It is likely that the situation will occur that you vote an idea up or down, only to then take part in the discussion and change your mind about it. After all, there is bound to be someone with more expertise with a different view on the subject that you hadn't considered. Currently, you cannot see, remove or reverse your vote. I think you should be able to, on the basis that it would give a more accurate and up-to-date representation of user opinion.

The counter-argument to this would be that it could cause an element of uncertainty, but I do not feel that avoiding this should come at the expense of being able to change your mind.

show negative and positive votes of the ideas - not only the sum. Show also the absolute sum of votes - how many vote against or for an idea.

Compete with directx
Written by kd7tck@msn.com the 29 Feb 08 at 01:04. Category: Gaming. New
Ubuntu should develop it's own open source game development libraries. This could push for a unified way to develop games on Linux platforms. Fast ANSI C libs that don't act as an engine, but rather as a easy way to gain access to the systems hardware from languages like python,c++,java... Why should Windows attract all the game developers. If a standardized library is developed for Linux it would certainly make anyone Question the need to use Directx.

Ubuntu Brainstorm should make it possible to vote for idea deletion
Written by Eproxus the 28 Feb 08 at 16:29. Category: Brainstorm. New
The reason for this is to unclutter Ubuntu Brainstorm.

Some ideas submitted are not applicable, or are already existing although the poster didn't know about them.

It should be possible mark an idea for deletion instead of just voting it down, but it should be well distinguished from voting down an idea. Perhaps users must click on the idea to be able to mark it for deletion.

Copying Images in Firefox
Written by tromboneman the 16 Mar 08 at 13:14. Category: Internet & Networking. New
In Firefox, it isn't possible to copy images. In the Windows version, you can right click on an image, select copy, and then paste it into your OpenOffice document. On Ubuntu, you have to save the image somewhere, and then import it into your OpenOffice document. I'm not sure if this is just Ubuntu, or the whole GNU/Linux version of Firefox. I do know, though, that it is possible in Konqueror!

PulseAudio: Remember settings for programs
Written by sf_007 the 9 Apr 08 at 23:37. Category: Multimedia. New
If some crazy flash ads in Firefox start playing sound I mute those crazy bastards in PulseAudio, (I do not mute all the sound, so I can still listen to music). But once firefox is closed, those settings disappear!!! meaning: once I re-open firefox, flash has sound again!!!

I hate when those bastards just scare the hell out of me when I'm listening to music or something.... so I would like to have flash ALWAYS muted, something PulseAudio does not allow!
Why can't PulseAudio just remember these settings for each program?!?! Seems easy to implement...
It would be sooo nice...

PS: This is only possible in PulseAudio with the GUI installed: padevchooser

Shadow behind the desktop icons
Written by dega1999 the 11 Mar 08 at 19:41. Category: Accessibility. New
It should be good if it can be possible to have some shadow behind the desktop icon with a choosable color and choosable alpha channel.
The reason for this feature is to have better visibility with some wallpaper that have region that seems to hide icons.
With this feature the icons should always be in good contrast and fast reachable.

I tried to make an example but I'm not good with graphics program so if someone could make an example , it will be nice.

Add a repository (& optional package) with one click
Written by ski309 the 18 Apr 08 at 17:19. Category: Installation. New
For the most part Ubuntu's package installations work great, especially when non-geek types want to install a certain program. It's easier and more intuitive than performing a Windows installation by far. However, these advantages cease when a specific package wanted by the user is not in the repository. At this point, the user needs to do several things:

1) Go to the program's website
2) Find the program's repository commands
3) Either run the commands via the terminal or add them to a dialog box that's several layers beneath the surface of the GUI (System -> Admin -> Software Source -> Third Party Software)

Step #1 is inescapable, but the other steps could be easily simplified to the point where non-geek types could add a repository to their system without breaking a sweat.

I propose the following:
A file that, when opened in Ubuntu, automates the addition of repositories. I imagine this as a simple text file with the repository commands inside. The file would have a .rep extension.

