Complete FreeNX Support and Integration
[needs-packaging] FreeNX (#183801)

bug
Written by batonac the 31 Mar 08 at 22:52. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
FreeNX is an extremely fast and powerful screen sharing server which far surpasses any similar technology Ubuntu currently has available.

FreeNX allows for super fast remote sessions, even over dial-up connections. FreeNX has tightly-integrated printer, file, and audio sharing. FreeNX is so light on bandwidth that it would allow for fast LTSP clients even over wireless bridges.

NX was designed with remote users in mind. It's not a technology developed for occasional remote computer desktop access. It built for everyday use.

Ubuntu should completely support and integrate this technology by the following:
1. Include it in the software repositories. (ensure that it works with all Ubuntu variations and all NX clients)
2. Set FreeNX as the default remote desktop server. (develop ability to connect to existing sessions first)
3. Integrate NX connection abilities into whatever remote desktop client is set by default.
4. Replace XDMCP with FreeNX server/client in LTSP. (see http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/5848/)
5? Creating an "access my pc from anywhere in the world" service using FreeNX.

Keywords: Dynamic remote desktop feature, SSH, X11, VNC, Free NX, XEPHYR

Ask Authors To Approve Duplicate Ideas!
Written by batonac the 31 Mar 08 at 12:52. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
It seems that any new idea which is reported as a duplicate can be quickly removed and merged into another, even if the original author thought that his idea was similar, but had very important differences from the older idea.

I very recently reported a new and exciting idea for ubuntu which was becoming popular very fast (for its short lifetime). My idea has been removed from brainstorm searches because someone reported it as a duplicate of a lesser idea, and, although the other idea had a similar theme, my idea was far more specific and better documented.

I wish that members here still had the option of voting for my idea, since voting for other idea won't accomplish what I was proposing, but I seem to have no power over this process.

To get a feel for the problem, look here:

My Original idea:
http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/5848/

Other Idea:
http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/5362/

If the author doesn't respond in the time appointed, then the merge should go ahead, but otherwise, our free speech should be better protected on this site.

LiveUSB
Written by Taku the 28 Feb 08 at 14:35. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. Implemented
cdroms are slow, don't allow to modify their content easily, they are weak and not as easy to carry as USB keys.

It would be great to provide Ubuntu as a liveUSB just as Mandriva does. We should be able to carry our distribution on any computer, manage our preferred settings (do I want binary drivers enabled ? what is my preferred resolution ?), etc.

The thing is not to make something transportable, but really a nomad system that could be used just the best way as it could on any computer.

Developer comments
This was implemented by two separate projects! Both Usb-creator (see the blueprint) and Usblive (see its website) allow you to build a live USB system on Intrepid.
The first one is available on the repository, and usblive in this PPA.

Hi!

I'm a big fan of Images like .iso.
But it is not very easy to mount this Images.
I think there must be a Tool in Nautilus and Dolphin wich alows mounting Images with a double Click. (This feature exists int MacOS). Or with a right click on the file and then there must be a poit "Mount Image". I thick that would be a very use full Tool for every one.
A good example for this is CDemu.

I know there are some ohter good programs, but I think that would be the easyest way and very confortible.

There is a wide community of online artists capable of creating brilliant, unique artwork.

heading: Get your artwork on 10 million desktops

Ubuntu, the world's most popular Linux distribution, needs a new theme. The winner will appear in the default desktop of Ubuntu 8.10.

We're looking for original wallpapers, that match Ubuntu's color palette. You entry should also include a suggested combination of application, icon, and window themes. These can be existing themes, or your own original works - you only need to submit a wallpaper to win.

Work must be CC licensed, and be openable in either Inkscape or Gimp (rest of criteria continues)

Submit your works to DeviantArt and include the words [Ubuntu810].

Good luck!

Developer comments
At this point in time it is unclear as to whether we can realize something like this. In any case we cannot promise to include anything as default without having already seen it. This might be a good way to find alternative wallpapers to also include on the CD and/or universe as an extra package.

Create nice-looking Folder Icons or improve Hardy emblems
Written by ubunteando the 26 Mar 08 at 20:07. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I miss to have a "basic" collection of nice looking folder icons to use in my Home folder: Downloads, Music, Images, Movies...

Ubuntu has emblems, which are not so bad, but in Hardy the emblems look all alike... Its an orange circle with the image in white... Which makes it impossible to differentiate one from another... Either go back to colorful emblems like gutsy or implement folder icons which I think should be done!

Start taking advantage of Upstart

Replace initscripts with upstart events. Our boot sequence is currently slow, full of race conditions and poor interactions, especially with competition between the series of tasks run by sysv-rc, udev and sometimes just with the kernel. We developed upstart so that we could have a truly event driven boot sequence that would be fast, reliable and flexible; we should take advantage of it.

Developer comments
The primary reason that we're not taking full advantage of Upstart yet is that it still requires some development to have sufficient features to actually be better than sysvinit. You can follow Upstart development at its homepage.

apt-get autoremove command completion
Written by rumli the 19 Mar 08 at 14:07. Category: Installation. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
We have command completion for "apt-get remove", but not yet for "apt-get autoremove" (which I use more that "apt-get remove"). Should be easy to fix since it should have the same behavior as "apt-get remove".

