add a "view in english" button to all error messages
Written by briceparent the 30 May 08 at 09:00. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Hello!
When you use Ubuntu in any other language than English, when an error message is shown, of course, it's shown in your own language.
...But, as the best way to solve the problem, is googling it, and as most of the documentation there is in english, it would be a good thing to have a button (or a right-click entry) on that kind of message to print (or copy to the clipboard) the exact syntax of the original message. When we try to translate it ourselves, we can't really now how it was written in the original message thought there are different translations for a single message that could be used.
This would also be great to help us submit bugs.

[EDIT] : As some of you said, showing standard error numbers would help us finding response, and wouldn't force the users to install English languages packs)
[/EDIT]

Thanks

Brice

beep me when asking a question
Written by briceparent the 5 Apr 08 at 12:18. Category: Installation. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
During installation, Ubuntu has some questions to ask.
In order to let the user do something else during the working time of the installer, it would be great for it to beep the user to tell him that a question is asked, the installation is finished successfully, or if an error occured. This way, the "doing-something-else-user" would know that the computer is waiting for him.
It would not necessary be the default behaviour, because i'm pretty sure that many users really don't like the system's beep, but just having a checkbox at the beginning of the installation asking something like "Do you want to be beeped when a question is asked to you during the installation?" would really be usefull and i'm quiet sure it wouldn't be really hard to add.
Having that option, we wouldn't have to stay in front of the computer, looking at the growing percentage...
(I apologize for my English which may be a little poor, and i wish i've been well understood...)

Add a "Update from backports" checkbox in synaptics
Written by briceparent the 2 Oct 08 at 09:10. Category: System. Related to: Synaptic package manager. New
When backports are enabled, the update manager wants (or propose) to update all the packages using the backports' source list, which is not what I want. I just want to enable one package's backport, to minimize the risks.
To do that, when backports are activated, we could have a checkbox added to each element of synaptic's list, which when ckecked would enable backport for that package (and necessary dependencies, if any).
From command line, it could just be a --enable-backport option for the apt-get install..
If i'm having problems with my up-to-date package, i would just have to uncheck the "enable backport" (or from command line something like remove + reinstall with --disable-backport, which would be the default behaviour), to restaure my package to the official way.

I wish my poor English has been well understood...

Show Application icon when there is only one app running on a desktop
Written by briceparent the 11 Apr 08 at 09:59. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
For example, if we have an open thunderbird on a desktop, and if it's running fullscreen, on the dashboard we can see the thunderbird's icon showing which is the desktop used for that.
What would be great would be the same thing for desktops where only one application is running.
If i minimize my thunderbird, i won't be abble to know which is the desktop i use for it.
