Priority: Low
Realisation: hard
------------------
I was reading the openBSD site and what surprised me is that they accuse Linux developers of non-cooperation.
So Ubuntu should be the firs to "lend an helping hand".
If Ubuntu made debian user friendly it can make BSD also.
This could get the exchanging of ideas between this two on higher level and could lead to better not only BSD but also Linux. I mean they are both Unix based OS, how hard could it be??
(even I think this idea is a bit weird but it could get the proverbial ball rolling)

Select several windows in Gnome

Gnome does not allow the selection of several windows in the task bar in order to perform the same operation on all of them. For instance, if you want two send two windows to other desktop, you have to select the first window, send it to the other desktop, and then repeat this operation with the second window. It would be much easier if it would be possible to select both windows (using the Ctrl or Shift keys to tell the user interface that you want to multi-select), and then selecting just the operation that you want to perform.

Calling for The Next Linux Multi- Media Application Suite by Canonical

Everyone is familiar with Open Office’s office suite or Firefox/Mozzilla’s internet suite of Firefox and Thunderbird. Both suites have found homes in Linux and are a staple in many Linux distros.(IMHO) These two application suites have made Linux a viable OS in desktop computing. Yes, I do know other alternatives to OOO and FF are available and, competition is a good thing.
The time has now come for a multi-media Application Suite for the OSS community. Lets face it, Linux lacks many of the creative and multi-media tools that it needs to be a real desktop OS. Many new users to Ubuntu/ Linux just need a simple way to edit video, audio and pics. I know that many apps already exist for these needs but, most of these apps fall short and do not integrate with one another(IMHO).
Is there a really solid OSS video editor for the home video enthusiast? This is what I see with many OSS video editors: Cinelerra is overkill and it lacks the ability to capture DV video. Kino and Diva are just to basic. Pitivi just combines clips, Kdenlive is still very buggy (in beta) also, getting firewire to work is also a real pain for video editing applications too.
A simple to use video editor is much needed in the home user Ubuntu/ Linux desktop. While were talking about video Apps how about integrating a video editor with a separate DVD Video creation app? Is this starting to sound like iMovie and iDVD?
Image editing in Linux needs work too, Gimp is OK for simple editing but should combine a photo manager and needs some work with some of the core tools and its UI to make it easer for the home user. Once more, the Image app should be able to work with the video editing and DVD creation software.
If these apps were created and worked well, a natural side effect could be a push in the use of free or open source formats for media such as ogg. Having a multimedia application suite for creation that pushes open media formats such as OGG would be huge!
So the BIG question is how do you make money off developing this Application suite? Easy, all of these apps create multimedia files that either have hard copy equivalents or can be uploaded to sharing sites like youtube or flicker.

Create a really good DVD Authoring Application

There is no good DVD Authoring software available for the GNOME Desktop. Something easy to use but still powerful. See Apple's iDVD as an good example.
http://www.apple.com/ilife/idvd/
The app should provide a good media integration of other GNOME applications like F-Spot for Photo selecting or Banshee/Rhythmbox for songs selections, etc.

Make Ubuntu more polished visually

An OS, no matter how technologically or ideologically advanced it is, should also be visually appealing.
And Ubuntu, being one of the most beatiful (I mean the default appearance here) distribution of Linux still can't compete with Vista (not to mention Mac OS X).
Here I imly the following:
-icons. All the icons should be converted into vector graphics, so that they were scalable (so that they could look the same everywhere).
-fonts. Even Liberation fonts look better than default GNOME's dejavu, but still they leave much to be desired.
-screensaver. Currently, it's just a black screen. Enough said, I guess. Ubuntu should offer aset of nice screensavers, basic, or OpenGL-driven.
-applets. GNOME applets should grow in numbers and functionality. At least I would suggest a wrapper that could display a Web widget as an applet, so that user could simply paste BB-codes from YouTube, Jaiku, Vimeo or else and see it on his desktop.
-3D effects. There shouldn't be a vast number of them, but all of them should be quality-driven. Just look how bad is Compiz rendering as you make anything that drives windows borders into curves - they are edgy and twisted.
-wallpapers. I know, Deviantart contest is on, but here is also another point: Ubuntu should provide numerous wallpapers out-of-box, and all of them should suit the default colour scheme. The same stays for login screen.
-themes. Ubuntu should provide themes that change the appearance more globally. Not only GNOME's appearance, but all the apps, bootloader, login screen, screensaver.
-customization. Changing Ubuntu's appearance isn't really easy these days, since you can't tune up all the aspects in one place. I mean, you can change the theme, but you should work really hard to make your style as sole as the defaut one - Qt, GTK and other (wxWindows, etc) applications share different configs. Just try to switch to a darker theme and you'll learn how many elements would require tuning. Ubuntu can offer great means of customization, but that doesn' mean that an average user is able to make a cool-looking style.
-bootloader. That was already mentioned, but still. Ubuntu should show text mode at all. Currently, it can occasionally fall back to console for a while, which is discomforting.
-hibernation/suspend screen. The same.

Create a series of online services. Perhaps under a domain such as ubuntu.net or linux.net.
When people install Ubuntu, their e-mail client such as Evolution, Thunderbird, KMail and IM clients such Pidgin comes with presets.
So they can login to MSN from Pidgin via address like user@ubuntu.net.
They can also use it to login on Jabber/XMPP.
It also works like an OpenID, so you can use it to login on Brainstorm, Launchpad, and perhaps some bugzillas and perhaps SourceForge.net and Freshmeat.net.
Basically setup an Jabber/XMPP gateway, a e-mail server, and an OpenID provider, so that every Ubuntu/Linux can get a user@ubuntu.net address that he can use to access mail, login to websites and chat on MSN and Jabber/XMPP.

Ubuntu's burning apps Brasero and Nautilus Burn, are not able to make a simple cd copy. My wife just tried to use Nautilus and Brasero to copy a music cd and both apps reported writing errors!
This sucks, ubuntu should have a stable disc burning app which is more bulletproof. I had to use k3b to copy the disc finally.

What about creating a bundle of Ubuntu LTS and a specific hardware configuration which is known to work perfect and stable with Ubuntu. Like Apple does with MacOSX and Mac Mini, iMac, etc. hardware, but non-proprietary.

Promote Ubuntu as Organic Software

Canonical should promote the Ubuntu OS as organic OS, like Mozilla does with firefox.
http://www.mozilla-europe.org/en/firefox/organic/
In this way, ubuntu could probably reach more and new users.
Everybody wants organic stuff nowadays (at least here in germany :) ). I think this could help ubuntu to reach new groups of users, e.g. educational properties, schools, and many more.

How about this... my idea is a complementary idea to this one:
http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/1514/
why not just pay one dollar ($1) to thank developers for their work. Not more. If you really want to contribute it's the easiest way to do so. For any country one dollar is not a significant loss to any budget. It's a very modest yet useful way to thank someone that is working to give you something for free.

Personally, I don't like the way Ubuntu installs/uninstalls programs.
I come from using win98, winME, winXP, and microsoft's worst work vista. So I'm used to double clicking the setup files to install. Ubuntu doesn't have that as far as I've seen.
So I think they should add this to Ubuntu or make a tool to allow this.

When you play 'corrupted' videos in vlc, it just skips the frames it can't read. Totem on the other hand stops entirely and throws an errormessage at you. This is annoying. I'd like to see this kind of immunity in totem...

Totem by default does not give support to external subtitles, the ones you may download from interenet, and other players like VLC or Mplayer does not give good re-synchronisation like Media Player Classic on Windows.
