Create mini test programs (and publish them) for complex tasks
Written by bobhenz the 29 Feb 08 at 17:55. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I think it would be helpful from a support standpoint if (when reporting a bug) the user could type some command-line commands which would test individual components of a complex task.

For example to test hibernate you could do something like...
# powermgr_hibernate task=validate_hardware
# powermgr_hibernate task=try_sleep
# powermgr_hibernate task=verify_wakeup

The validate_hardware might do something magical to indicate if the hardware was hooked up correctly (i.e. CAN the motherboard even sleep?)

try_sleep might attempt to sleep the cpu then after 5 seconds it would auto wakeup (can the CPU sleep, can the HDD sleep, can it wake back up)

verify_wakeup might sleep the computer and then wait for you to shake the mouse, or press a key to prove that it can read input when it is sleeping.

Each of these tasks are allowed to hang. This is for debug and the fact that try_sleep hangs could provide very interesting information.

Each of these tasks would also create log files as it goes through each step so that you can see that try_sleep was able to sleep and wake up the CPU, but not able to wake up the harddrive. etc.

This list of "mini test programs" could then be published on the ubuntu website. So that if you were having a problem with hibernate or suspend functionality, us users could give you developers more useful information than "it hangs and requires a power cycle"

Better wi-fi support
Written by neilneil2000 the 29 Feb 08 at 00:20. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
More support for more wireless chipsets out of the box and "Windows style" ease of set up.

I have spent may a day trying to configure wireless cards on Ubuntu, often without much luck!

Please also deliver more support for what they are both wireless PCI cards and USB, as it is currently very low base of drivers for such devices

Push for partnerships with other hardware vendors
Written by Veejay the 28 Feb 08 at 14:41. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. In development
Given the success (as far as I know) of your Dell partnership, please do everything possible to seek alliances with other vendors, as it will reinforce the idea that Ubuntu is a viable alternative to other operating systems and will provide better hardware support for current Ubuntu users.

Dell is offering new models based on Ubuntu (recently the XPS M1330 in a few countries), proof that the business model makes sense.

We have an active partnership program and are open to discussions with hardware vendors. See: http://www.ubuntu.com/partners/hardwareprogramme
