Apple's PowerPoint Application (Keynote) Slide Transitions & Animation

Apple's PowerPoint Presentation application, Keynote, is amazing & even better than PowerPoint, in some ways, notably, the slide transition effects & animations.
Most people do NOT know that PowerPoint supposedly was originally created for Macs, not PCs. The original company got bought out by guess who? Microsoft, of course.
Apple has since then created their own "PowerPoint" application called Keynote. Its a part of the iWork 08 application suite. I
Just watch any keynote presentation (on Apple.com or YouTube) given by Steve Jobs, i.e. the recent 3G iphone keynote announcement & introduction.
All linux users, not just Ubuntu users, need to have a PowerPoint or Keynote-like application that is equally professional & awesome in slide transitions & animations equal to the Desktop Effects found in Compiz-Fusion. Maybe it should be some how incorporated in w/the Compiz-Fusion Technology.
OpenOffice.Org 3.0's application, Impress or Presentation, will definitely be an improvement over the current version. However, it looks like it will not have the ability to perform the same very slick & amazing slide transitions & animations especially those available in Apple's Keynote. There is still room for improvement.

Gimp should support history undo feature and configure it too

Although gimp supports little bit of undo history feature but it needs to be more mature and configurable to user desired level.allow
1)setting undo history to a number of rollbacks like 50 undo,200 undo or even more.
2)Gimp should also allow optimizing gimp to system hardware,
considering system resources.like gimp>>preferences>>use 500mb out of total 1gb ram space[like a slider to increase and decrease the system resources it uses, this is especially good for optimized usage on slow and fast systems]
Use 64mb out of 256 video memory

Bring some Translucency effects into Gnome.we can see nice translucency effect on button,Three actions while using buttons like Task bar Application button:
Normal without any effect and when pressed and when mouse over.add Glossy Panel, even translucency into Task bar, more translucent icons.Make Translucent Application Button in Task bar,it is barely visible and not good looking with present Ubuntu icon,Make it Bigger,Brighter,Translucent.i think some themes like clear looks tried a hand at making buttons Translucent.

Make Ubuntu more polished visually

An OS, no matter how technologically or ideologically advanced it is, should also be visually appealing.
And Ubuntu, being one of the most beatiful (I mean the default appearance here) distribution of Linux still can't compete with Vista (not to mention Mac OS X).
Here I imly the following:
-icons. All the icons should be converted into vector graphics, so that they were scalable (so that they could look the same everywhere).
-fonts. Even Liberation fonts look better than default GNOME's dejavu, but still they leave much to be desired.
-screensaver. Currently, it's just a black screen. Enough said, I guess. Ubuntu should offer aset of nice screensavers, basic, or OpenGL-driven.
-applets. GNOME applets should grow in numbers and functionality. At least I would suggest a wrapper that could display a Web widget as an applet, so that user could simply paste BB-codes from YouTube, Jaiku, Vimeo or else and see it on his desktop.
-3D effects. There shouldn't be a vast number of them, but all of them should be quality-driven. Just look how bad is Compiz rendering as you make anything that drives windows borders into curves - they are edgy and twisted.
-wallpapers. I know, Deviantart contest is on, but here is also another point: Ubuntu should provide numerous wallpapers out-of-box, and all of them should suit the default colour scheme. The same stays for login screen.
-themes. Ubuntu should provide themes that change the appearance more globally. Not only GNOME's appearance, but all the apps, bootloader, login screen, screensaver.
-customization. Changing Ubuntu's appearance isn't really easy these days, since you can't tune up all the aspects in one place. I mean, you can change the theme, but you should work really hard to make your style as sole as the defaut one - Qt, GTK and other (wxWindows, etc) applications share different configs. Just try to switch to a darker theme and you'll learn how many elements would require tuning. Ubuntu can offer great means of customization, but that doesn' mean that an average user is able to make a cool-looking style.
-bootloader. That was already mentioned, but still. Ubuntu should show text mode at all. Currently, it can occasionally fall back to console for a while, which is discomforting.
-hibernation/suspend screen. The same.

Add Gnuzilla IceCat in Ubuntu 8.10's "Free Software Only" Mode

First of let me start by saying that I think pressing F6 twice on boot to get a free Ubuntu is better than having a whole other distribution called Gobuntu however, Gobuntu should follow the same goal and it probably already is but read on to get my true point. Gobuntu 7.10 had an issue with Firefox's proprietary artwork (logo, name). (Read on for my point/opinion.)
IceCat is a very picky version of Firefox but it is essentially a more free as in freedom version of Firefox in which the browser as a whole is free to be changed as opposed to the majority of the browser in the standard Firefox.
Windows converts and others who just like Firefox should still be able to get it by loading Ubuntu as they normally would but for the extra picky users (The "Free Software Only" Mode is made for picky users in the first place), when they choose to load a fully free Ubuntu system, have IceCat be in that mode.
It shouldn't be hard to implement with concern to space consumption either since they are technically the same package with SLIGHT differences, so it shouldn't take much more space at all!
If Firefox is going to be the browser as it was for 8.04 in the "Free Software Only" mode, then there really is no point for a Free-Software mode (apart from open source video drivers, etc).
If not IceCat then epiphany or at least some fully free web browser. However, I do think it would be better to have IceCat since it is technically a fully free FIREFOX and that's what Ubuntu users would prefer to have.
In addition to it being "free-er", IceCat points solely to free plugins such as gnash instead of pointing to Adobe as would the original Firefox.
Voters, remember...you are voting for it to be in the "Free Software" Mode only so if you want Firefox and you load Ubuntu in the normal way, this won't affect you so, please vote ;).

With all the artists Ubuntu has, and Grub not going anywhere soon, could grub at least get a splash screen by default? It's much more appealing than the simple menu that exists now.

