People around the globe that are using/concidering using Ubuntu are afraid that some of their hardware won't work for them. And some are frustrated to buy additional add-on cards to work around unsupportad onboard chips. All this could be avoided with a lookup in an ubuntu Hardware Database Website.

Some problematic hardware can be used with more or less work if helping information is available together with the hardware compatabillity data.

The hardware database can be found at http://hwdb.ubuntu.com/

From idea #47: The data should then be available in a format that is simple for users to browse on-line when considering new hardware.

Currently, pictures are organized like this:
Pictures/2008/07/01
Pictures/2008/07/05

Everyone organizes their large photo collections by full date because
1) this is how the pictures are taken (in events that typicaly fall on one date)
2) this is how typically other photo management programs group them (see Vista Photo Gallery, Picasa, etc.)
3) you need to be able to get at the folders from outside of the application. This is critical for backup/recovery, passing to friends, etc.
4) Having the folder marked as day only makes it not practical to add a description to the folder name

What I'm talking about is that on import, f-spot should by default create folders such
Pictures/2008-07-01
Pictures/2008-07-05
This is the best starting point, since 90% of the time, each album is separated by day. The date should be pulled in from exif data. I actually organize my albums by year, then date + description. For example,
Pictures/2008/2008-07-01 Birthday Party
Pictures/2008/2008-07-05 Camping
This should be configurable as everyone has their own preferences. Yes, even this format should be supported
Pictures/2008/07/01
Pictures/2008/07/05
but it should not be the default.

You should be able to edit the folder name from within F-Spot as well as from the file manager. F-Spot should be able to recognize the change and not loose any categorization for the affected photos.

Vista's Windows Photo Gallery does all this very well.

It will be nice if the stickers that come with the ubuntu CD/DVD are more wear resistantt, because the sticker taht I put in my laptop near the touch pad has been erased.
I think that could be like the Intel/AMD/NVIDIA/ATI/Winlogo sticker that comes with the laptop,
wear resistantt to rubbing and more profesional.
Maybe this stickers are more expensive, but wy put 4-6 sticker with 1 CD/DVD, i need only 1 all the time (maybe 2) and not for all the versions of the CD i request. Maybe a option in the shipping form if you want or no the stickers, because the second time I request a CD/DVD I don need more stickers because I already have it in my laptop.

Castellano:

here is a good one made up here by a print shop employee (Thanks to jsereno): http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=174194

At around one thousand four hundred people in it 24/7, #ubuntu may be the most populous irc channel in the history of mankind. It's so noisy I don't see how anyone ever gets help. Most of the time people just get scared and go to #ubuntu-offtopic or something (guilty)... Without extraneous join/part hiding in pidgin, I'd never even bother with it.

More problems come when you go to try to figure out how it should be split.
I propose #ubuntu and #ubuntu-x64 for a start, and all of you probably have better ideas. Put 'em here. Also, I'd like to know if others observe this to be as much of a problem as I do.

Ubuntu has the largest support community on earth, and as it continues to grow, it's going to need to adapt its community structure to that growth. The longer we wait, the more people in need of help we scare off.

I've been thinking... there is a lot of trouble with mp3, avi, wma, and all those multimedia formats. (I know legal issues) So, why not making EASIER and a smoother transition to free formats like Ogg. Ogg is actually BETTER than mp3.

Its about giving information, making easier things.
Example:

- When user tries to reproduce mp3 file:
offer 2 options, 1) convert to Ogg format and talk about advantages of this format, 2) download proprietary codecs

- Every media player should ask this to the user on first run and convert it too if needed.

This could be a solution with all the trouble with proprietary media files.

FEEL FREE TO SUGGEST ANY OTHER WAY TO GET TO THE SAME OBJECTIVE, USE FREE FORMATS.

[9] Duplicate report contest

Brainstorm has a problem: good ideas are lost among a huge amount of messy noise, including thousands of duplicates. I have just proposed duplicates for 5 of the 10 first "Most popular today", and I am pretty sure I missed some of them. One can check with "Random ideas" as well, it's not only a problem with recent ideas. Among the ~12000 official ideas in Brainstorm, how many are duplicates?

Some people would say that it does not matter because bad or duplicated ideas are lost among tons of other uninteresting ideas, and that's a useless effort to track them and remove them from the server. They remind me people who sweep the dust under the carpet, where nobody can see it, because they are too lazy to remove it properly. I agree that the Brainstorm tool is not completely convenient to do that, but you don't need a powerful vacuum cleaner to remove the dust. The problem is that it is still possible to keep Brainstorm clean, but it will be much more difficult to do so with 100000 ideas.

Only few of us seem to report duplicates, and that may be the problem. I have proposed duplicates for ideas with > 40 positive votes, which means that at least 40 people voted without checking if the idea has been already proposed. We are more than enough to tag all duplicates among the 12000 ideas, but we are not rewarded as "duplicate hunters". Why not adding a counter for the number of sucessfully reported duplicates in the dashboard, as well as a ranking, similar to the idea vote ranking? The point is just to add up a funny feature that can create a positive feedback --taking care of other's duplicates will automatically make people more aware of their own duplicates.

(apart from that, some of my duplicate proposals have probably vanished while the duplicate was obvious to me. In the opposite, quite a few non-related ideas have been tagged as duplicates. I sometimes have the feeling that Brainstorm admins don't want to spend any extra time dealing with duplicate matters, and make many mistakes in sorting among duplicate proposals. In my opinion, even if they don't really care, we should, because ideas proposed here can be of benefit to the whole free software community, and not only to Ubuntu).

[38] Let users test customised config files with new packages, choice to revert

I had this idea a while ago. When updates are installed or the system is upgraded there are sometimes unwanted side-effects where the user's customised settings and config files no longer work in the newer system. The user is asked if they want to replace customised files or not at upgrade time, but this doesn't allow any testing.

For example, say that a user has changed the /etc/network/interfaces file to get their connection running, and has edited /etc/X11/xorg.conf to get a tablet working. After updates to the packages which contain/control these files are made the user can be asked if their setup is still working (through the update manager originally, then as occasional popups until all questions are answered). If not then a list of potential solutions can be given (using the new config file, comparing the changes between old and new, etc. maybe even downgrading to the old package version).

I made a rather crude mockup of what I mean here http://bp0.blogger.com/_6BhjMzysLTs/RhcwYV86WOI/AAAAAAAAAAk/Pits9qYzRVY/s1600-h/UpgradeIssuesMockup.png

Some tests could be done automatically, but some cleverness would have to be employed to make sure non-networked computers aren't being thought of as broken, etc.

PS: The blueprint isn't entirely for this, but I commented in the full specification
