First of all: What is the difference between Preferences and Administration? For example: why do I see 'Encryption and Keyrings' in Preferences and 'Keyring Manager' in Administration? What is the difference between 'Default Printer' and 'Printing'? Why do I have to disable the Tracker under Sessions and not under Search and Indexing? And why are these menu's so large? I have 24 items in Preferences (they don't even fit on my screen!) and 18 items in Administration. To put all this stuff in a popup menu is bad interface design imho. Besides, the number of option should be much smaller. A few suggestions:

- Merge 'Screensaver', 'Screen Resolution' and 'Screens and Graphics'.
- Merge 'Network', 'Network Proxy' and 'Network Tools'.
- Merge 'Update Manager, Synaptic Package Manager, Software Sources'.
- Merge 'Encryption and Keyrings', 'Authorizations', 'Keyring Manager'.

Below are all settings I can visit via the System menu. This is just way too much.

-- Preferences --
Universal Access
About Me
Appearance
Bluetooth
Default Printer
Encryption and Keyrings
Keyboard
Keyboard Shortcuts
Main Menu
Mouse
Network Proxy
PalmOS Devices (I don't have one)
Power Management

Ubuntu Mobile on the EeePC, cloudbook, olpc
Written by clonedagain the 3 Mar 08 at 22:38. Category: Hardware support. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Ubuntu Mobile is targeting Intel MIDs for the moment, but the eeePC is so close to it in spirit that UME could be a very nice alternative to the default Xandros shipped by Asus.

The machine is really cheap and it seems popular. It doesn't have a touchscreen though.

Ubuntu works on the eee, but people report various hzrdware problems (not tried myself yet).

Update to upstream packages for userland applications
Written by Yodude the 3 Mar 08 at 21:32. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I understand why Ubuntu freezes its repositories with each release, for stability and reliability reasons. I would want to have a corrupt libc package after I updated my system now would I ? But where's the harm in shipping the newest version of compiz fusion for example ? Let's say I found a serious bug in compiz fusion (which i DID find) which is affecting the productivity on my Ubuntu system, the way things are now : I would submit a bug report, wait for a reply, the bug will probably be fixed upstream, but i still wouldn't get any fixes delivered to me, I have to wait till the next Ubuntu release ! This methodology of delivering an up-to-date system should be planned all over again.

Add more often updates for Netbeans, Eclipse and their plugins
Written by develvic the 1 Mar 08 at 10:39. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Because of active development of Netbeans IDE we need more often updates. For example, last patch available for NetBeans 6.0.1 (2008-02-20) but in repository only Netbeans 5.5

Make a default Desktop distribution for Ubuntu Server
Written by wsiabato the 29 Feb 08 at 14:41. Category: Server. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Initially I doesn't make sense, I know it. But, some times when you try to install the Gnome or KDE desktop after the default installation it doesn´t work very well or at all.
It supposed to be a server system for Linux experts (and it is absolutely well done), but also it should consider be able to been administrated by a new web master like me.
This make sense when you install de server system in a remote sever. It is so difficult to start the GUI without an assistance service.
(Or include the option at least)
