Ubuntu (one) Movie Store:
Written by Oranges10e the 12 Feb 11 at 21:07. Related project: Ubuntu Software Center. New
Hi,

I like the idea of the Music Store, but how about a MOVIE STORE, which could be implemented in the Ubuntu Software-Center? I mean, Ubuntu is intented to be for the mainstream and easy to use, right? I know how often I want to watch a movie, but have to boot to Windows, just to fire up iTunes - it sucks.

Solution #1: Add to Music Store:
Written by Oranges10e the 12 Feb 11 at 21:07.
I would also like to have stuff in ONE spot, meaning that I would like to see the movie- AND music store INSIDE of the Software-Center, because it's much easier to look out for or to find, since that is the place I have to go to, in order to buy the DVD playback-software (and everything else anyway).

Anyway, I think, if the price per title is right, this could be a nice feature. I know "I'd buy that for a dollar!" (

Solution #2: Add to standard multimedia player

Instead of adding this store to the software-center (used for software), add it to banshee (next standard multimedia player).

Solution #3: Add To Ubuntu One, But Fix Ubuntu One
Written by supermike the 20 Feb 11 at 17:25.
I like the idea of Ubuntu One, but since I was already a DropBox user, this conflicted with my DropBox and I was getting crazy errors and I ended up disabling my Ubuntu One. That needs to be fixed, first. But I like the idea of Ubuntu having a streaming movie library to rival NetFlix. So, instead of me paying into NetFlix with an annual fee, and using a spare Windows laptop, I could pay to Canonical and get the same thing, but have it working on Ubuntu. Currently you cannot view NetFlix on Ubuntu because of the Silverlight issue, and even Moonlight is blocked with it. (I suspect Microsoft dirty tricks at play here -- just a hunch.) As for Hulu being a solution, it's not really a solution because they don't have new release, mainstream movies. Anyway, in the end, I would think it would be a huge boost to Canonical's finances to support Ubuntu.

Less cluttered interface for Nautilus
Written by crephoto the 1 Sep 10 at 02:03. Related project: Nautilus. Implemented
Right now, Nautilus's interface (namely the Main Toolbar) has a lot of clutter-making buttons, removing valuable screen space for actually viewing the files (the things you are actually using Nautilus to view)

Selected solution (#1): Move the essential buttons out of the Main Toolbar
Written by crephoto the 1 Sep 10 at 02:03.
Move the essential buttons onto what is right now the Location Bar, leaving only extra buttons on the "Main" Toolbar that could be hidden and remove clutter.
This would also may call for renaming the Main Toolbar to just the Toolbar has it is no longer housing essential buttons.

A mockup I made:

A more organized internet
Written by aubrey14775 the 6 Feb 11 at 08:43. Global category: Server. Already implemented
The internet as it currently stands is a mess and dangerous.
My 8 year old granddaughter googled "girl games", you can imagine the results she got. I was not impressed!
Now I am working on a project that has the potential to do what ICANN should have done (but did not do) from the start.
One of the requirements is a DNS server app that has expanded capabilities.

Solution #1: Expanded capabilities of the DNS server app
Written by aubrey14775 the 6 Feb 11 at 08:43.
I propose altering the DNS app installed by default on Ubuntu Server so that if the domain being requested is not already in cache, to check if the domain being requested conforms to a rule (example: starts with an apostrophe ! ) and if it does, to make the request to another set of name resolution servers (NOT the ICANN hosted top level set)
How easy/difficult would it be?
I am making this proposal as part of a Proof Of Concept I am working on so I do not require actual code examples at this time.
Thanks in advance for any/all participation.

Solution #2: Integrate a content-control software for some user accounts
Written by alexduf2 the 7 Feb 11 at 22:32.
When managing users and groups, I think it should be possible to configure which user is able to access to the full internet, and which user is not.
Exactly in the same way that you chose who can configure printers, etc...

So you can make some accounts like :
Parents : administrator and full Internet Access protected by password
Kids : standard user with content-control software (proxy, DNS white-list... whatever) activated and impossible to deactivate.

loading wallpapers in gnome-appearance-properties is slow
Written by alexduf2 the 19 Sep 10 at 11:06. Related project: Gnome. New
When a user is going to change his wallpaper, he must :
- click on "system" -> "Appearance" (I guess, I'm running a french version of ubuntu)
- click on the "background tab"

and then wait for something to happen. Depending on the computer and the number of wallpaper, this can take to 1second, to 5/6 seconds.

I think we should notify the user that the wallpapers are loading.

Solution #1: A progress indicator, or an animated icon
Written by alexduf2 the 19 Sep 10 at 11:06.
The user must be informed that the computer is doing something.
A progressbar or something moving on the screen could be a good and cheap solution.

Solution #2: Show wallpapers one by one, as soon as they are loaded
Written by alexduf2 the 19 Sep 10 at 11:08.
as soon as a wallpaper is loaded, it should be added in the view.

But this could be a strange behaviour, especially on slow computers : the user start to click on a picture, that can potentially move before he notice.

Solution #3: Cache the thumbnails

Cache the thumbnails somewhere on the system, so the first load would be slow, but not the others.

Package managers take quite a lot of time to update package information.
Written by budhajeewa the 5 Sep 10 at 03:49. Global category: System. New
I really love the concept of repository based software management used in Linux, rather than the ā€œDownload the installer, double click, next, next, next, finishā€ method of Windows (I’ve never used MacOS!). But this repository based software management methods too has some points that disappoint me.

I love to test programs a lot, I usually use development releases of software than final releases. So, every time I have to update my OS’s repository information, the OS has to communicate with quite a *lot* of repositories and that takes hell of a long time to complete!