Clarification: I am talking about completing the package name, not the word "autoremove". For example, when Bob types "sudo apt-get autoremove firef" and then presses TAB, the command should complete the "firef" to "firefox".

Use SVG for the default wallpaper

Why is the current default desktop background of Hardy the png version of an image whose svg version is smaller? We should be trying to use vector graphics instead of raster as much as possible.

Better Support for Multi-Core Processors
Written by spyyder the 18 Mar 08 at 19:46. Category: Hardware support. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
We have dual-core, and quad-core processors now, how much are we taking advantage of this additional power. Also we could provide better development tools to take advantage of multi-core processors.

OSS should lead the way in parallel processing, not just playing catch-up. We still don't even take advantage of the fact that most modern processors are now 32/64 hybrid. OS X can run 32/64/PPC(Rosetta) architecture all on the same box. Yes it is difficult, but a discussion should be started on what kind of work could be done in this area.

Easy network sharing   forum
Written by stone the 19 Mar 08 at 06:18. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
It would be great to be able to configure two interfaces with Network Manager or anything else and share the internet from one to another (NAT).

For example if I have cable and wireless, I could be able to share my cable internet and act like an access point.
Or on the other way if I have wireless networking but my friends haven't it would be nice it I could share my network with them thought ethernet.

sudo apt-get autoremove should remove ALL needless librarys.
You can also use deborphan for this, but it would be better if deborphan would be integrated in apt-get.

Protect LTSP from Session Crashes
Written by batonac the 18 Mar 08 at 14:18. Category: Server. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
One of my biggest gripes about LTSP is the lack of thin client session protection. If you use the NX thin client system (http://www.nomachine.com/ or http://freenx.berlios.de/) and your thin client crashes, gets disconnected, or looses power, when you log back in your session is still as you left it, just waiting for you to continue your work (all your programs that were running before the crash, are still running).

If you are using Ubuntu LTSP, however, and your thin client crashes (this is not extremely unusual, albeit very annoying), the session is completely destroyed and all of the programs are shut down. A session saving feature is extremely important, especially during this time in development when not all the LTSP bugs have been completely ironed out yet. Eventually I would also like to see thin client sessions blessed with the ability to log out of the currently used thin client, without shutting down the running programs.

I recognize that this feature will probably steal more server system resources (all users could possibly have running sessions on the server, even though they are not currently logged on), and should therefore be optional, the option should, however, defiantly be available.

Ubuntu's bootloader is a stark black and white screen, filled with confusing options. It gives newbies a moment of indecision, as they try to figure out if they are supposed to choose something, and wonder why there are three or four Ubuntus listed. Then the timer finishes counting down (starting from 10), and the newb begins to feel like he's getting in over his head as his PC boots into Ubuntu.

Too much information up front, stark text-only display, painfully long countdown timer. What would be the alternative? Well, when a Fedora PC is booted up, the first thing the user sees is a graphical splash screen, and "Booting into Fedora (kernel version) in 4 seconds ... " The user can press a key to interrupt and select from kernel versions or alternative operating systems, or just let it boot into Fedora.

Can't we create our own attractive bootloader? Or, failing that, copy-and-paste Fedora's?

I'm bored with dual-screen on GNU/Linux, it really has to have a graphic configuration, and better features.
I would like to move windows from a screen to another, but when I maximize I need it to be in a single screen.

First of all: What is the difference between Preferences and Administration? For example: why do I see 'Encryption and Keyrings' in Preferences and 'Keyring Manager' in Administration? What is the difference between 'Default Printer' and 'Printing'? Why do I have to disable the Tracker under Sessions and not under Search and Indexing? And why are these menu's so large? I have 24 items in Preferences (they don't even fit on my screen!) and 18 items in Administration. To put all this stuff in a popup menu is bad interface design imho. Besides, the number of option should be much smaller. A few suggestions:

- Merge 'Screensaver', 'Screen Resolution' and 'Screens and Graphics'.
- Merge 'Network', 'Network Proxy' and 'Network Tools'.
- Merge 'Update Manager, Synaptic Package Manager, Software Sources'.
- Merge 'Encryption and Keyrings', 'Authorizations', 'Keyring Manager'.

Below are all settings I can visit via the System menu. This is just way too much.

Ubuntu needs to go green. Powertop, Lesswatts and other tools have finally hit the Linux scene to pave the way for better power management. It needs to be said, "if you want your battery to last longest, or have your energy bill be the lowest, you better use Ubuntu Linux."

Provide a simple graphical interface to manage _any_ type of network connection

At the moment it's possible to manage traditional wired and WiFi connections using Network Manager. To connect via a modem, a 3G/GPRS card, over bluetooth to a cell phone or via USB to another device requires that the user installs extra packages, and does a fair amount of configuration that isn't found in Network Manager.

A single unified tool should be provided which allows the user to connect to a network (or internet) via any supported method. It would also be useful to provide an extension to this tool to manage firewall rules and network connection sharing.
