The brainstorm site needs to have a new item in the user menu: Ideas I've commented on. For many comments, people are looking for responses, or are curious to know what other people are saying. You could also provide the ability to "watch" topics, and be notified when they are updated and/or comments are made.

Brainstorm: "Most popular this month" should show ideas from week 2,3,4 first
Written by mp3phish the 13 Apr 08 at 01:59. Category: Brainstorm. Implemented
When you click on the link "Most popular this month" it only has about 2 or 3 ideas on the first page that are not already on the front page of "Most popular this week". What this basically means is that this link is broken. There are two options to fix this problem:

1) Only show ideas greater than 1 week old
-or-
2) Give priority to the week 2, 3, and 4 ideas (ie: give week 1 ideas a 7-14 day sorting penalty).

Once this sorting issue is fixed, brainstorm will work much better. I filed a bug report on it, but it got no response and I think it is slipping through the cracks.

What do you think? Are there any other ways you can see to solve this problem?

Developer comments
A much better algorithm, based on the 2nd proposition, was uploaded.
The "Most popular this month" list is now much more realistic!

Add power management options to System->Admin->Login Window
Written by JorgeBurgos the 15 Mar 08 at 22:45. Category: Others. New
Especially in an office environment, a lot of computer idle time is actually spent at the login screen. There doesn't appear to be any way to manage power at the login screen - e.g. turn monitors off, hard drivers down etc.

Brain Strorm: select how ideas are shown

I think it was useful if there was an option that one could choose how ideas are shown, for example titel only, detailed, etc

Ability to keep original aspect ratio on MPlayer
Written by sf_007 the 7 Apr 08 at 16:26. Category: Multimedia. New
MPlayer is probably one of the best media players on Linux... but it does not keep the original aspect ratio of videos!

Sure we can select "Aspect ratio -> Original", but as soon as we resize the window, the video is distorted!
I mean, why can't we at least have an option to always keep the original aspect ratio of the videos?!?

All other players I tried in ubuntu even do it by default:
-GNOME MPlayer
-Kaffeine
-KMPlayer
-KPlayer
-Totem
-SMPlayer
-VLC

Provide search input on every brainstorm page
Written by DavidONE the 9 Mar 08 at 21:56. Category: Brainstorm. New
Currently idea pages do not have a search input field which means I regularly need to click back to home in order to search.

That's a waste of a click and my time.

Put the search box on *every* brainstorm page (there's plenty of white space up there :)).

Cursor should become invisible when one starts typing
Written by vikasbn the 29 Feb 08 at 07:49. Category: Look and Feel. New
I think this is a very useful usability improvement. When I highlight a particular field and start typing in it, I don't want the mouse cursor blocking my view. It would be really nifty if the cursor just became invisible for the period of time that the keyboard is being used.

PulseAudio: Remember settings for programs
Written by sf_007 the 9 Apr 08 at 23:37. Category: Multimedia. New
If some crazy flash ads in Firefox start playing sound I mute those crazy bastards in PulseAudio, (I do not mute all the sound, so I can still listen to music). But once firefox is closed, those settings disappear!!! meaning: once I re-open firefox, flash has sound again!!!

I hate when those bastards just scare the hell out of me when I'm listening to music or something.... so I would like to have flash ALWAYS muted, something PulseAudio does not allow!
Why can't PulseAudio just remember these settings for each program?!?! Seems easy to implement...
It would be sooo nice...

PS: This is only possible in PulseAudio with the GUI installed: padevchooser

Canonical should become a Supporting Member of the KDE
Written by Eldmannen the 30 Mar 08 at 01:18. Category: Others. New
Canonical uses KDE for Kubuntu.
They are already a member of GNOME Foundation.

So they should become a member of the KDE Foundation too.

Force Feedback Support
Written by MerlinofChaos the 7 Mar 08 at 21:13. Category: Gaming. New
Well for all of those gamers who love the console feel and have a gamepad that supports force feedback. Of course for force feedback we also need games that support it, so that's of course the first priority, then force feedback, but force feedback would be nice nonetheless.

