Hi, i'm from Russia... Sorry for my English )))
Related to ALL UBUNTU DISTRS.
I wery often use my notebook in different places. And there are minimum 4 menu must be reconfigured for work with internet (general proxy service, proxy of web brouser (Firefox), proxy for Synaptic, general TCP/IP configuration).
It's will be great if all settings possible to change in one application, for example some "Network Center". I think it posible make this app and make for this app can configure network parametres some popular and often-use programms, and seve current profile for each place where you can connect to network.
I use Ubuntu Studio 8.04 — Hardy Heron with Gnome desctop on my laptop Acer Aspire 4310! It's best LINUX OS that I have see.
Thanx a lot!

Vlc as default for video instead of totem

Totem is a good player, but vlc is much better. Please put the best software as default in ubuntu, because the problems of new users , coming from windows, will decrease a lot with vlc, that recognise more codecs than totem.

The search feature that allows you to find a certain file doesn't have the ability to search all hard drives on the system...ONLY ONE HARD DRIVE (OR PARTITION) CAN BE SEARCHED AT A TIME!! Although minor, this should be fixed.

Improve Recycle bin & Delete files

Hi! I'm using Ubuntu 8.04, and I dislike the "recycle bin", and the way to delete files with delete/supr button.
Like said dr88dr88 in:
http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/60/
"We need the possibility to restore deleted files with a right mouse click in the trash bin in Gnome."
But too, a restore option in menu "file".
And one more thing, very important, a menu "tools" to configure the recycle bin. With:
* When select delete o push delete/supr button:
- Ask to send file/s & folder/s to the recycle bin.
- No ask nothing, and send directly file/s & folder/s to the recycle bin.
And the same with shift+delete/supr.
why? because is possible that persons like me, push accidentally delete/supr button, and you know, that in Ubuntu when you have got selected files or folders, if you push it, are deleted immediately without asking nothing.
New adds 13/7/8:
Included: Files with more of 15* days in recycle bin, will be deleted.
*You can change 5-10-15-20-30 days.
In Ubuntu, you don't know the time that the files can be in the recycle bin, ok, if you search in Internet YES, but we want to aproximate Ubuntu to every people, and is good, that the people have near the information.

File Search (Places) - cannot cut and paste

Imagine you have many files in different folders. You can search for this files using the graphical search tool under "Places". And if you find them all you cannot move them!
You can only move them to trash and then move them where you want to. In my opinion a graphical search tool must have this features.

Improve the "Save as..." and "Open file" Nautilus mini-browser

When you want to open a file, or save a file from an application, you have to use this mini file browser. It is tiny, not easily usable, and particularly frustrating when searching for an image, since you can't have a thumbnail of them.
It should be bigger by default, and it should be possible to choose the view of the file (list, details or thumbnails).

synaptic - add an option to show only applications, without libraries

when browsing the repositories using synaptic, the libraries, doxumentations, localization packages, etc. are adding a lot of visual clutter, and makes browsing the catalog much more difficult.
please add an option to hide libraries/ localizations, etc. and show only applications.
add/remove programs does not have all the application in the repositories listed, therefore it is not a solution.

Better PROXY handling for APT and WGET

I use Ubuntu at work, and here we have a powerfull proxy.
Would be nice to have a unique place to configure the proxy settings, a single place, only one.
You configure and it just works, for APT, WGET, SYNAPTIC, FIREFOX, etc.

Define network-proxy settings in one place

Right now (7.10), several applications have their own individual proxy setting. Ubuntu has a 'network proxy' configuration option, but it only sets the http_proxy variable if you define a static proxy (it won't be set if a .pac script is configured). If the variable is set, it's only available in the bash-shell, not to programs i started on my desktop (firefox, konqueror). As well, synaptic should re-use this setting.
I think it would be great if i would just define my proxy in one place, and all programs would re-use this setting by default (it is ok to override this, if a user wants to do this for a specific application).
Profile switching based on network-location would make this feature even better, but i saw that somebody else has posted that idea already.

Touchpad and mouse with individual sensitivity settings

Multiple pointer devices, e.g. one touchpad and one mouse, might require different sensitivity settings.
If mice report their model to the computer (they do, right?), reasonable default settings could be kept in a database and mabye adjusted according to how the user has adjusted the settings of other devices. Any changes the user makes should of course be remembered until next time the same mouse gets plugged in.
With or without a database, a window could pop up the first time a particular model is plugged in, allowing the user to adjust the settings.
(I'm not sure if I'm posting in the right category.)

Remember the name of hard drives in /media/

When you use multiple USB hard drives you might know the problem: you unplugged one of them and rebooted. Now some drives, even non-USB drives, have changed their names e.g. from "disk-2" to "disk-1". Sounds like no biggie, but suddenly some programs don't find their files anymore and all folder settings and thumbnails are gone.
Idea: Have Ubuntu remember the drives by their unique ID or something and issue the same name whenever it's plugged in.
Greetings
wiberg
