A default system of widgets for ubuntu
Written by alpikat the 6 Jul 08 at 15:07. Category: Graphics. Related to: GDesklets. New
Put a system of widgets like the gadgets of Windows Vista or Mac OS X widgets, installed as standard on the operating system ready for use when the installation finishes.
The program could be based on the source of gdesklets.
If implemented the idea would be good to be compatible with the widgets of google and gdesklets; and also would have their own native widgets for the program.

Thank you for ubuntu !

While requesting features to the open source community which consist mainly of free workers, we may often forget to say how much we like Ubuntu and look like costumers requesting.

So you can say thank you to the thousands of developers and users who gave their time by voting for this article :)

Portable Synaptic Extension
Written by Rasengan the 3 Aug 08 at 05:41. Category: System. Related to: Synaptic package manager. New
The first time i downloaded Hardy Heron, it was using a torrent client in an internet cafe. I then copied the iso on to my usb drive, came home, burned and installed.

At which point i was dead in the water. I had no net connection at the time and therefore could not access the wealth of the repositories.

my idea is a portable extension of synaptic. Installable on any usb drive or external drive:
I install Ubuntu but i have no net access. I plug in my usb drive and open synaptic which now has a feature to Install an executable version of synaptic on my usb drive with my relevant system information.
I then take my usb key to any net cafe plug in my drive, Launch portable Synaptic, connect to the repositories and download and cache my desired programs on my usb drive.

I then take my drive back home, plug it in and open synaptic which then can sync with my usb drive and install my programs.

With a tool like this users can maintain an up-to-date system even where an internet connection is not readily available or affordable. It would also be infinitely more flexible than an entire repository on dvd, although i find that these are also great ideas.

Off-line installation of softwares from one machine to other without internet co
Written by nikhilsinha the 13 Mar 08 at 16:23. Category: Installation. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
It is very easy to install softwares from internet but it is a problem to install softwares on a machine which does not have internet connection even tough you have all packages available off-line.

There are available ways to copy packages using "APTonCD". But still the machine without internet connection asks to reload repositories.
Even we can double click and install the required software, but when they have dependencies.... it is a tough job!

It would be great if we can move one or group of softwares with all dependencies and repository to another machine with a single click.

Due to this the users who install Ubuntu but don't have internet connection, think the Ubuntu is not for them and at last they abandon Ubuntu!

Automatically delete Windows settings files on non-fat/ntfs partitions.
Written by ezekiel_000 the 2 Aug 08 at 21:47. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Ubuntu Linux should automatically delete Windows settings files (e.g. desktop.ini, Thumbs.db etc) on non-windows partitions (e.g. ReiserFS, Ext2, Ext3 etc). I'm not sure where this would be implemented (Nautilus?, File-Roller?). As none of these files are needed in Linux and I find that I'm forever searching for and removing these files when I download and unzip/unrar files created on Windows computers. This also wouldn't affect wine emulation as these files are only used for windows explorer, if for example you downloaded a game or program as a zip file.

On the fly-switching between gnash and macromedia flash
Written by moderatelymodest the 18 Apr 08 at 12:50. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
A way to switch easily between gnash and macromedia flash in Firefox would be great. In this way you could use the gnash plugin until you hit some flash that doesn't work and only then resort to using the proprietary plugin. This should boost gnash usage and hopefully promote development as well.

Maybe this could be implemented as a Fx addon or something, I'm not too well versed with the technical details.

Make Ubuntu look better
Written by voncarlsson the 30 Jul 08 at 18:36. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Ubuntu is not (imo) the best looking OS out there, not even close to. I have som ideas to make Ubuntu look great.

Ideas:

* SVG icons.
* A theme that apply to EVERY application.
* More then just human theme.
* Better menus. Like the KDE4 or OpenSUSE menu.
* More then just a brown wallpaper included.
* Fresh up the look of synaptic, make it look like "Install or Uninstall programs", maybe a Apple influenced theme.
* Just one activity bar, like in Windows.
* Not just a blank activity bar, make it look more like Windows or at least make it look better.
* Stop making the screen flicker when starting up, like in Fedora ( think it was called X11 fst or something like that)
* Nicer icon theme, like Crashbit on gnome-look.

Well that just a few of my thoughts about how to make Ubuntu look better.

Partenrship with Yahoo...?
Written by bogdan_5844 the 29 Mar 08 at 12:55. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I don't know if this is possible/worth it,but at least here in Romania,Yahoo Messenger is being used by absolutely everyone. It's a big pain in the *** to use Pidgin.Sure,it can send (and recieve!)files now,but webcam, photo share and other features are missing.GYachI looks promising, but it's interface scares the user out.

Can't Canonical make a partnership with Yahoo to at least get part of the code,in order to make a compatible Yahoo messenger client for Linux/Unix?