More to the problem, as I am using Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat Beta release these days, I update my OS at-least twice a day to make sure I have most recent and bug fixed software.

Imagine how’d it feel waiting about 5 minutes for the OS to update it’s repository information!

The problem is, all repository information are updated regardless of whether the repository had been changed since the last repository information update.

Solution #1: Mention last updated time with repositories
Written by budhajeewa the 5 Sep 10 at 03:49.
If repositories can tell OS the last time the repository was changed, OSs can choose whether information about that particular repository should be updated or not. That’ll save quite a hell of a time as OS then don’t have to update information about each repository!

Solution #3: Use Http header Last-Modified, and threaded downloads
Written by alexduf2 the 6 Sep 10 at 08:13.
Apt should use the Last-Modified attribute in the http header to know if the repository has changed. (if it's not the case)
it could be forced to update via some option of the command line.

Connections to the repositories should be done in parallel for each domain. (again, if it's not already the case)
i.e., if three repositories on lp.net, open only one connection for overload issues.
But if three repositories like, debian.org, lp.net, and opera.com, open three connections.

Solution #4: Real time update
Written by Lachu the 8 Sep 10 at 08:34.
Update information of packages in background, when list of packages are visible.

Why:
- We can have only one software management program running, so it's not necessary to update database before running
- Not all changes in repository causes to big change on list
- Software management program can be instructed to remove/add package from/to list in the fly

Looks at apt. Using apt-cache we don't need to update package information. It is necessary only on install command.

Additionally: hide packages provided by internet repositories if no internet connection present.

It would working in similar way as yum/PackageKit in Fedora. After clicking on some package, some backend connect to internet to get newest information about this package.

Also, if no interaction present, software manager would update other information, like getting information about new packages, removing deleted packages, etc.

Software management should also show information about list is updating. It should also tracker for conflicts, like user select package to install, but it's not accessible.

Solution #5: Use a file with a list of times files were updated.
Written by ctbeiser the 19 Sep 10 at 03:07.
Have the first file downloaded be a list of the times each package directory was updated, then have Ubuntu decide which ones to download based on that.

Solution #6: Update Package Information ONLY from the new repository added.
Written by openick the 30 Dec 11 at 12:57.
(This is in situations where a user adds a new repository and finds apt updating every repository)

When a new repository is added, the package manager should fetch package information ONLY from the newly added repository. This should make the package manager quicker when the task on hand is to install specific packages from a new repository (In such situations, complete update is not required)

Thank you.

Nautily context menu becomes ugly with long items

Some programs / plugins add items to nautilus context menu. If item text is long, then menu becomes very ugly

Solution #1: Autocut long items and animate sliding text when mouseover
Written by Vitaly the 1 Sep 10 at 22:44.
two steps:

1. Really long items should be cutted automatically

2. If item text is really significant (like in example), it should be automatically slided from left to right, when mouse over.

May be, this solution can be applied to other areas too. Don't know. My use-case is for "diff-ext" extention for meld. Use it often for development.

Add APT package defaults option in "Preffered Applications" Menu
Written by HX_Unbanned the 27 Aug 10 at 05:59. Related project: Gnome. New
Mainly, this idea was initiated by this blogs article:

http://www.webupd8.org/2010/01/new-apt-fast-version-now-with-full-full.html

Related bug report: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/apt/+bug/620274

So - after installing apt-fast package, next wish is to have it by default, BUT - It cannot be put that way ( at least from GUI ). So idea is to have such feature for users. Note that it would be another great difference from Windows operating system!

An Easier Way to Backup Files to Ubuntu One   forum
Written by Ellipsis the 28 Aug 10 at 12:09. Global category: Internet & Networking. New
I am a photographer and upload a lot of photos online. Both to Facebook and flickr. But these sites although great for sharing photos with the world are not ideal backup solutions.

I love Ubuntu One and try to utilize it as much as possible but frankly I am more than a little lazy. So I more often than not don't back up to U1.

The same can also be said about my document uploads to Zoho and class projects.

Solution #1: Copy to Ubuntu One on Upload
Written by Ellipsis the 28 Aug 10 at 12:09.
The idea here is whenever a user uploads a file Ubuntu should automatically copy it to the Ubuntu One folder. This would best be implemented through a browser extension.

Although the idea and basic implementation are simple there are issues that must be considered. These include size, bandwidth and privacy issues. As such the user may not want to copy every single thing they upload to Ubuntu One. But having a popup come up every time something is uploaded is intrusive and annoying.

These issues could be combated through:
-A strong settings framework
-Zeitgeist integration
-In browser dialogues (see the new "save your password/settings?" dialogues in Chrome/Firefox)

Solution #2: make a plugin for f-spot and other photo management

another way to reach the same goal, is to make some plugins in f-spot and other photos management programs to backup your photos.
Two or three clicks and you've saved your collection.

Wastebasket right click menu order
Written by almalaci the 26 Aug 10 at 19:23. Related project: Nautilus. New
Just a little "security" idea:
The "Delete Permanently" and
the "Restore" entries are next to each other in the Wastebasket right click menu. If you don't have the confirmation for "...Deleting files permanently" ticked in Wastebasket preferences (because like me you don't want it when you just empty your wastebasket), a little slip of the mouse can cause a lot of headache when you try to restore a file or folder but click Delete instead.

Solution #2: Do nothing
Written by alexduf2 the 28 Aug 10 at 14:19.
Separate theses two operations may be confusing for someone searching what to do with a file since the actions are sorted by category.

If a common user want to be sure of what he do, he will not deactivate the confirmation.

I think the best Idea is to make it possible to run programs in a tab of Nautulis! For example you run a tab in Nautilus and put firefox in it!

This is more accessible/productive then move the cursor down the screen every time!
