Update the list of Cities in the World Clock!
Written by iampriteshdesai the 27 Aug 08 at 13:27. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. Not an idea
The world clock in Ubuntu seems to be behind times little bit.
It shows the city Mumbai by the name of Bombay. Bombay got renamed in 1999. So as you can see the Clock isn't lagging by much!
Also many Indian cities haven't had their names updated. These names were changed even before Ubuntu began.
Tere are many other important world cities whose names havent been updated. Plz do it since it doesnt create a good impression about Ubuntu. It is throurghly unprofessional!

Better Implementation of Different Wallpapers for Workspaces
Written by carickw the 26 Aug 08 at 20:46. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Gnome. New
I looked in the "Ideas Being Worked Upon" and went to the wallpaper for each workspace link.

It is currently set up so that "Change Desktop Wallpaper" changes the wallpaper for the current desktop. Although this works, i feel it could be better implemented by having options in the Change Desktop Wallpaper window.

I believe a set of Radio Buttons such as:

Apply to:
o Current Workspace
o All Workspaces
o Workspace (Dropdown with workspace numbers)

would work better.

Mirror (to see yourself) in Compiz
Written by HermanChess the 27 Aug 08 at 07:52. Category: Others. Related to: Compiz. New
If people have webcams, I think its a nice idea to have a face of the cube that is actually a mirror, that is to see yourself in full screen. So let's say you want to have a quick check on yourself, you do "ctrl + alt + up" and it changes to the mirror. Im saying compiz because it can actually make the whole cube more useful, but it can be a separate piece of software, that can be nicely integrated with a good shortcut.

What is keyring good for?
Written by Richard.Kolodziej the 26 Aug 08 at 22:26. Category: Accessibility. Related to: Gnome. New
Lets forget that I really don't know what a (or "the") keyring is good for and look at the other people who cannot set their computer up by them self.

I don't remember on which occasions I was asked, but the question was something like: "Would you like to add this password to your keyring?"
Or different: "Enter a new password to the keyring."

"No, I don't want to enter a new password, I already have a password! Why do I have to create another one?"

I am sure that there is a good reason for keyring to exist but it wasn't explained to me. I know, I am supposed to look it up on the internet but here comes the idea:

It would be great if there was a short explanatory sentence about keyring - what it is good for and why I have to write another password - when I'm being asked for a keyring password.

System Monitor gives description of processes   forum
Written by justinr the 26 Aug 08 at 15:32. Category: Documentation. Related to: Add/Remove program dialog. New
(see screenshot: http://i37.tinypic.com/296no6t.png )

In System Monitor, there is a list of processes with various information. The idea is that in this process list, when an item is clicked, a panel on the right would give a description of that process. (What package it is part of, link to the man page, link to documentation, typical behavior)

This would be useful, because usually if you are attempting to identify what processes are running, and why - you will find the process name and start googling it to find out what package it is part of.

When I do this, I can usually see that others have googled to find out the same information. (One example is seeing two gdm instances..the info could show that it's typical to see two instances of this)

The info pages could also be set up via 'wiki'

This would also be very educational for getting newbies more comfortable with system processes and familiar with linux architecture.

better artwork team is needed
Written by Murtadh the 23 Aug 08 at 15:01. Category: Graphics. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Ubuntu needs better artwork. Everybody know Fedora and Opensuse look better than ubuntu.
I'm not trying to say that the look is more important than the OS or the current theme is ugly but lets be honest the look is the first impression.

I appreciate the current efforts from ubuntu, but with this level of art I don't think "Ubuntu will surpass Apple in two years" as what Mark Shuttleworth said. I know there are a lot of buzz around deviantart this days, and I hope it makes some changes in intrepid, but with my full respect for the community contribution with the OS; ubuntu should have an artwork team which can be creative and handle this work correctly.

advanced battery charging mode
Written by trylik the 20 Aug 08 at 12:25. Category: Hardware support. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
when i bought ibm x40 there was win xp by default, it was loaded with special manager for battery - there was an option about charging - you could choose battery saver mode - when you turn it on - your battery first discharges to almost 0%, then charge to 100%

this is of course nice feature, because it saves battery life a lot, but of course it is usable only if you use laptop at home for loger time

i would also like to have an option to refresh battery - in nikon d1 series there is option like this, also there are a lot of chargers for AA batteries, with this function

it just charges to 100% then to 0% a couple of times (i might be wrong with this, expert should confirm it), say 10 times

this would be really great for laptops, and something that windows surely dont have out of the box

Compositing in GTK+ and Qt
Written by steampoweredlawngnome the 19 Aug 08 at 06:11. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Gnome. New
We have composited window managers (Compiz and KDE4's kwin to name the two best known), but I'd like to see the content of the windows themselves support compositing. As I understand it, compositors like Compiz treat what's inside the confines of the window as one unit, and do not recognize the individual elements, menus excluded.

An example would be, say, allowing a composited GTK+ theme to alter the opacity of Nautilus, while leaving the content boxes opaque for visibility.

I created a crude mockup to show what I mean:

http://picasaweb.google.com/steampoweredlawngnome/LinuxMockupIdeas/photo#523610 1676680115298

Superficially, this would provide yet more useless eye candy, but even on that point alone, eye candy is often what gets people interested in GNU/Linux in the first place. The other benefits keep them using it once the novelty of wobbly windows, spinning cubes and painting the desktop with fire have worn off.

