If we really want to make (K)Ubuntu for the layperson, than we need to be able to set up more than one user account during the installation.
Families won't like (K)Ubuntu if they can't make their own personal user accounts from the get-go.

ubuntu that would be good to also have a control panel where they are located all possible configurations and modifications to the system. A panel style YaST ( http://www.novell.com/products/opensuse/img/yast/sm/yast_hw.png ). People coming from other operating systems are accustomed to a control panel and ubuntu have not, and Do not think that should have?. would be nice to have it because they just would go to one place to resolve any errors. and also the people who come from another operating system would feel more comfortable.
sorry for my bad english

I think the title speaks for itself. Every time I open gedit, it will have the files I had opened before closing it. I really liked this feature in Notepad++. At least an option would be great (BTW, the options in gedit are remarkably few giving how frequent one uses it).
P.S. Add gedit in the "This Idea is related to:" list. I'm not the only one that has a suggestion for gedit (this could be a separate idea BTW)

Let applications specify what files can be safely deleted to save space

There are a lot of ideas being proposed for a 'system cleanup' tool, however making such a tool standalone would cause a few problems:
* Some rewriting would need to be done by each distro (files in different places and such)
* Only a limited number of cleanup operations could be done (eg. clean out APT downloads, empty Trash, etc.)
* A lot of potentialy removable things would need to be left since the cleanup app can't be certain they're not used
I propose that to get around this there should be a method to let applications specify which files they handle can be removed safely, which any system cleanup tool can take advantage of. This could work using a set of files, with a set for the system (probably in /var/cache) and a set per user (probably in ~/.cache). I did contemplate using DBus, but that would require every cleanable application to be running or to start whilst the cleanup takes place, which isn't good.
An example for APT might be stored in the file /var/cache/cleanable/apt and would look something like the following (could be XML):
owner /usr/share/applications/synaptic.desktop
section
priority low
description Finished-with software install files
command apt-get clean
endsection
section
priority medium
description Unused kernel software
command /usr/bin/removeoldkernels
endsection

Simple GUI to set up cellular modem (EVDO/Verizon, and others)

I have an EVDO type cellular modem that I can use to get on the internet via Verizon wireless service. As it turns out, my modem is a USB serial device that requires a ppp connection to be set up in order for it to work. The good news, however, is that no proprietary driver was necessary...thus there is nothing stopping Ubuntu from immediately recognizing this device and setting it up for me.
Figuring all this out by hand, took me 3 days. My mom would have never stood a chance! While doing my research I found many other with PC card cellular modems also struggling.
With all due respect to idea #4 (easy set up of any networking connection), I believe that issue needs particular attention as these devices are particularly troublesome and with prices dropping they are becoming ubiquitous.

Currently in Brainstorm if an idea is marked as "Done" or "Being Implemented" that status is not carried forth to the duplicate ideas.
This situation leaves dozens or hundreds of idea open for voting that should be closed. It's a waste of people's time and its confusing.

Gedit able to display binary files as hex

Sometimes when you have a unknown file, open it in a text editor can give you a hint. Even if the file is binary, you can found text in the header or somewhere.
Gedit should have the possibilities to open any kind of file. and if it's a binary file, display it in hex view with text view on a side column.
Plus, this is a good way to provide a hex editor by default without spreading the fear to new users with an additional program "WTF is that new sh*t in my application menu??"

We need to change the default screensaver. The problem with the current screensaver is that the first time you meet it is when the screen suddenly turns black during the installation. That is very confusing for most users, as the first thought always is that the installation has crashed.
I suggest a screensaver that helps brand Ubuntu, like for example the "Floating Ubuntu" screensaver. It could also be a textbased screensaver that could run on older machines witch doesn't support 3D.

Many dmesg and syslog errors should appear as notification balloons as well

For instance, if you plug in a USB device that is malfunctioning or not detected correctly, errors will be generated in the System Log, but nothing at all will happen in GNOME. Things like this should generate friendly graphical error balloons so that people at least recognize that something's gone wrong, instead of just thinking the device was not even recognized.
As braaivleis points out, it doesn't have to actually pop up the balloon; it can be like the updates icon that appears, but only shows a balloon when you click on it.

OpenOffice spellcheck should autodetect language used

OpenOffice is a pretty flexible office suite but it's annoying to me when I'm writing a document with multiple languages in it and I need to specify the language of each paragraph for the spellchecker. Fortunately this is easy to do (in the right-click context menu) but I would love it if OpenOffice could automatically detect what language it should use to spellcheck each paragraph.
One approach: if the spellchecker notices that a given paragraph has an unusual number of errors (say, more than 50% of the words are caught by the spellchecker), it can check its installed langauges lists to see if the sentence gets less errors in any other languages. If so, switch the style of that paragraph / section to spellcheck in that language.

There are so many "ideas" that are none.
You (brainstorm team) would have less work if there were a *button* at each idea page which easily let *us* mark the idea as 'not an idea', to be reviewed by you, and you can decide if it really is one or not and set the flag
Let us help a bit.

Currently if a wifi driver doesn't support wpa and only wep, only wep will be available. Instead I propose that we show wpa but have it grayed out then. This way it indicates that the wifi driver in use supports wep and not wpa.

I have installed Ubuntu on a number of friends' computers. I have also had an often complaint along the lines of "my sister clicked something and lost the 'buttons at the top.'"
It would be easy to show them how to click on an easy "reset to default" option on the right-click menu for the panel.

Update manager should always show last time it checked for updates

Right now Update manager only shows the last time it checked for updates when there are no new updates available, but IMO it should always show that because it is important information.
I don't want to download and install updates only to check for updates after that and find new updates for the same updated packages.
Since I can't see when was the last check I always click check before I install all the updates.
This idea is easy to implement and provides better usability.

Reporting tool for Kernel Panics

You know, I ran into a kernel panic coming out of suspend the other day using Ubuntu's kernel. The only other time I've had a kernel panic was when I was using my own compiled kernel for an Operating Systems class.
In any case, considering that kernel panics are a very bad, and they're very hard for an ordinary user to diagnose, there should be a tool (ex. a message in the notification area the next time the user logs in) that easily allows a user to report them.