Optionally, the .rep file could also include the names of packages from the new repository to install.

As an example, here's what the .rep file would like for Inkscape:

--------------------
:gutsy_repositories
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/inkscape.testers/ubuntu gutsy main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/inkscape.testers/ubuntu gutsy main

:gutsy_packages
inkscape-0.46-0

Work for interoperability with existing educational software
Written by Kent88 the 3 Mar 08 at 00:22. Category: Education. New
I am a university student, and I run a dual-boot machine solely because some university software will only run on windows or mac (mostly just windows). I'm not just talking about an office suite, there are other things, like lab paper submission software, special software used in engineering, math, and other classes.

Find out from universities what type of software their students need for classes. Work with these companies for real native Linux versions. I don't care if I pay a license fee for it, I just want to be able to do my homework without booting to windows.

Make the computer give me answers
Written by Eldmannen the 26 Mar 08 at 20:20. Category: Others. New
Make a new application or improve Beagle, Tracker or Deskbar.

It do acronym lookups, math calculation, fact lookup, data generation, unit conversion, etc.

So that when I ask it something, it answers me.
RAM? = Random access memory
91*74-26 = 6708
Capital of Sweden? = Stockholm
22 inch in centimeter = 55.88 centimeter
chemical formula for water? = H2O
#0000ff = shows the color blue
01101000 01100101 01101100 01101100 01101111 = hello
68 65 6C 6C 6F = hello
Hello in Italian? = ciao
Time in Tokyo? = 19:46
Weather in Paris? = 7°C, sunny.
rot13 hello = uryyb

So right from the Deskbar (or something) on the desktop, I can ask something, and it will answer me.

Customized "ubuntu" logos for different locales   forum
Written by Ayar the 7 Mar 08 at 08:04. Category: Education. New
Unlike "MS Windows", which is proprietary, no-one forces us to use latin characters for "ubuntu", all the more this word is not latin by itself. Teach your children their native language first. Respect those who does not understand latin characters.

Work with Humanized to bring Enso to GNU/Linux faster   forum
Written by bescritt the 29 Feb 08 at 18:48. Category: Look and Feel. New
"Having to change programs to perform simple tasks—for example, making a quick calculation, or looking up a definition—breaks your concentration, takes you away from the task at hand, and wastes your valuable time. Enso lets you do common computing tasks easier and faster than ever before. You get a huge productivity boost and a simpler digital life."
http://www.humanized.com/
On my accounts at school, and on my music server I rely on Enso to help me do things quickly. Also, a mouseless machine is much easier to use with Enso's help.

Adopt a standard set of icons for all desktop versions that is user friendly.
Written by hgibson the 17 Mar 08 at 19:35. Category: Look and Feel. New
See: http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php/CrashBit?content=71140

An average user should be able to determine what an icon's function is simply by looking at it.

The icon design should try to ensure language independence and where possible use international iconography symbols.

The icon naming project is a step in the right direction.

Standard icons would help greatly with usability.

For examples, see:
http://www.encyclopedia.com/doc/1E1-iconogra.html
http://www.4yeo.com/pagelements/icons/signs/index.htm
http://www.aiga.org/content.cfm/symbol-signs

We should get serious about a standard international lexicon for computer/network iconography. I do not believe this has been done before. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Nautilus Bookmarks sidepane should have "bubble" effect during drag-n-drop.
Written by Cybercod the 14 Mar 08 at 07:13. Category: Look and Feel. New
When I'm cleaning up a folder I tend to use the Bookmarks sidepane to help my cleanup go faster. I take files and drag them to the bookmark folder where they should go. But it is really very sensitive, and it is just as easy to create a NEW bookmark as it is to move the file.

I suggest that the sidepanel "bubbles" or magnifies the Bookmarks closest around the cursor so it is easier to be sure you are putting something where it goes.

This idea is small and petty and will probably die a horrible death. But I though it might be a nice touch, and I haven't made very many Look & Feel suggestions.
