the recent post from Andruk http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/9645/ brought me to this idea:
Use a standard name for config files.
wish me luck on getting votes since this goes all the way up to debian / linux / the whole *NIX cloud...
i'm affraid this will make a new record in negative votes.
tho positive votes might not make it happen but they WOULD EVENTUALLY get the message to a higher place.
.conf would be fine, easy to locate and back up.
bet there is also php.ini
Personally i think this is the way forward to make backups
it's a waste of space and time to make complete images of files they never change or evaluate with updates.
eventually make a difference in kinds of configs
.ini for initialise
.conf for internal configuration
.somethingelse for host specific settings (IP, hostname related)
or something else in that extend but STANDARD.
hehe this is sooooo not up to me... but i hope this post will kick up some dust. :-D

Implement often used command lines as GUI.

Make command lines into GUI buttons or menu options.
Linux experts can make command lines or scripts available in a GUI form.
Users can add oft used command lines so that they can easily be found later.
Demarcation between technical command line functionality and user friendliness. Sites that have that "just run this at the command line" phrase could provide a link that auto installs it to the GUI / menu option.

Auto hibernation mode

The first of my suggestions is:
Ubuntu should automatically go into hibernation mode when laptop is running on battery mode and has less than 10% of energy left. It will serve as warning as well as prevent loss of data incase of complete discharge.

Changing the size of windows/applications

Hello,
there is a very annoying thing in Ubuntu: that is very hard to catch the window/application border or corner to change the window/application size.
It would be good if this would be improved in the future! (mainly the corners when you want to change with one movement the lenght and the height)

Add Refinement, _then_ Features!

We need to have refinement in Ubuntu more than ANYTHING else.
Heck, we can't even get a decent resolution change tool. How hard is that? Test your updates before you distribute them!
They crash Ubuntu installs now.
Add more, and more stable driver support.
You will win thousands more users.
I use Ubuntu every day(it is the most user-friendly Linux OS..
when it works) and have installed it on many computers.
Sometimes though, people will erase it for one reason:
lack of refinement.
However, how can we support Ubuntu if it crashes on it's own updates, and you can barely change resolution?
Networking stinks too.
In this aftermath of Vista, we have a huge chance for a foothold in the OS market. As a whole, Ubuntu beats Vista to the punch. However, it has some critical needs before it sees real publicity, and real support from Dell.
Stop using bleeding-edge technologies-use what is tried and true. Wubi is great, but is it even out of beta?
Let UI be the only feature-difference in 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex) and the rest be repairs. We're really risking it here, using bleeding-edge stuff, without decent driver support and crappy networking and resolution tools. If we can't' get the basics to JUST WORK, then we're sunk in the OS market.

Hello,
I propose to integrate NM 0.7 in Hardy Heron because:
- the 0.6 version give many problems
- the 0.7 version is in Fedora 9 and others distributions
- the 0.7 version is more more more great :p
- it is normal to work on the 0.6 version for Hardy?
so, please to vote for my idea :p
bye,
fred

The possible duplicates function for idea submission should not be sorted by votes, but by relevance of the keywords.
Why? Because the most relevent, is sometimes -300 votes, which wouldn't even show on the list currently (because there are dozens of ideas with more votes).

Allow lock on suspend/hibernate (as compaired to one option for both)

For me (and I suspect a lot of people with laptops) suspend & hibernate have different usage cases.
When I suspend your system its usually suspended for short periods of time and you want it back up straight away
When I hibernate your system its usually for an extend reason with the reason to hibernate instead of shut-down, simply being to restore the applications to their previous state, but as its going to take as long as a cold boot, speed isn't an issue.
As when I suspend I want to get back to my system instantly I dont want to lock the screen, but as when I hibernate Im in no rush id rather have the system lock.
*I realise when a computer is suspended, but the battery dies causing a hibernate, the system would be left unlocked, but this is a rare case and can be worked around at a later date.

I want fullscreen webcam conversations with good encoding and both video & audio.
Then you can talk with people, face-to-face, kinda like if they were there. It gets you much closer to each other, and its easier, you don't have to type.

Fix well-known bugs for a new release

Before every new release of Ubuntu, some articles pop up stating that a well-known bug of some sort, that has been around for a year or longer, is still in the development version.
I understand that it is nigh impossible to fix every submitted bug fast, but this is bad publicity and it's really takes away the excitement of a new release when a user upgrades to find the same problem he had before.
My suggestion would be to, on the one hand, try and improve the speed with which bugs are fixed, like the 5-a-day initiative, and on the other hand, focus on fixing well-known and longstanding bugs before every release.
Since only one category can be chosen I put it under Hardware support, but it also concerns Marketing, Security and System

Windows equivalent wireless access.

