that has been removed since 8.04. There has been no replacement for this tool since its disappearance.

Solution is to create a utility that should provide a graphical front-end to configure both samba system shares (managed in /etc/samba/smb.conf) and samba usershares (/var/lib/samba/usershares/).

Stepping a bit outside the scope of the issue (samba), this application should have a pluggable infrastructure which can also be used to show and configure other types of shares (nfs, ftp, ubuntuone).

Central administration, what a concept!

user-friendly error messages
Written by cumulus007 the 18 Sep 08 at 14:25. Related project: Gnome. New
"Make Desktop Linux Better than Apple" is the title of this article: http://www.eweek.com/c/a/Linux-and-Open-Source/Shuttleworth-Make-Desktop-Linux- Better-than-Apple/. Well, if they want to make it better, it has to be user friendly. And the error messages in Ubuntu mostly aren't user friendly. They don't explain:

-How to fix the problem
-The reason of the problem in noob-understandable language

For complex and difficult problems, a link to a page in the Ubuntu User Guide would be nice.
Advanced users want to see the technical error message, so a details section should be added. The details section can be collapsed.

I think this can be done easily by using a common framework integrated into GNOME.

Merged from http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/13011/ :

When possible, a Revert button should be added to the message. This button will fix the error automatically, in case of an interrupted package install, for example.

I made a mockup for this:

http://img179.imageshack.us/img179/9004/schermafdrukerrormessagov9.png

I did this in Glade.

More info about media in Nautilus' statusbar
Written by forteller the 4 Sep 08 at 13:41. Related project: Nautilus. Not an idea
When I select a music file, video file or picture in Nautilus I would like to get some basic information about them in the status bar:

- For video and music: Length and quality.
- For pictures: Size (in pixels)

I think it's annoying that I have to open a movie just to find out how long it is.

Touchpad and mouse with individual sensitivity settings   forum
Written by Bromskloss the 29 Mar 08 at 21:07. Global category: Hardware support. New
Multiple pointer devices, e.g. one touchpad and one mouse, might require different sensitivity settings.

If mice report their model to the computer (they do, right?), reasonable default settings could be kept in a database and mabye adjusted according to how the user has adjusted the settings of other devices. Any changes the user makes should of course be remembered until next time the same mouse gets plugged in.

With or without a database, a window could pop up the first time a particular model is plugged in, allowing the user to adjust the settings.

== From merges ==
When can this be needed?

(paste from a duplicate idea)
Problem: I'm using a trackpad that I sometimes attach a USB mouse to, so I switch between using the trackpad and using the usb mouse, but when the movement and acceleration for the trackpad is sufficiently fast to move around the screen comfortably, it magnifies the usb mouse movement drastically, requiring careful cramped movement of the usb mouse to navigate because it's using the same movement speed and acceleration settings as the trackpad.

Add "Quote" button below comments box and notify it whith an email
Written by BlackLukes the 30 Mar 08 at 12:00. Related project: brainstorm.ubuntu.com. New
I think adding a "Quote" button on comments about an idea could be useful. When a brainstorm user quote a comment of another user and write below another comment, brainstorm should provide to send an email to that user who posted the first comment notifying that there's an answer of his comment.

E.G.

Whithout Quote Button:

I comment an idea. An user called Jake doesn't agree to my comment and post another comment to explain what's wrong with my opinion on that idea. I don't follow anymore the idea I commented so I can't read what Jake wrote.

With Quote button:

I comment an idea. An user called Jake doesn't agree to my comment and post another comment to explain what's wrong with my opinion on that idea. Brainstorm send me an Email that tells me that someone answered or quoted a comment of mine. That email provides me the link of the idea. I click on the link so I can read what Jake wrote and I answer to him. Then he answer again etc.

The email sending should be an option, and I suggest a creation of a new section in the user menu, something like this: "Your Messages been quoted or answered", and into this section there should be a list of all the messages been quoted or answered.

I hope you understood what I'm trying to say.

Solution #2: Add audio settings button to every window's top panel
Written by Kiwii the 8 Jul 11 at 17:13.
It would be handy if there were a volume control and device selection button right on an audio enabled application's top panel. So the users knows exactly where to control the volume of wich application. It could be in the top-right corner of each app that is playing or listening to sound in unity.

Move/Highlight post solving a problem to the top (ubuntuforums)
Written by tom the 2 Jul 08 at 10:23. Related project: ubuntuforums.org. New
It is sometimes difficult to find the post within a thread in the forums which actually solved a problem. Sometimes it is on the 1st page, then it is easy. What happen, when it is on the 12th out of 44? Then have fun reading all posts... you have to go through the whole thread looking for this entry.

What about implementing a function, where the post (or even multiple helpful posts) with the solution is highlighted by the thread author (or moderator). This/these post(s) could even moved to the top, below the initial post. This would save a lot of time hunting for a solution within the forums.

What do you think?

As an example, have a look at the PCWorld.com forums. Thanks to chipbennett.

Expansion of Add Remove Programs - show user-provided descriptions, feature lists, screenshots, comments, ratings, integration with launchpad. Initial page should be top-rated apps, or newest apps. Managed by a webapp?

Or... leave it as it is, but create a website displaying all the great software available for ubuntu including all the features mentioned above with apturl links to install.

From #4613 (merged):

It should be indicated how much I'll have to download to install something.

We have download limits here and well... quite often I exceed them. It would be useful to indicate how big the download is going to be.

Written by snadrus the 5 Mar 08 at 23:45. Global category: Look and Feel. New
A feature that's possible but not intuitive in Ubuntu today is the setting up of one PC as "multiple workstations" - i.e. connecting two keyboards, two mice and two monitors to one PC and having two users log in and work independently.

I would love to see this feature made simpler to set up, as it would be great for a lot of home users (e.g. buying a one powerful computer instead of 2 or 3 computers for the kids), as well as in schools, internet cafes etc.

Solution #2: A multiple screen HID-functionality selector
Written by BayerBear the 17 Aug 09 at 18:35.
A program functionality that pops up when more than one screen, mouse and/or keyboard are connected or present. Gives the user a choice between the standard 'extended desktop' functionality, and making a new desktop session where the specified keyboard and/or mouse are channeled/piped. Also implement 'swap'-hot keys for swapping mouse and/or keyboard.

Hot-key example: AltGr+M(or something) makes the first mouse that clicks both rigth and left button at the same time swap to the screen were the keyboard entry was made. A keyboard 'swap'-hot key for selecting another screen (bringing the nested mouse with it or not) would be easy.

Of course, system administrator must have the ability to lock HIDs to specific screens.

Solution #6: Multiseat Administration GUI for advanced users using a graph
Written by testian the 18 Nov 10 at 11:44.
users should be able to configure their multiseat-configuration by "drawing" a mathematical graph that displays which input device points to which pointer, which session and finally which monitor. The advantages of a graph are that you can easily model N:M relations (a session can run on multiple monitors, but multiple sessions can also run on one monitor).
