Configure Gnome with only one panel by default
Written by mikaelstaldal the 9 Oct 08 at 13:08. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Gnome. New
Gnome should be configured with only one panel by default. Having two panels wastes too much vertical space on the display.

Especially considering that widescreen displays becomes more and more popular.

don't active wobbly plugin by default
Written by yzarc the 12 Oct 08 at 20:07. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Compiz. New
I think wobbly is a plugin that can disturb who doesn't like it. it's too noticeable to be activated by default. tired eyes can get "injured" by the changes of resolution and distortion that take place and we are moving a window.
I agree that it's an applet that calls attention from potentially linux users, but it's unlike fades that make the use of the computer more smooth, it distracts you when you just want to move windows making you lose your focus.

Hide non-gui apps in Synaptic by default
Written by nandersson the 11 Oct 08 at 06:13. Category: Usability. Related to: Synaptic package manager. New
This idea targets Synaptic. My suggestion is that Synaptic by default should filter out applications that doesn't have a GUI or end up in the menus.

Why? It's in line with Ubuntus "for human beeings" and I guess the rest of us uses the command prompt (i.e apt-get) anyway.

I also know the package maintainers already adds a URL to the package if it exist - another great thing would be to actually add a kind of thumb nail image for the application. There are tons of great apps out there - we just don't know about them.

Synaptic + the repository is a killer application in itself - lets make it even sharper.

Market Ubuntu to Cuba
Written by Eldmannen the 28 Apr 08 at 22:22. Category: Marketing. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
USA have trade sanctions (Trade Sanctions Reform and Enhancement Act) which forbids the trade with Cuba.

Cuba does not like USA, so its probably not very found of Microsoft either. And with the trade sanctions I guess it can be difficult to get Windows to Cuba.

Market Ubuntu to Cuba. They loose dependency on USA, and Ubuntu's userbase grow. It's a win/win situation.

Proprietary software for their IT industry from a foreign nation which they have bad relations with could be bad for their national security.

Cuba is communistic. They like to share, and so do we.

Ubuntu should have a program to execute .exes by default
Written by GreatLeader the 10 Oct 08 at 02:03. Category: Usability. Related to: Nothing/Others. Not an idea
I mean, come on people! The only reason Ubuntu lags behind Mac and Windows is because Macs and Windows can execute .exes! Linux couldn't use .exes, but Linux was used in 1980, when .exes weren't so common. I know Ubuntu is based on Linux, but it should have a way to execute .exes (and not emulating them like wine, witch by the way seriously sucks). Lets face it: .exe files are the most common way programmers use to create files. That is the only way Ubuntu can compete against Windows and Mac!

Developer comments
.exes are generally Windows executables, and Macs cannot run them natively either. We have Wine for that.

Desktop "Bins"
Written by sparky11 the 8 Oct 08 at 20:52. Category: Usability. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
This is basically just an original way of implementing Mac OSX's stacks feature. By default, there could be 3 translucent tabs on the side of the desktop, one for the home folder, one for the downloads folder, and one that is a temporary folder for copy/paste. These tabs would be very interactive. If you click on them, they would slide open, and show a grid of items in the folder. The user could also drag files onto these tabs to move files to the folder. If hovered upon, the icon on the tab would change from the icon it had before, to the icon of the most recently added file. The name of this file would appear beneath it. The user could then drag the file back out of it to wherever he/she wishes.

Therefore, they would serve as both a "stacks" folder, and a copy/paste dropbox.

NOTE:This should have an option to be disabled, if a user had no need for it.

*If you vote down, please explain!*

Implement quality safeguards.
Written by animaniac the 7 Oct 08 at 21:15. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Im guessing that since Ibex is in beta the background wont be changed, and from what i've seen so far the response has been nothing but negative towards it.

There should be a way for the community to force last minute changes in case something like this were to happen again, where a easily fixable decision went horribly wrong and received tons of bad press....

eg:

http://www.linuxloop.com/news/2008/10/01/sometimes-things-just-dont-work-annouc ing-ubuntus-new-theme-pile-of-crap/

http://opensource.idg.se/2.1014/1.184032/communityn-ubuntus-nya-bakgrundsbild-s uger

http://www.nabble.com/Intrepid-Ibex-Theme-td18931241.html

Im using the artwork as an example, but this should apply to any easily fixable problem, another example could be choice of a certain package over another that would cause an outrage in the community.

Have Adobe Flash Player pre-installed with Ubuntu
Written by jengajam2 the 8 Oct 08 at 02:28. Category: Usability. Related to: Firefox. New
Now see the reason I moved from Ubuntu to Linux Mint (based off Ubuntu) was because so many things were already installed that weren't on Ubuntu, while having a small file size.

Off that point, one of the things that nags me the most when installing Ubuntu is that there is no flash player pre-installed on the OS, and is one of the main things that makes Ubuntu "not out of the box".

So my suggestion is that when you open Firefox for the first time, it should already be able to use flash; preferably version 9 and up.

Ubuntu Office
Written by thomashome the 7 Oct 08 at 21:05. Category: Office. Related to: OpenOffice.org Word Processor. New
Ubuntu should have it's own office apps instead of openoffice.org! why?

