I've been playing around with Apple Mac OS X Leopard and, although the system didn't impress me that much, I loved one feature that I'd really like to see in Ubuntu.
It´s call Quick Look, and allows you to view the contents of a file without open its default application.
This is great when you have a folder with different types of files (JPG, MPG, DOC) and you want see the content of the files quickly without open many applications (Eog, Totem, OpenOffice Writer in this case)
You can look how this work in Mac OS X on here, here and here.

A beatiful goal for our OS

HI!.
First of all: apologize for my english.
I'm an user of Ubuntu since 6.10 and i'm very proud of have more than a year with ubuntu.
But i want to propose one interesting goal which could make the diference between UBUNTU and the resting OS.
My proposal is:
Let's try to build new versions of ubuntu making our OS consume less memory each new version is released.
Microsoft and MAC have a horrible mistake: each new version of their SO requires a lot of memory..let's make ubuntu get the opossite way (as much as posible)...with each new version get a lower profile of minium requirements.
I know that programmers and all the staff will call me idiot. But i really think that this should be one of the first goal to take on mind for the new version of ubuntu.

Reset certain settings on reinstall

Having set-up Ubuntu to have it's /home directory on a separate partition, a reinstallation has certain nasty consequences. Some examples:
* File associations remain intact, even if the application does not exist / is not installed yet;
* Menu entries are preserver too, even if the application does not exist / is not installed yet.
Now I have a defunct "gThumb" entry in Gnome's menu, and .mkv files are being opened with the unavailable "gnome-mplayer".
Wouldn't it be better if certain settings (like file associations, and menu entries) got reset (or at least verified) by the installer?

I have been jumping around with a lot of computers, and installing ubuntu on many of the computers that I have. Yet every time I install it, I need to re-download all the programs that I use. Granted that it's much easier to install stuff on ubuntu, it would still be convenient to have a way to save the information about all the packages I have installed. It would be awesome to save all the system settings as well.

People keep focusing about what's great on Ubuntu. But being over-enthusiastic can be dangerous, and we should study all the angry reviews of bloggers, newbies to make a list of things people didn't like about Ubuntu. Just like the Fridge tracks success stories all over the world, the Sink will track every negative point about Ubuntu so that the developers' attention can be drawn to it.
We will summarize any review available on the web, any mail we receive, any negative forum post, and in general any negative feedback about Ubuntu.
We should create a way for Ubuntu users to send us easily URLs of sites with negative reviews by an Firefox extension that would send us the URL and also a comment from the user (not compulsory)
Having a separate field for the URL would allow duplicate detection, and permit us to see the top problems about Ubuntu.
We could design this as part of the bts or settle a new BTS, but it should stay very simple so that the issues are not buried.
Eventually, when the problem is solved on our side, we should send a mail to the author, telling him that we appreciated his review, and that we (or upstream) fixed it.

COMPIZ : Don't use opacity on desktop icons when set trensparent cube

I don't know if "Compiz post" is really a part of ubuntu brainstorm but :
English :
-----------
I enjoy set permanent transparent cube for keeping an eye on some appz on other desktop. but setting it apply transparency on icons too and with opacity=10% cant see/use desktop icons!
An option for disable this function on icons let the user to use this function using desktop.
Sorry for my bad English =)
Français :
------------
Take a look at my ideas

Totem features required:
*improve playing videos.the skip the scene or seek to new position doesnt work
not with arrow keys nor with mouse.
*improve the interface, nice looking better than wmp 11 and mac os x video players there are lot of good looking applications in windows like
Powerdvd,Divx,Gom player(although its open source),vlc, real player, quick time, jet audio, zoom player etc over 100 and more importantly they all play even flv files, mkv files.even winamp plays videos
*-functionality like vlc but with better interface
*-equalizer support and plugins
*-easy support to install plugins,themes,visualilzations
There are very few players natively available to linux esp gnome.
for kde :kaffine, now dragon player ,kmplayer etc
but for gnome
buggy totem,xine age old
vlc works on all platforms but its interface isnt that good.i applaud linux for
list of audio players like amarok, exaile, song bird, banshee etc

Ubuntu needs to get more out there. I think that there should be an Official Ad for Ubuntu. It doesn't have to be on TV but people search youtube and only find stuff about Compiz Fusion or Beryl! If Ubuntu had an actual Ad that was on youtube and on their website not only showing the graphics, but also the usefulness, people may be more inclined to switch.

Most (or all) of the editable fields where you can put information aren't undoable. My idea is to always be able to ctrl-z any settings field you have just changed.

Pidgin is a good program to chat on all protocols, but a webcam plugin is still missing.
The developers aren't decided to code webcam support, but having this in Pidgin is very needed.
Or why not code this plugin for emesene? But you can only use the MSN protocol at the moment!

Option for filesystem check at shutdown

I would like a new option added to the shutdown dialog. As well a Hibernate, Restart, Shut Down, etc I would like an option which allows me to request a filesystem check during shutdown. Whether the check is successful or not, the system must still shut down (think e2fsck -n). This will result in the resetting of the volume mount counter on a successful check OR a forced check on the next startup.
I stress that this should be an option.

Of all the things in Ubuntu and Gnome, the improvements that Nautilus needs are really just simple ones. There is not an option to search your files in Nautilus even though modern operating systems like OSX and Vista have already added it.
In Windows under explorer.exe there is a seperate textbox for searching files and in firefox and OSX when you type it just updates instantly. In BASH you just type something like the following: ls *.txt and you will get all .txt files. This functionality is missing.

Synaptic should show a search bar with focus by default when started

When one starts Synaptics manager it takes a long time to be available for use (I am using 1.7GHz Dualcore/1GB RAM!!!).
After that we have to click on "Search" and then type what we want. But most of the time when starting Synaptic the first thing you want is to search for something.
So I suggest that "Search" should not depend on a click to show it's input text bar but rather it could show a large bar at the top with focus as it fires up, so we may start typing as soon as we see the program running.
After one search is complete it should focus the search box back so we search again without our tired mouse.

add a "view in english" button to all error messages

Hello!
When you use Ubuntu in any other language than English, when an error message is shown, of course, it's shown in your own language.
...But, as the best way to solve the problem, is googling it, and as most of the documentation there is in english, it would be a good thing to have a button (or a right-click entry) on that kind of message to print (or copy to the clipboard) the exact syntax of the original message. When we try to translate it ourselves, we can't really now how it was written in the original message thought there are different translations for a single message that could be used.
This would also be great to help us submit bugs.
[EDIT] : As some of you said, showing standard error numbers would help us finding response, and wouldn't force the users to install English languages packs)
[/EDIT]
Thanks
Brice
