Allow users to attach "bounties" to Ubuntu Brainstorm ideas

It would be great if users could attach money to Brainstorm ideas. Its all good and well to post hundreds of ideas, but as things go, ideas which are posted first may not be the best ideas, but will climb to the top fastest (and will stay there, because people will vote for them on most popular).
Lets make it possible for people to donate $5 or so to their own ideas. Sure nobody may implement it, or the patch may not be accepted but it opens things up a lot more. Nobody loses either.
For those who think that this will turn linux coders into people who only code for money are wrong. There have been many bounties in the past, and they have not wiped out the many developers (me inclusive) who code as a hobby. Even with the gnome bounties in place, I still continued coding my application at the time for instance.
Anyway, at the end of the day, its not hard to implement, and it will do nothing but speed up development for highly wanted features (and maybe even organisations like gnome could use the money on spreading word about linux, or improving their hardware support).

An application able to detect bad configuration and
able to suggest new parameters.
Few months ago, after an update, my swap partition was not mounted anymore. My PC was badly slow, but i didn't guess immediatly what was going wrong.
It's better now but i still believe it s not quick enough. I am sure there are still bad things to optimize on my configuration.
Sorry for my pathetic english.

Small businesses need double-entry native Linux (Ubuntu) bookkeeping applications such as QuickBooks from the Windows realm. Hopefully Canonical is partnering with startups to get this done. (At present the personal finance app's I've found just aren't strong enough or focused enough on business.)

Ubuntu Home Server for Home Users and Small Businesses Alike

What I would like to see from Canonical is an Ubuntu Home Server similar to that of Microsoft's Home Server solution with ease of setup and use as well as the ability to back up workstations on a small network like WHS (Windows Home Server) does. But without the 10 client limitation that WHS server currently has, as well as the ability to easily securely and remotely connect for multimedia content use while working from a remote location. It should be streamlined and easy to setup, maintain and implement both on the server and client(s) side of Ubuntu.
Thank you.
Developer comments
Creating such a product requires work on both the server and the desktop experience of Ubuntu. The final product integrates different components that are currently worked on, such as simple remote server administration, easy backup solution for desktops.
Most of the basic buildings blocks are already available (such as samba/nfs for file sharing and network authentication, avahi for service discovery). Once the others one are built, integration work can begin.
Defining which services or features should be provided and use cases would help.

The idea is very simple. A small message saying that the usb drive is ready to extract after you unmount the unit to extract it. It is only to be sure about the device is ready to be extracted.
Thanks.

In the early days of FPS games every beginner learned the secrets of the dropdown console because it was quick and easy to reach for and more powerful than the options dialogs. It also felt not like any random dialog box but like the intended direct wire to talk to the program core.
My suggestion would be to integrate an up-to-date (compiz ready) version of Tilda in Ubuntu as a default way to reach for a terminal. Putting it on a keyboard shortcut like F12 and making it 100% width and something like 35-40% height dropping down from the top with a black on white (maybe a little transparent) background makes it feel like it is one with the upper panel bar and not like some random empty window opening on a menu click on terminal.
Maybe this way we might get a better acceptance of the cli with new users. We wouldn't have to explain what a terminal is, what its advantages and how to get to it, we could tell people to just press "F12", copy-paste "this and that", confirm with "Enter" and press "F12" again. Easy to follow, easy to accept, easy to live by.

Brainstorm: Should be possible to link ideas to Ubuntu packages

Sometimes people suggest stuff that's already there.
It would be handy to be able link those ideas to the relevant Ubuntu packages.
Right now it's possible to link ideas to ubuntuforums threads, blueprints, and bug reports, but not to packages.

We need to beef up the community aspect in Ubuntu. Instead of people searching for the community to follow online, we need to build the community inside the OS. Make it easier for people not to feel pressured into loading up an IRC client to ask some simple questions or going to a forum to get feedback. Don't get me wrong, these are great ways to find help online, but we need to make it more approachable.
First off, we need to have a name to associate each other with. Our handle should be glorified in the Ubuntu community. I am going to make the biggest comparisons with Microsoft's Xbox gamertags. With an Xbox gamertag, you get to see the level of commitment (silver or gold), name, reputation, zone, or last 5 games played. Having this embedded with your handle would encourage people to advocate their commitment to Ubuntu.
We could make these new "Ubuntags" available online so that people can show them on their websites, their OSs, and forums. It would be a great way to find out information about our friends if they use Ubuntu. So here is what we would show:
1. For the commitment, we can show which version they are running: Ubuntu, Kubuntu, etc. That would be put where the gold/silver account information color would go.
2. The gamertag would be the name that you register online and your new Ubuntu username would associate you with the internet, this would obviously be your handle.
3. Reputation would be determined through how your friends rate you. Whether you fix bugs within Ubuntu, answer questions on IRC/forums, or just help the install base, this would be reflected in how your friends or others rate yourself.
4. The gamerscore can go either way. I was thinking either total time on Ubuntu would be rewarded either in point value or actual time. Or, for developers, they can have how many bugs they have fixed within their code. I think this would be determined in what zone or area of expertise they choose.

Change volume control panel applet to show a vertical volume indicator
|
|
Written by oencke the 29 Feb 08 at 14:27. Category: Look and Feel.
Related to: Gnome.
New

The gnome volume control panel applet indication of the current volume is not easily recognizeable since there are only three soundwaves. To get an exact reading we need to hover on the icon with the mouse. I think the implementation of the XFCE volume control and likewise the gnome cpu load indicator are much more informative with their use of an easily identifiable vertical indicator.
My suggestion would be to exchange the soundwaves with a vertical bar/slider that might even be colorcoded. If consent is not reached over which look would better suit new users an option to switch between these possibilities might be adviseable.

It would be great if
#1 there were a tool on my Ubuntu desktop that enable me to collect all hardware information from my machine at once and then submit it to launchpad.
#2 there was a way to reference this hardware profile when reporting bugs.
It would make the lives of bug reporters easier as:
#1 Even unskilled people could collect the info.
#2 The info would only need to be collected once. So bug reporters would not have to repeat the same steps over and over again for each HW bug they report.
It would also make the lives of bug fixers easier as:
#1 Launchpad could enable them to query each bug report for affected hardware.
#2 There would be more such information available because it is not such a pain in the ass of the bug reporters anymore.
The Process in more detail:
-----------------------------------
Step #1: Add a GUI driven software to the Ubuntu distro which enables
users to submit their hardware information to a central database.
Step #2: Allow the users to attach the DB IDs to their launchpad
profile (multiple if needed).
Step #3: Allow the user to select which of his machines are affected.
Step #4: Allow the bug fixers to retrieve a list of affected hardware
for a bug from launchpad. Like: give me all USB chipsets of machine IDs
attached to this bug.
How the feature could be used:

Allow relations between ideas and rank those Idea Clouds

Allow users to establish relationships between ideas.
Some features lay grounds for others. And the one idea might not work with the other implemented first.
It should be possible to set these relations and to view them. This enables users to easily find related ideas and vote for them too and helps developers, sponsors and blueprinters to see the big picture.
Possibly the resulting IdeaClouds could also get some weight. Ideas which when implemented would enable a lot of other ideas should have a higher ranking than stand-alone ideas.
Take something like gstreamer for example pulseaudio or telepathy. Lots of applications can be based on these frameworks. Therefore these ideas should be more important even if not so many people might understand how cool they actually are. So will understand and make the connections resulting in a higher ranking for these not so popular and understandable "neardy" ideas.
