Allow SAMBA to mount NTFS partition files more easily through FSTAB
Written by XerxesXS the 16 Mar 08 at 17:17. Category: Internet & Networking. New
When I came to mounting directories from an XP computer (although any windows this should be applicable) using SAMBA server at startup (similar to "map network drive" in windows) I found that this is relatively cryptic to do, with no warnings or messages to state that the mounting had failed.

Upon googling, I found that this is as for SAMBA to be able to mount using the SMB FS, the mounts need to be added to FSTAB with a lot of UID codes.

ie:

//Server/MountName /MountPoint smbfs credentials=/home/Username/.smbcredentials,uid=Username,gid=users 0 0

For the average user, this seems to be a little haphazard and many will not want to edit FSTAB nor know how to do this

Additionally, the user seems to need to be in the sudoers file.

I propose some sort of SAMBA addon GUI that will allow for automatic updating of FSTAB to this purpose; Perhaps a Nautilus shell script with something similar to the "Map Network Drive..." option in windows, when navigating the Network with Nautilus.

Simple checkbox-style GUI for customizing nautilus-actions
Written by johan the 4 Mar 08 at 23:27. Category: Accessibility. New
This is an idea for a compromise that might make all those people happy that want some extra functionality added to nautilus right-click actions.

How about a simple GUI where you can check the boxes of the actions you want to access using the right mousebutton, and also sort out the order of the list to your liking.

Ship Mono.19 with Ubuntu 8.04
Written by georgwaechter the 30 Mar 08 at 13:34. Category: Programming. New
Ubuntu 8.04 will ship with the old Mono version 1.2.6. But there is already the new stable version 1.9. So why include an old one?

Apt-cacher needs to delete corrupted files
Written by fishy5 the 31 Mar 08 at 18:19. Category: Server. Not an idea
I love apt-cacher since it saves me and Ubuntu multiple gigs of bandwidth a month but recently I came across a problem with it. It's not a bug cause apt-cacher is working fine but it would be nice to include this feature. I had some updates that weren't installing because of a hash mismatch so I let a week go by and it of course wasn't fixing itself because the bad file was on my server not the mirror. I had to manually login to the server and delete those packages from the apt-cacher folder. This happened with about 14 packages within 2 weeks for some reason. If Apt-cacher could automatically purge those after a client fails to successfully update that would be convenient.

Written by markschu the 13 Mar 08 at 10:29. Category: Accessibility. New
Scale in compiz is a very nice way of switching between windows. But it won't show minimized windows and this should be an option.

Use Ubuntu Mobile for HTPC projects
Written by StefanHamminga the 19 Apr 08 at 09:23. Category: Multimedia. New
In my view both project user interfaces have similar goals: provide a beautiful looking, fast, easy navigable interface to a subset of media / communications related fullscreen applications. The other demands (fast starting / suspend-resume, lightweight, etc) are pretty much the same as well.

Common apps:
- Media Player (audio, movies, etc... Both being played on Mobile and HTPC devices)
- TV player (DVB-T for mobile, other standards for TV?)
- Phone client (SIP for both, GSM/CDMA/UMTS/etc for phone)
- Mail client (same on both)
- News reader
- Web browser

Since the Ubuntu Mobile project is currently ahead in development pace and gaining support fast it would make sense to use that platform. The HTPC projects can then just concentrate on getting their apps integrated in Mobile, instead of building both the GUI and the apps. Ubuntu mobile would benefit from the larger amount of well integrated multimedia applications and HTPC would benefit from a fast, lightweight and uptodate platform.

Remove memtest+ from Grub
Written by Virtual_Spirit the 19 Apr 08 at 12:38. Category: System. New
How often you use memtest+ ? nor more than one or two time in whole year. So why not remove the link in grub and make a link in the system menu like "Check my memory at next boot "

With that the boot menu will be more clear.

I thinks 90% of non-geek user never use this tool.

Single Computer Manager
Written by chig00 the 19 Apr 08 at 19:27. Category: System. New
The idea is to have single computer manager similar to current system monitor, but with more accent on controlling and wider coverage of functions.
It should consist of two parts. First one is Process Manager where you can see parameters of each process and control them. This include
* Execution management: adjusting niceness of process, probably also include control of how much of processor time task can use, how many and which cores of processor it can use.
* Memory management which allow to see how much and which memory does task use, and set limit on maximum usage, when task exceeds maximum amount kernel could either shutdown task or map all exceeding memory to swap, or just ask user on what to do.
* Sound management where user can control sound parameters such as hardware used to output sound, volume level and equalizer effects.
* Network management using which user can specify which connection to use and how much of bandwidth to allocate for task.
* Hard drive IO priority
* Screen management where program can be specified to use some specific geometry/color space to use.
* Input blocking from some input devices (keyboard mouse joystick wheel)

Second part is Hardware Manager where user can see system health status, modify parameters such as fan speeds, mounting/unmounting drives, devices, manually put some hardware in sleep mode, control processor speed, CD-ROM speed etc.

My view is that this should be implemented first in linux kernel for example using /proc file system, and then just have some controlling software with GUI.

Open PDF, PS Documents within Firefox using Evince   forum
Written by _alex_ the 19 Apr 08 at 18:36. Category: Accessibility. New
Clicking on a link to a PDF or PS file should open the document within Firefox. Or at least there should be a dialog when such a link is first clicked that lets the user decide whether they want the document opened in a stand-alone evince window or inside Firefox.

There's already a way to do this with Evince, but it is not intuitive to set up. Many users are also unaware of this and install Adobe's rather slow reader just to get PDFs to open inside the browser.

Lively Ubuntu homepage
Written by Jeisson the 18 Apr 08 at 17:43. Category: Internet & Networking. New
I like to visit the Ubuntu.com homepage frequently, in order to know the number of days to next release, to get some news about the project, to learn more about the system, but it seems a photograph.

I imagine there are lots of resources on Internet with that information, but they are not linked from Ubuntu homepage. For example, Ubuntu Brainstorm is a great idea, but it is not linked neither!

I think, homepage should be a lively commonplace to Ubuntu users and potential new users. It should have:

* News about the operating system and the project, new features just implemented, programmers required for..., etc., etc.
* A complex search engine for documentation only related to Ubuntu. It could search into the docs (help.ubuntu.com), forums, wikis, tutorials...
* Link to related and useful projects: Brainstorm, cdimage, Ubuntu Rescue Remix, getdeb.net, Forums... It could resemble labs.google.com
* Resources: backgrounds, screen-savers, useful programs, hotows...

I think, people could give more recommendations. Ubuntu is a great project and the web face of it should reflect that ;)

New Ubuntu System notifications (Sounds)
Written by retj the 18 Apr 08 at 22:30. Category: Look and Feel. New
I think its time to use new sound notifications on ubuntu, somehow like Boeralis (ubuntustudio notifications), or something that makes ubuntu a little more professional.
Here's a link to the files of startup/end sound alternative thanks to the contribution of Madsrh:
http://www.ubuntu-art.org/content/show.php/Ubuntu+startup%2Bend+sounds?content= 75236
I personally like them because they are more professional but still keeps african feeling...

Brainstorm; Groups Management
Written by cg.bolanos the 19 Apr 08 at 18:47. Category: Brainstorm. New
As to able to manage the group of individuals that see to the development of an idea, from posting it on brainstorm to its final implementation. This would provide the ability of functional groups to continue to work on other ideas, despite of the platform they use to develop it, such as Launchpad, Google Code or Sourceforge.

The main aspects that should be covered are:
• Groups,
• And allowing the groups to travel from one idea to another.