I am running Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG card on my laptop. Intel makes opensource drivers for linux. My cousin is running some broadcom card (closed source drivers). In both cases I find locations around my house and at my campus where I am able to connect to the wireless in Windows XP, but NOT in Ubuntu Gutsy. In all of these locations the access point I am trying to connect to is OPEN, with no security or password required. On both laptops I am able to connect to access points in Ubuntu regardless of wpa/wep keys used under "better conditions".
Basically the wireless cards are working as usual in both laptops, its just that when the signal is low or some other condition, it makes connecting to the access point not work under UBUNTU. Yet from the same exact location, if I boot into windows I can EASILY connect to the access points and browse the web.
I have a feeling this problem is outside of the drivers/hardware and perhaps somewhere in the design of the protocol.
This is a serious issue as wireless internet connectivity is the required for most tasks which are done on laptops. I have been running Linux for over a few years and have always blamed this problem on drivers/hardware.
(Had to boot into windows after almost a year today to get my work done!)

Browser Sync like Google Browser Sync

I use a total of 3 computers daily and Google Browser Sync helps a lot in consistent web browsing. It not only syncs bookmarks, but cookies, passwords and sessions too.
http://www.google.com/tools/firefox/browsersync/
It is great because I can continue browsing juts where I left it on any machine.
THE PROBLEM IS that Frirefox 3 is NOT SUPPORTED, and there seems to be no plan on google's part to continue the extensions development.
Such a project is really important, please make one like this! (If it supported konqueror, opera or even IE and safary - well that would make a lot of people happy...)

I have found that whenever I am trying to blank a cd I have to go through all different programs to do so, I know Brasero is included in 8.04 which has this option but it would be a nifty feature to be able to quickly blank a cd in the nautilus burner.

The default directory to save files in most software is in the users home directory.
i.e. /home/bob/
I propose to change it, to take advantage of the specific media subdirectories which already exist in the users home directory.
GIMP -> /home/bob/Pictures/
Text editor (gedit) -> /home/bob/Documents/
OpenOffice.org -> /home/bob/Documents/
Rhythmbox (open) -> /home/bob/Music/
Totem, VLC, MPlayer (open) -> /home/bob/Videos/

Actually, we have 5 wallpapers, 9 themes and 80+ SCREENSAVERS!!!
WHAT THE HELL!
Who need that amount of screensavers?
I think we should vote five to the default installation, and the other ones comes with a optional package?
Isn't gnome "keep it simple"?
For me just a "dim screen" is enough for default.

Everytime that I want to type something up in spanish, theres always some crazy hoops that i have to go through. Be it dead keys, or inserting a symbol every time i want a letter with an accent, it's all around pretty hard.
Windows had the alt + that made it really easy to do so. I think it would be really cool if Ubuntu had a way to type in stuff like that. I'm not sure exactly what the "official" name for this kind of thing is, but hopefully my idea makes sense.

Graphical Interface to format Pen Drives an other Hot Plug devices
|

I think Ubuntu needs a proper, pretty, functional, simple and friendly Graphical Interface to format Pen Drives and other Hot Plug devices. Because gParted and others do it really good but are generics, a lay person new on Linux or a lay person newly arrived from Windows™ can do serious data loss if he/she choose the wrong device on the partition table for example. And it only format, don't have any special feature to Pen Drives and other Hot Plugs. A Specific GUI (Graphical User Interface) only to Pen Drives and other Hot Plugs like Cellphones and MP3™ players would be so a great feature and help. With unique features like pass and covert videos - using existing codecs like mencode - to MP4™ players for example.
I think it is easy, just create some Glade, Gambas2 or Gazpacho + GTK, cause the features are already there, ready to become together. Like i said, a GUI that links directly to USB or Bluetooth on the System and identify only these devices, use already existing codecs, and already existing functions/commands like mkfs, lsusb and othes, and pop up it all friendly to the user, to let he/she choose safely what he/she want to do.
Edit: +add christopher_lees suggestion - "Right-click on the device and choose "Format Drive...", give it a name, give it a filesystem, and click Format. An absolute necessity."
kernel_script - Just add a gksu on that action and would be perfect.
Examples:
=Hot Plug Devices Config= (HPDC)
"That tool allow you to easy manage all your Hot Plug Devices like Pen Drives, Cellphones, MP3™ players, MP4™ players, Bluetooth Cellphones and others. You can easily and safely format these devices, convert you favorite videos and music for you MP3™ and MP4™ players, and, rip your CDs direct to these Devices"
And some example of tools that could be used:
mencoder, ffmpeg, some code fork from SoundConverter and Sound Juicer, or ,just click on the option on HPDC and call them, mount and umount options specifically for these devices and format options for these specific devices. (like just put some direct paths like mount or umount /media/sda etc)