Make OpenOffice Sexy, port RedOffice

A fantastic front-end to OpenOffice has been developed. Currently it is only available for Windows, but will be ported to Linux shortly.
As this new front-end will be available under the GPL we should use it in Ubuntu (or see if upstream would be willing to include it).
OpenOffice is often accused of looking archaic, not only that but we need to catch up with the interface of Microsoft Office 2007. Something you might not notice at first glance are the new templates, they're far nicer than the ones OpenOffice ships with (shouldn't be difficult to remove the Chinese symbols if required).

more appealing startup and shutdown splashscreens

The Ubuntu startup and shutdown splashscreens with the Ubuntu logo and a progress bar underneath it really looks like something from the 90ies (Windows 95 anyone?)
I don't know if there are any hindrances to using images or animations of higher resolutions than what is currently used (for machines that supports it), but I really think Ubuntu can do better here.
This may be an unimportant improvement compared to many other ideas here, but it should be a very quick and easy fix, and it will really help when you try to convince regular folks to make the switch (a graphically stunning desktop is _so_ important when you show it to occasional users!).

In order to promote Ubuntu we could work with our allies at Google to start a Google Adwords campaign.
Since Ubuntu and Google have a history of working together, Google might be willing to give us an discount off an adwords campaign.

synaptic has very frustrating interface next it doesn't
mark dependencies by its own,
More silent installation of packages.
Packages ordering should be refined like themes, system applications and utilities, network related,fun/games etc
old libraries and external/third party libraries
too many dialogs makes things worst.
much better dialogs.i mean i don't want to see library files
all library needed should be installed minimal fuss with
libraries.
i don't want to understand jargon what library does what function,in turn its useless even if i understand.
better versioning and info.
better add/remove dialogs.by size,usage etc

Partner with FSF

Ubuntu is a free software operating system that consists entirely of free software.
Ubuntu comes with many GNU software by the Free Software Foundation (FSF).
The FSF created the GNU project, the FSF created the GPL license. Richard Stallman started the whole free software movement by founding the FSF.
FSF promotes free software that can be used, studied, and modified without restriction, and which can be copied and redistributed in modified or unmodified form either without restriction, or with minimal restrictions only to ensure that further recipients can also do these things.
I propose we partner with the FSF.

Different approach to GUI's

Why don't we do something different for a GUI?
Rather than use "panels" and "icons" why don't we use screenlets/desklets/widgets for everything? I have almost completely remade my desktop with them, showing everything from the main menu to a quick open of firefox, and all of the normal clocks, sensors, and weather advisers. It is do-able now, with current screenlet technology, and with compiz, the effects take on a new level of functionality by being able to be called to the surface with a key press, easily move-able, and they even wobble. (I use the menu key because it would not let me use the Super key.)
It would set Ubuntu apart from the crowd by being the first to configure their system exclusively with what is fast becoming the next step in GUI functionality.
It could even lend itself to using a "lighter" GUI, like FVWM-Crystal or Fluxbox, rather than Gnome, without sacrificing looks, functionality, or customization.

Gnome-panel drops behind other desktops in the look and feel of the panel.
There are loads of Ideas e.g. on gnome-look.org about improving the panel and especially the menu. It looks like a lot of people don't like the situation right now.
It would be nice to have some discussion, how gnome-panel could be improved.
Please notice, this is not about changing the panel into a dock, but about extending its funktionallity and look and feel while keeping what we already have, and works well.

Promote the "Linux" trademark.

The Asus Eee PC runs Xandros. Dell run Ubuntu. The Nokia N810 tablet also run Linux.
What do they have in common? They do not promote the "Linux" trademark. Users never see (as far as I know) the word "Linux" on these systems.
When booting a system with "Ubuntu", the user sees only the "Ubuntu" logo. Nothing suggest that it is a flavor of Linux.
We should help users make the connection between all these systems. Users that purchase the Eee PC should know that they are running Linux. While Xandros and Asus are out of Canonical's control, I believe that Ubuntu should also make its part to promote the "Linux" trademark. I suggest that the splash screen should contain the Logo "Ubuntu" with the words "A Linux Distribution" in much smaller characters, on the lower right corner, just under the name "Ubuntu".
If we can start the initiative to promote the trademark "Linux", public awareness about the OS will increase. By preaching by example, Ubuntu can help the cause and encourage other vendors and distributions to do the same.
Everybody know about Mac and Windows. Many users run Linux in embedded systems, cellphones and soon Asus Motherboards. Yet they will never know it is Linux they are running...
If users are aware that their cellphones are running Linux and we suggest to install Ubuntu on their laptop, they might say "Linux, like on my cellphone?" and make a connection. It will feel more familiar for them and they will associate the name with, hopefully, quality.

Goal: De-geek compiling source-code.
Some users are savvy enough to navigate to a 'Download' section of a website for software XYZ but are unsure of what to do next after downloading source-code.
Manually compiling source-code should be a choice, not a requirement. :)
Scenario:
I choose "Open" versus "Save" to Download source-code from a website and Ubuntu automatically compiles and executes the source-code. ("it just works")
* Perhaps some sort of "Install and Run" option via Right-Click Menu for previously downloaded source-code.
That would rock, basically.

Canonical should hire a legion of tens of thousands of Chinese programmers.
It will be very cheap, and Chinese people are very intelligent and hard workers. Always top A grade students, perfect score on all tests.
In China people work 20 hours a day for only like $2 dollar a day.
We can employ them for only 6-9 hours a day with a great salary of $5-10 dollar per day.
It will be a great deal for them, because they can work less and earn more.
It will be great for us, because we can hire tens of thousand Chinese programmers, a whole legion of them and increase the development rate by a factor of a thousand.