Aside from eye candy though, I think in-window compositing could have many far-reaching benefits, including providing better usability for visually impaired users and adding powerful enhancements to video & graphic design applications.

If used tastefully, it could also provide a new level of visual refinement.

I see there is something similar in the form of the Murrine GTK+ engine, allowing transparency effects on window backgrounds, but from what I gather this does not provide nearly the same comprehensive set of features of full 3D rendered compositing.

Increase the range of choices for sleep and power management beyond 1 hour.
Written by tchalvakspam the 21 Aug 08 at 14:27. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Should be relatively easy to accomplish, and is currently pretty unnecessarily limited.

In power management, the default P.M. tool in hardy allows you to set a monitor sleep time and a "Put computer to sleep when inactive for:" slider... ...that only goes up to 1 hour! After that, your only choice is "Never" It's just silly to not allow more flexability there.

I've been having problems when I tried to use the sleep functionality, so I wouldn't want an hour away to put my computer into sleep mode, but after a day, or 12 hours, or something long like that, I'd prefer my computer went into sleep mode than that it stayed on.

Increase the range of options to cover one full day, so that it can be useful without ever interrupting a user's workflow, (e.g. if you go to lunch and stay out over an hour, but don't want to have to deal with reviving from sleep).

File Size in Add/Remove Application and Synaptic
Written by velja27 the 11 Aug 08 at 22:05. Category: Installation. Related to: Add/Remove program dialog. New
When i open Add/Remove or Synaptic i cant see how big the file for download
is or how much it will take of my hard disks space after installation. It would be
very nice to see those information before starting to download/install some application cause there are people with slow internet(56/128 etc,i have 512 but thats not blazing fast either) and theres download limit(which is evil by it
self) and other obstacles that may prevent u from getting desired application.
I dont know if Adept has that or not so it would be good to add it to Adept as well if Adept doesnt have it,or any other package manager in *ubuntus.
(And for the record i searched for idea similar to this,i couldnt find it,if there is one please link to it in comments or to merge votes or whatever(yea i have tons of votes so it would be very important to merge them :) [joke])
*btw this is my first idea so if i did something wrong please tell me,i am always welcome for tips :D

Push Dell to use coreboot instead of proprietary BIOS
Written by Laconic the 11 Aug 08 at 23:14. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Dell seems to be ignoring this in Ideastorm.
http://www.ideastorm.com/article/show/62549/coreboot_formerly_LinuxBIOS_instead _of_proprietary_BIOS

Maybe Canonical could bring it up at their next meeting or something.

Benefits:
# 100% Free Software (GPL), no royalties, no license fees!
# Fast boot times (3 seconds from power-on to Linux console)
# Runs in 32-Bit protected mode almost from the start

Coreboot link:

screenshots, reviews and other info in synaptic
Written by trylik the 8 Aug 08 at 09:42. Category: System. Related to: Synaptic package manager. New
when i was looking for sound converter, i found about 6 positions in synaptic

it would be great if i could turn on "moore info" and inside this window i will se some screenshots, reviews, maybe some videos etc

there is a great functionality in some package manager - user rating, more info about packages would be very good especially for new users

from the other side, every user should be able to write review,, add screenshotss etc very easily

this could be made with special option in menu - review this software (just like translate this program, report bug etc) - this would show a dialog with fields to fill - this way, community could rate each software very precisely

this data should be also available from web

imagine this:

user has just removed windows, and now he is looking for svg editor

he just opens package manager - chooses category "graphics" -> "svg editor" and he is able to browse through the catalog, watch some screenshots and videos, and finally choose which software is the best for him

there is ksnapshot, krecordmydesktop and other usefull apps for implemeting this

Make sure Dell provides unbiased information about linux.
Written by sparky11 the 8 Aug 08 at 19:24. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
With dell's new netbook due to come out soon, it is extremely important for the growth of linux that they provide honest information about it. They shouldn't say something like:
"The linux option is cheaper than the xp option. However, it can not run most commercial programs" After reading that, why would anybody choose it? It should say something along the lines of:
"Linux is an open source alternative to Windows. This means it is completely free for anybody to use it in any way. It can do almost anything that you can do with windows. It cannot run windows software, but there are many free alternatives that do the same thing included with it. It comes with a word processor (That can handle .doc), a web browser, an email application, and many other utilities. It is also very easy to install new software, without the risk of viruses. In fact, there are virtually no viruses that can harm linux..."

This explanation is fairly unbiased, and all true, and provides a much more pleasing alternative. However, dell will not do write such a description because of the pressure of microsoft. We need to push dell to write the truth if linux is ever going to be common among everyday users.

Diagram of installed packages and dependencies
Written by Auzy the 5 Aug 08 at 00:50. Category: System. Related to: Synaptic package manager. New
I'd like Synaptic to be able to show me a diagram of all installed packages and their dependencies. This would give me a better idea of what branches of the synaptic package tree I can prune/uninstall, without problems to packages later in the chain.

Full-time developers
Written by Eldmannen the 11 Jun 08 at 16:43. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Canonical should hire at least one full-time developer for X.org and GNOME.

X Server 1.4.1 was delayed by 212 days. X is used by pretty much every distribution, and not only Linux also other operating systems, so it is a very important package. We need the bugs fixed, such as EDID. We need new features such as input hotness, XKB 2, Xi 2 and MPX, etc.

Zenwalk Linux have a Xorg developer, we should have at least one too.

GNOME is also one of the most important packages in Ubuntu, and we should have a developer for it too, so we can make Ubuntu more powerful, functional and friendly.
