Delay Hardy if necessary; shouldn't LTS focus on Bug Fixing?

I have read a lot of posts stating so many bugs in hardy and it will still be released. It is also slower to boot. THIS ISN'T HOW IT SHOULD BE!!!
Shouldn't LTS releases focus on bug fixing and stability and reliability, then speed, then other stuff?
We might have to delay hardy a couple of months if it is really this bad. I don't want a messed up computing system!

If a users system has hardware that doesn't have a driver installed by ubuntu the system should tell the user, and suggest where to to get the driver.
For example:

This notification should not be annoying and should be cancellable.

I think that it is not logical to have the same system which is Ubuntu with:
two differents logo, two colors "brown for Ubuntu and blue for Kubuntu",and two install cds.
why not to make like the other distro"openSuse,Mandriva.." and to use simple only Cd with only one logo and only one color that can be easier

Remove Ebay from default search engines list in firefox

Based on idea 5321, by Eldmannen (about removing yahoo).
We should remove ebay from the default installed searches, because:
- It reduces competition with other auction sites.
- Recently there was a uproar about changes in ebay which make in some case make it unfair. I agree!
- Ebay VERY heavily pushes Paypal, which is acknowledged by many to be very dodgy. A lot of people know someone who has been screwed by ebay. And here in aus, I had to upgrade my account because they had a bug which prevented me accessing my money (which is very unprofessional). The freenet Project owner was also screwed by ebay (and it demonstrated they don't research at all claims made against customers), and another friend of mine was charged 2x the amount he was supposed to be receiving because someone used a stolen credit card against him (so seems they profit from illegal credit cards).
- If ebay was a bank, they would have a 24/7 riot outside their building by customers who were screwed.
- Ebay doesn't exactly listen to feedback. If are a typical large company, where you have no way of providing feedback (if you scream at them over the phone, maybe they will let you speak to a manager). But they clearly dont care much (no forums).
Its to our advantage to promote competition within the auction sites. More competition means lower costs for us, and better payment methods. We should try to encourage the development of a world wide auction site that is more consumer/seller friendly, that actually promotes active feedback and improvement.
There is nothing stopping a patch being applied to the firefox code to prevent ebay being a default search engine (and it shouldn't be hard to do).

Automatically disable the touchpad when you are typing by specifying a number of seconds the touchpad stays inactive after you hit a button on the keyboard. This is very useful on laptops where it is very easy to accidentily touch the touchpad while typeing.

Add option for Ubuntu branded wallpapers

First suggested in this bug report:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/206375
The idea would be to add versions of all the pre-included wallpapers that would include the Ubuntu logo tastefully superimposed. These would not be the default wallpapers, but would be an option that users could choose to switch to if they wanted to promote the Ubuntu brand. Particularly applicable to folks that present in front of crowds not familiar with Ubuntu or the wallpapers used in Ubuntu.

Hey, I know that some of you thinks that yes, why should Ubuntu copy other OS's when it can be unique.
And of course I think it should be too.
But face it, OSX (especially Leopard) has some really cool stuff, like the document preview functions and time machine.
Ubuntu already has/will have features like tracker, cheese (photo booth), and come one, spaces? Ubuntu and almost all other linux distros has had different workspaces for ages.
The reason why a lot of Windows users don't use Ubuntu is because they want the latest games and all that, and I can get that.
But really, OSX doesn't really have unique stuff like that, it's based on Unix, and most people use it because it looks amazing and has alot of cool features.
If Ubuntu would just focus a bit on the design, and try to be appealing to all the "trendy" people that use OSX too, you could get alot of users to Ubuntu.