I don't really care if the final product(if it will exist) will be GPL'ed or not,I just want to use it(as I use Skype, but unfortunately that's not so popular, only 3 contacts in my list)

Sorry for my preety crappy english

Right click menu for program in panel window list should contain force kill
Written by Auzy the 8 Aug 08 at 01:19. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
When you right click a program in the panels window list (where all your programs running are listed), the menu should also contain an option to force kill the program (but throw a warning before it is done). This would make it a lot easier to kill a program which is doing something dodgy, instead of being forced to bring up a specialist task killing program or terminal.

Why not an image repository for specific hardware configurations ?   forum
Written by JackD the 26 Jul 08 at 23:34. Category: Installation. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Why don't we have an image repository for specific hardware systems ?

Background: This summer, I've been doing some system installations for a variety of friends and family. When my 80 year old father was visiting, he decided to purchase a Lenovo 3000 N200 and let me wipe Vista, then install Ubuntu. He's really impressed with the system.
It took me a weekend to get the the sound, network and video configured correctly. Then I used clonezilla to back it up, just in case there is a problem (/home is a separate partition, so I can re-install the image without deleting his data).

PITCH:So, now I have this 2 + G image of Ubuntu 8.04 that is suitable for any Lenovo 3000 N200. Wouldn't it be cool to have a repository of basic images for specific hardware systems? Wouldn't it be so much easier to be able to download the image and install a pre-configured Ubuntu ? I have questions about who would host the images, how would they be vetted to be clean from any maliciousness, etc.
Hardware vendors would probably be neutral: increased sales versus unsupported software.

Still, the idea just seems so promising that I'm hopeful it could work.

Move active file to trash
Written by janberk the 30 Jul 08 at 14:47. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Create a command to delete the current file run by active application and associate it globally to a shortcut.

Suppose that the command to display the path of the file currently run by active window is %activepathname, so a global shortcut running command "rm %activepathname" would simply do the job.

Instead, a global script appended to the right-click context menu might also work. When the window header is right clicked, options like "Move to Trash", "Move to Desktop" etc. might activate the relevant script. (Moreover, this commands can be appended to theme managers as buttons, like "minimize window", "close window".)

But either way a distinction is compulsory, regarding for which applications should these commands can be used. For example it's OK for Evince to have these commands when the window header is right-clicked, but for Firefox or Pidgin, this is completely unnecessary.

Also there should be another distinction, as not to remove the binary file of the application that is running the file but the file itself.

Have a panel background by default
Written by sparky11 the 23 Jul 08 at 20:00. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Gnome. New
The current default install has just plain white panels. These panels are no match for what other modern operating have as their background. It is very easy to implement, and would make a much better impression on many potential users.

I understand this is similar to:
http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/10935/

but that proposes more radical and harder to implement ideas. I think that idea 10935 should be a longterm goal, but for the short term (8.10), ubuntu should just get a nice panel background, such as:
http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Another+Menu-Bar?content=74177

Why can't I scrool on flashes in firefox?
Written by bogdan_5844 the 18 Mar 08 at 21:39. Category: Accessibility. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I know this may be a firefox related question, but oh well...

In winblows, when I scrooled the wheel with my mouse being on a flash(like the flash videos on youtube) it will continue scrooling. In ubuntu if I scrool with the cursor on the flash,it does nothing.

Try it for yourself. You shall see.

I think this is totally stupid and should be solved

Display volume labels in the Ubuntu installer
Written by Eldmannen the 24 May 08 at 17:27. Category: Installation. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Many new users are confused by device names such as /dev/sda1, /dev/sdb5, /dev/hda2, /dev/hdc4, etc.

So I propose to show volume labels (partition names) in the installer, to make it easier for users who install Ubuntu to know which partition they are installing on.

Screenshots:
* Before
* After

This will make it clearer and easier to install Ubuntu without any mistakes being done which might result in that a new user accidentally looses valuable data.

Lively Ubuntu homepage
Written by Jeisson the 18 Apr 08 at 17:43. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I like to visit the Ubuntu.com homepage frequently, in order to know the number of days to next release, to get some news about the project, to learn more about the system, but it seems a photograph.

I imagine there are lots of resources on Internet with that information, but they are not linked from Ubuntu homepage. For example, Ubuntu Brainstorm is a great idea, but it is not linked neither!

I think, homepage should be a lively commonplace to Ubuntu users and potential new users. It should have:

* News about the operating system and the project, new features just implemented, programmers required for..., etc., etc.
* A complex search engine for documentation only related to Ubuntu. It could search into the docs (help.ubuntu.com), forums, wikis, tutorials...
* Link to related and useful projects: Brainstorm, cdimage, Ubuntu Rescue Remix, getdeb.net, Forums... It could resemble labs.google.com
* Resources: backgrounds, screen-savers, useful programs, hotows...

I think, people could give more recommendations. Ubuntu is a great project and the web face of it should reflect that ;)
