A beatiful goal for our OS

HI!.
First of all: apologize for my english.
I'm an user of Ubuntu since 6.10 and i'm very proud of have more than a year with ubuntu.
But i want to propose one interesting goal which could make the diference between UBUNTU and the resting OS.
My proposal is:
Let's try to build new versions of ubuntu making our OS consume less memory each new version is released.
Microsoft and MAC have a horrible mistake: each new version of their SO requires a lot of memory..let's make ubuntu get the opossite way (as much as posible)...with each new version get a lower profile of minium requirements.
I know that programmers and all the staff will call me idiot. But i really think that this should be one of the first goal to take on mind for the new version of ubuntu.

Have moderators who filter out brainstorms before people can vote on them

Right now there are too many brainstorms to be sifted through and made sense of, spreading the votes of any reasonable person too thin.
Brainstorm should select a group of moderators to filter out ideas that are not feasible, not ideas, bug reports, or poorly worded before they are able to be voted on by the general registered user populace.
It will make Brainstorm less cluttered and allow people to decide on a few well-crafted and feasible brainstorms instead of having to make sense of the mess of 10s of thousands of brainstorms that have no hope of ever coming to fruition ("Include all proprietary codecs by default," "Make Ubuntu better," "Fix this upstream Gnome problem").

Portable Synaptic Extension

The first time i downloaded Hardy Heron, it was using a torrent client in an internet cafe. I then copied the iso on to my usb drive, came home, burned and installed.
At which point i was dead in the water. I had no net connection at the time and therefore could not access the wealth of the repositories.
my idea is a portable extension of synaptic. Installable on any usb drive or external drive:
I install Ubuntu but i have no net access. I plug in my usb drive and open synaptic which now has a feature to Install an executable version of synaptic on my usb drive with my relevant system information.
I then take my usb key to any net cafe plug in my drive, Launch portable Synaptic, connect to the repositories and download and cache my desired programs on my usb drive.
I then take my drive back home, plug it in and open synaptic which then can sync with my usb drive and install my programs.
With a tool like this users can maintain an up-to-date system even where an internet connection is not readily available or affordable. It would also be infinitely more flexible than an entire repository on dvd, although i find that these are also great ideas.

Hi!
I'm a big fan of Images like .iso.
But it is not very easy to mount this Images.
I think there must be a Tool in Nautilus and Dolphin wich alows mounting Images with a double Click. (This feature exists int MacOS). Or with a right click on the file and then there must be a poit "Mount Image". I thick that would be a very use full Tool for every one.
A good example for this is CDemu.
I know there are some ohter good programs, but I think that would be the easyest way and very confortible.

I would like to propose a very specific way to integrate the existing "workspace" architecture in to dual or multiple monitor setups. In essence I would like each monitor to be a different view of the same set of workspaces.
-------------------------
Currently there are a number of approaches to multiple monitors, I personally have found running two separate instances of X to be one of the most useful. This was relatively easy to set up with Nvidia's binary driver, but still has a number of bugs:
1. Inability to drag windows across monitors - they have to stay on their own instance of X.
2. A number of bugs with basic configuration, such as setting the number of workspaces on the non-primary monitor.
3. Firefox will not run on more than one instance of X at the same time.
4. There is significant latency for drop down menus on non-primary monitors.
While most of these issues probably simply need some polish, I think a new approach could greatly improve functionality as well as solve some of these issues, and probably others.
-------------------------
Basically I would like each monitor to be an independent view of the same instance of X (or set of workspaces). Each monitor could show any given workspace and change to a different workspace independently of the other monitors. If two monitors are showing the same workspace then their views are cloned. If an application is dragged on to a workspace that is currently being shown on another monitor then it happens in real time. If one application spans two workspaces then two monitors could be selected to display the entire application. Get the idea?

Ubuntu Compatibility Awards

Issue an award rating to hardware vendors and PC manufacturers that produce the most compatible hardware for Ubuntu users.
You don't have to actually give them anything. Just a plug with a gold star seal of approval. The same as what PC mags do every year for their hardware reviews.
Hopefully a free plug to consumers who just might make a purchase will encourage hardware vendors to bust a move and make more of an effort to support Ubuntu and Linux over all.

I find that I update the bulk of my apps on getdeb.net
The reasons are multiple, but the main ones are that I like more up to date software, and also there is a wider selection of software that "just works" out of the box and is super easy to install.
It's not a security threat because you still have to enter your password to install software.

Make the LiveCD boot menu more friendly.

Upon booting to the LiveCD some users can be overwhelmed. Many users are afraid that even trying Ubuntu from the CD may wipe out all their data. Some changes were made in Hardy that made it a little easier, but your average user could still be confused.
Add more information to the menu, describe for the user what each option does. People are afraid of what they don't know. Adding some information in a side panel would not be hard, would not hinder advanced users, but would help new users understand what they're doing. An image of what this menu might look like is attached in the thread on ubuntuforums.

"Device is now safe to remove" message should only appear once per USB device

It seems that the "Device is now safe to remove" pop-up message, when unmounting a USB device such as a flash drive, assumes that you only have one partition on said device. If you have two or more partitions, it shows up a separate "Device is now safe to remove" message for each volume you unmount, and if you do them all in succession, you get the pop-ups stacked neatly on top of each other in the corner of your screen (observed on Hardy 32-bit and 64-bit).
This presents problems for new users - if you've unmounted one volume, but not another on the same USB device, then the device is clearly not safe for disconnecting yet and the pop-up message is misleading.
Additionally, safely unmounted USB devices still appear in Gnome's "Computer" window (Places->Computer), but finally disappear when you physically disconnect the USB device. This can confuse users as well.
Finally, the way Ubuntu disconnects USB devices seems to be different to how Windows does it. Even though Ubuntu is satisfied that the device has been safely disconnected, the device itself believes otherwise. A typical example is pretty much any Nokia mobile phone that can act as a USB flash device such as a Nokia N95 - upon disconnecting the USB cable after a successful unmount, the phone insists that the disconnection was unclean and that "data could be lost". It only records a clean disconnection from Ubuntu if you perform a shutdown on Ubuntu (suggesting that the phone is only satisfied when the USB stack is finally shutdown). Not a big deal for experienced users who know that a safe disconnection did occur, but will certainly send new users into panic stations.

Support for SD/MMC card readers

For a lot of notebooks support for SD/MMC card readers seems to be insufficient. As these readers are based on TI or similar chipsets, theoretically the kernel must support them, but in fact Ubuntu does not recognise cards in many cases.

Remember the name of hard drives in /media/

When you use multiple USB hard drives you might know the problem: you unplugged one of them and rebooted. Now some drives, even non-USB drives, have changed their names e.g. from "disk-2" to "disk-1". Sounds like no biggie, but suddenly some programs don't find their files anymore and all folder settings and thumbnails are gone.
Idea: Have Ubuntu remember the drives by their unique ID or something and issue the same name whenever it's plugged in.
Greetings
wiberg

Auto hibernation mode

The first of my suggestions is:
Ubuntu should automatically go into hibernation mode when laptop is running on battery mode and has less than 10% of energy left. It will serve as warning as well as prevent loss of data incase of complete discharge.