Automatic mounting of present filesystems

Each time I change my partitions, I have to do 'it' again. Yes, you know what I mean. Change /etc/fstab to point to the new partitions. Or suppose I insert a USB harddisk with more than one partition. I either have to mount those partitions myself, or edit, yes again, /etc/fstab. But then I reboot without the external drive attached.... "Kernel panic, filesystem not found". That happens automatically when you have a ext2/ext3 filesystem in /etc/fstab that doesn't exist.
Now, you might say "You don't often change your partitions, do you?" Yes, that's true. But think of a newbie. Installs Ubuntu, likes Ubuntu, says "Hey this Linux thing is wicked, lets try uhm... say Mandriva". Good, he installs Mandriva, but what happens? The partitions are messed up, Ubuntu won't boot anymore. In a very bad case, the previous Ubuntu /-partition had the same name as the /-partiton of the other Linux install, resulting in something very messy.
Now, this all can be avoided very easy. Like any problem, solving this problem requires eleminating the root of the problem. Yes. /etc/fstab. But how do we have to eleminate it? Simply removing it isn't an option, since that would result in a kernel panic. So, you say, "Well it's simply impossible to eleminate /etc/fstab". Think again. Mac OS X is a good example of a Unix system that doesn't require /etc/fstab. Even better: /etc/fstab contains a single line: "# This file is present for backwards compatibility. It may be removed all together from future versions." This can become reality for Ubuntu too. How, do you say? Very simple actually. Somewhere in the early boot process, mount -a gets called. As we all know, this will mount everything in /etc/fstab. So remove that. Next we need something to replace it. A daemon that cooperates with hal, udev, ... to check for new devices. Or even merge hal and udev with this daemon. The daemon -- lets call it "mountd" -- will check for any new filesystems. It checks if it can mount it, if it can, it will do so, at a predefined location, such as /media/devname where devname is something like hda1, sdb3, ... This directory will be created if it doesn't exist. It also has to check if a filesystem hasn't been just unmounted by the user, so it won't remount it again. This can be done by patching umount to log the devices it has unmounted.
But how about special mount-points? How about homedirectories? Well, that's solvable, too. In the root of each partition which has to get mounted on a special location, a text file called ".mountpoint" will be created which contains the path where to mount that partition, e.g. /home. Mountd will check for such a file once a partition is mounted, next it will unmount that partition, and remount it on the proper location.

Ubuntu uses a known bad NTFS-3g driver in it's repositories.
Please keep Ubuntu up to date, since this might (and does) cause data loss, especially on mobile, NTFS formatted hard drives.
Here's a link to ntfs-3g forum thread that verifies this

The bug about which you talk has been fixed in Hardy (LP Bug #229000). Further, this is not the right place for new version requests.

I've 2 distros installed on my laptop: Ubuntu Gutsy and Arch Linux! The feel with arch is that it's whippy. From the other side ubuntu is sluggish. Sure I know that my system is not so up to date (a 1.5 Ghz centrino 512 M Ram) but Arch work very well on it with the same services loaded as in ubuntu.
So I think Ubuntu can do something to improve performance.

I guess everybody has experienced the rather long boot up times in Ubuntu (particularly with laptops). I know they are already working on it, but the change from feisty to gutsy was a pain in the ass in terms of boot up speed.
A default WinXP installation beats Ubuntu's boot up time by far!! That shouldn't be allowed fellas!!
I therefore propose to the development team (both Ubuntu and by extension Gnome)to work on the improvement of boot up times in Ubuntu systems.

Commercial driver support for linux

Drivers must also be created by the hardware manufactures. Have you an idea to get this done?
Driver support is real good in linux these days. Onnly I can't help thinking this is only because the linux community is working hard to get it this way.
Don't get me wrong, I love Opensource and working on it at regular basis. But shouldn't the companies deliver their own drivers? even if they are not opensource? I mean, this way we keep running after the facts.
When buying a new product I always send an request for a linux driver to the sales department. I know this is not the right departement and they don't have a driver, but I think this is one way to remind them of linux. This way it gets around in the organisation.
Any suggestions how to get this done? (Reminder: This is a brainstorm section, no stupid ideas exist here).

Make the System default to Metric Units

Most of the planet uses the Metric System. So why does the system default to imperial units? Make A4 the default paper size for printing, only two countries don't use it. Most people don't know what inches are so cm or mm should be the default.