Allow linking of Brainstorm ideas to other launchpad projects
Written by jander99 the 29 Feb 08 at 05:36. Category: System. New
Some of the ideas on Brainstorm are not relevant to Ubuntu, but rather to other projects Ubuntu integrates into its distribution. Provide a way to modify brainstorm ideas to link with other projects available on Launchpad, and syndicate that information to the launchpad project.

Tor: anonymity online. - Optional default "non-exit" node service.
Written by danieljuh the 19 Apr 08 at 15:42. Category: Internet & Networking. New
https://www.torproject.org/

I would like to propose the idea of having a Tor-relay as an option in Ubuntu, with the default setting of "non-exit" operation if the user have a internet connection of 20 kilobytes/s or more.

About "non-exit" node: It basically means that the service the user is running, passes along the traffic to another tor node.
It doesnt use the users internet connection to access the "web/email/etc".
Read more here:
https://wiki.torproject.org/noreply/TheOnionRouter/TorFAQ#RunARelayBut

Ofcourse there are security concerns but there are "remedies":
https://wiki.torproject.org/noreply/TheOnionRouter/OperationalSecurity
https://wiki.torproject.org/noreply/TheOnionRouter/TorInChroot

Everyone who are concerned over ABUSE or LEGAL matters, can read these:
Abuse: http://www.torproject.org/faq-abuse.html.en
Legal: http://www.torproject.org/eff/tor-legal-faq.html.en

The Tor blog is quite interesting:
https://blog.torproject.org/
And ofcourse their wiki is quite informative:
https://wiki.torproject.org/noreply/TheOnionRouter

(It should be noted that this is one of those ideas you get when you cant sleep and think, that would be amazing for freedom of the net/speech, please disregard this or get inspiration however you feel about it. I search a bit, but didnt find any ideas about tor so.. and btw sorry for my bad english)

Open flash files in default browser
Written by bescritt the 19 Apr 08 at 20:23. Category: Multimedia. New
Set the default program for opening a flash file to 'sensible-browser'.

On most people's systems this would let one double-click on a flash file, and it would open in Firefox - which presumably is set up with the right codecs.

I propose to creation of a theme for Wine that emulates the Human GTK look of Ubuntu.

This would make running Windows applications under Wine feel more integrated as they would look, feel and behave more like other applications in Ubuntu.

I don't necessarily propose this to be by default, but to be an option available in "Wine configuration" -> "Desktop integration" -> "Theme".

Mozilla-firefox-adblock should be replaced by Adblock Plus in Ubuntu's repos.

Mozilla-firefox-adblock (https://addons.mozilla.org/pl/firefox/addon/1865) should be replaced by Adblock Plus (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1865)in Ubuntu's repositories because the Adblock isn't developed anymore (since 2004).

Treat archives like regular folders
Written by JJRabbit the 3 Mar 08 at 15:33. Category: System. New
Archives are opening in applications like File Roller. Why? When you thing about you realize that archive is nothing less than special type of folder (and folder is special type of file with defined structure dependent on filesystem). But archives can be presented as compressed folders and opens in same windows as regular folders. Why do we need to confuse user with different windows?

Working with archives will be easy as in Midnight Commander or in Total Commander or in Windows XP. And if it will be implemented like VFS (zip://path/archive.zip/subdirectory/file) or as kernel driver it will be easier due to be transparent to any application.

Update: If gvfs is not possible, mounting the archive could be another possible way to implement this.

Archive managers should be used only for creating archives with non common attributes, e.g. encrypted, splitted to multiple volumes (to fit DVD, CD, ZIP drive, Floppy)...

Note: When you try to drag big file out from the archive from File Roller you need to wait to fully uncompress file before releasing mouse button (once it started to uncompress it). It's bad and very annoying.

Allow Editing Gnome Menu Items from Inside the Menu
Written by rouge568 the 29 Feb 08 at 00:39. Category: System. New
As of now, if one wants to add/edit a menu item, one has to right-click on the gnome menu title bar, select to edit the menu, and then navigate through another hierarchy. It would be much simpler to add an option to "edit this item" or "add a new menu item" through right-click when you are navigating the menu normally.

Hello,

by default, when we install a soft with the terminal, this is not show in history of Synaptic, but i think go to the log for check history is not user-friendly...

So i propose to integrate in synaptic all history of apt-get / aptitude in synaptic.

bye
