bug
Written by Eldmannen the 30 Mar 08 at 16:57. Category: Security. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I created a new Guest account, then I stripped it of all user privileges.

Then I found out, that it could access all MY private data files in MY home directory.

Please fix it so that other users cannot read the home directories of other people. This is a breech of privacy.

it's so awesome. :] I think it should at the very least be in repos, but I think it'd be awesome if we could include a theme using it as an option in the Appearance dialog.

TRT Web Service Complete Integration
Written by ThaSniz the 26 Mar 08 at 19:17. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I'm the webmaster and the mantainer of this web-service.
http://www.trtsys.com

It can do a lot of interesting things and i was thinking that a complete integration with Ubuntu can be a good idea.

Shortly it can:
-manage private document online
-upload until 34MB for each file
-share these private documents with other users
-create well-formatted documents with a word-like online application
-register post-it
-send formatted documents and post it to other user
-a friend list
-search engine for other users
-future system of messaging between registered user (like e-mails but internal to the system)

Tecnical web-service:
-a linker used to download every type of file on the web

I can give the source of the entire system (it's not a prebuildt cms i've built on my own with a friend), all the information that you need, modification to the web site and support.

I'd really like a complete integration with Ubuntu because i think it can be so, so useful.

Thanks for the time you spent reading this idea and excuse me for my bad english (i'm italian).

Sniz

Edit:
The system is Open-Source and you can find the source here: http://www.trtsys.com/reav_resources/trt-source-30.zip

merge ubuntu and kubuntu alla fedora, OpenSuse
Written by volt4ire the 20 Mar 08 at 17:32. Category: Installation. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Instead of having separate distros for GNOME and KDE versions of Ubuntu, there should be one centralized version. When a user goes to install Ubuntu,(s)he should be prompted about which desktop environment to use. Because many new users have no clue what this means, there should be a box that says "I'm not sure", which would select GNOME (if this is what the community wants). This would help unify the splintered Ubuntu and Kubuntu communities and would without a doubt send Ubuntu over PCLinuxOS on DistroWatch.com b/c currently Kubuntu, with 35% of Ubuntu's collective users, is counted as a separate distro.

Conky as a default system monitor
Written by RYNIEK the 20 Mar 08 at 23:10. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Conky is a light weight system monitor. It would be great if in newest update's or Ubuntu versions, Conky would be as a default. But to make good conky config, user should know script language. And here's my idea to make GUI Conky Maker or something like that. For new Ubuntu users it will be very simple to make their first&own conky config without knowing the script language.

What do You think about it?

Ubuntu is the name chosen for a global project and a distro based on Gnome. Kubuntu is another distro based on kde from the very same project.
I believe they deserve the same support from the project since Gnome and Kde are the most popular desktop manager out there.
It seems quite obvious to me, the project is very much focused on one and only distro, its first baby : ubuntu.
And it shows. Kubuntu web site looks quite poor and unprofessional compared to ubuntu. Most graphic choices like the kdm default theme (even if it's supposed to be a matter of taste) look, again, unprofessional. And finally the whole distro doesn't seem to have the same amount of attention when it comes to details (one example among others: the little thing on ubuntu warning the user about the existence of proprietary drivers for display which does not exist on kubuntu).
I've been told once, like a year ago, by an ubuntu dev that the situation is such because the project doesn't feel like fragmenting its market share.
Whatever is the official position of the project, I don't think you should do things half way.
The Kde project is itself in full evolution with Kde 4. It does deserve full support from ubuntu.

Thank you for reading.

Netbeans

/* SORRY, BIG LAPSE. My apology to everyone.
What I meant is that on Ubuntu DVD should be Netbeans, JDK, etc. So programmers can check and install those applications with Ubuntu.
I haven't seen those applications when I was installing Ubuntu.

Once again, my apology to everyone!!! */

netbeans IDE should be pre-installed with ubuntu.

Include RubyOnRails2 into LiveCD
Written by mikhailov the 8 Mar 08 at 15:08. Category: Programming. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Include RubyOnRails into LiveCD will provide a chance to learn a excellent programming language on great OS (just boot on CD)

Ruby on Rails is a breakthrough in lowering the barriers of entry to programming.Powerful web applications that formerly might have taken weeks or months to develop can be produced in a matter of days.

Visual Studio clone
Written by taron the 13 Mar 08 at 14:51. Category: Programming. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Maybe you know Microsoft's Visual Studio, a very nice program especially for programmer beginners.

We should clone this program (or make a similiar) to write Linux GTK/Qt apps with it.

I know this is a big work, but it's worth it I think.

Terminal (quicly access old commands)
Written by tbrminsanity the 18 Mar 08 at 18:32. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I want to see in the terminal that when you type in anything and then press up or down, that it will go through the history and find the first command that started with the typed out string. This would save me lots of time instead of going through up to 20 commands to try to find the one I want.

Hire the "Dream Team" to defend Hans Reiser in court
Written by Eldmannen the 18 Mar 08 at 02:17. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. Won't implement
Hans Reiser is currently imprisoned, facing a murder trial. He was accused of the murder of his wife Nina Reiser, after she disappeared while cheating on him with Sean Sturgeon, a self-admitted serial killer.

Hire the "dream team" legal team, consisting of Alan Dershowitz, F. Lee Bailey, Robert Shapiro and Johnnie Cochran who defended O.J. Simpson in the murder case against his wife. O.J Simpson never spent a single day in prison.

This will allow Hans Reiser to continue the developement of the 'reiser4' file system. A revolutionary file system which is 10 to 15 times faster than its most serious competitor, the ext3 file system currently used in Ubuntu.

Give Ubuntu a face
Written by melhor the 17 Mar 08 at 14:28. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
When I read News about M$ or Mac there is someone (Ballmer, Jobs, Gates) who represents this particular OS. I think it would be a great benefit for Ubuntu (Linux) if there is more than a screenshot of gnome/kde for a headline.

I know Mark Shuttleworth is present at the news, but i think (whether he or someone else is doing it) it should be more, like a jobs!

Create a KDE catagory
Written by _michael the 17 Mar 08 at 21:15. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Creating a separate Kubuntu Brainstorm webpage may not be the best idea because many ideas affect both Kubuntu and Ubuntu.

However, a catagory for ideas specific to KDE will put many KDE ideas out of the more GNOME dominated section.

It would allow users of KDE to voice their opinions, and also better organisation for KDE or GNOME specific ideas.

Add DTrace to Ubuntu
Written by Eldmannen the 18 Mar 08 at 00:44. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
DTrace is a comprehensive dynamic tracing framework. It is designed to give operational insights that allow users to tune and troubleshoot applications and the OS itself. Special consideration has been taken to make it safe to use in a production environment. For example, there is minimal probe effect when tracing is underway, and no performance impact associated with any disabled probe; this is important since there are tens of thousands of DTrace probes that can be enabled.

Prevent console from getting garbled
Written by Eldmannen the 18 Mar 08 at 00:50. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Sometimes when you use the console or terminal todo stuff, like for example 'cat' a (binary) file, then the characters in the terminal might get garbled.

Make some thing that prevents it from getting garbled.