Because first of all Ubuntu needs something better than ooo,
secondly ooo is not like MS Word it is not WYSIWYG! Also people will be flocking to ubuntu more than people will be flocking to the Flock Browser!

Boost Brainstorm - add field for "affects package"
Written by nandersson the 6 Oct 08 at 11:26. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. Already implemented
When you submit a bug report you have the possibility to tell what package you think is the cause of the bug.

I would like to see this feature in Brainstorm - I would like to be able to tell what package I think could make great use of this idea.

It would also be a sure way to get the upstream developers attention - not only the Ubuntu packagers.

The upstream developers could then check for feature requests and "great" ideas (i.e most voted) that the community suggests regarding their software.

Merge this with the new "Upstream Bug Report" and we'll boost creativity - for sure.

Canonical/Ubuntu has 100+ employees. This idea targets how to get outside those 100+ and reach the 2200 of Red Hat, 4100 of Novell and those several thousands of Linux devs at IBM, HP and Sun.

For example: If I have an idea regarding Firefox I consider a "Developer comment" valid only if the comment comes from one of the developers of that software - not the guy that packages it.

Ref: Ubuntu Upstream Bug Report https://edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+upstreamreport

Developer comments
Reverting other comments, as the offensiveness of the original post has been removed.

Marking as already implemented. Brainstorm already supports this.

Allow Brainstorm ideas to be anonymous
Written by Auzy the 6 Oct 08 at 07:05. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Quoting a Brainstorm developer, "Developer #1 I quite like being anonymous...". Well, so do I. I'd like an option to submit ideas without my name linked to the public on them (only to developers or admins). This would make idea submission a lot more fair, so votes for an idea would no longer be dependent on how your last ideas performed.

I have seen a few cases in the past of ideas that were voted down because of the submitter posting them, hence why the ability to make ourselves anonymous, would be more fair. It would pose no security risk, and nor would it make it easier to post spam (as admins could still see the real users name). It would simply mean that people who believe they are being discriminated against, don't need to create a second username to determine if they really are. They can just post anonymously instead.

Not hard to code either. Just add an extra column in the table, and check if its been set. If it has, display the name as anonymous, not "tinky winky" or whoever.

Developer comments
Anonymous Developer #N: I think it's quite a good idea.

bash /shell expressions via a gui
Written by publicunimail the 6 Oct 08 at 17:47. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
bash /shell expressions via a gui simply make small expressions presented via a gui of some sorts. Like --> "find" (this dir "." and -name Thumbs.db) buttons associated with a show me / simulate -exec rm \; .... should be fairly simple to do. Just have put safeguards in place to stop users killing their files ;)

Replace Robots Game with Frozen-Bubble
Written by Rich the 6 Oct 08 at 19:36. Category: Gaming. Related to: Frozen-Bubble. New
This is some of the result of my findings on converting my housemates to Ubuntu:

"This Robots game really sucks!"
"Yeah.. it does. Here, try Frozen-Bubble."
"This is like crack!"

In short, Robots isn't fun and looks like it was made by a high schooler and Frozen-Bubble is addicting and looks professional.

It's amazing how much time people spend on the default games that come with a computer, so please replace the lame no-fun stinker with the best F/OSS puzzle game out there.

Thoughts?

Make 'Ubuntu Code of Conduct' less tech savvy
Written by eyalev the 9 Apr 08 at 13:47. Category: Education. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
The 'Ubuntu Code of Conduct' has too much programmers slang. It should be addressed also to 'Humans' who don't know what is 'frozen system' or 'upstream community'.

A MORE "OPEN GLASSY " Desktop Environment
Written by leonel95 the 5 Oct 08 at 21:46. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I would love to see a more "open" desktop, I was thinking a feeling that the desktop is more alive as you interact with it. From time to time i get a closed feeling when im using the desktop. its just too plain. for example the panels it would be cool to see a more glassy appearance, but to be out of the way at the same time. Its like having a panel thats there in a semi see thru form that wont stand out while you are working on things; and as soon as you are ready to use it place the mouse in that area and make the transparency go away, This gives a more liberal feeling, openness ;0)
what Ubuntu needs is real CANDY to the user without exaggerating. Use the graphics card more often we finally have the compositing support now. This in turn makes the ubuntu community grow even more. Now a days its more about eye candy as compared to usability. look at the MACoSx. If ubuntu concentrated on creating a mixed 50/50 of both eyecandy/usabililty there would be alot more interest.
they need to manage the use of those short 6 months for better developement of what was initialy promised/mentioned.

As far as we've seen what is the "New' look that we are supposed to be receiving with INTREPID IBEX.I mean honestly what is the change?

Use mailings to promote Intrepid Ibex (Marketing)
Written by litamus the 5 Oct 08 at 20:46. Category: Marketing. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Ok, millions around the world know about Ubuntu, many of them tried our favorite OS, but relatively little of them know about next Ubuntu releases and it's newest features..

The idea is to send a special newsletter (promoting Intrepid Ibex) to registered Ubuntu users. Some may like to send it to there friends.. and so on..

This newsletter should be clear, attractive, and targeting both notorious Ubuntu users and people who had never heard about Linux!
