It is a good idea to power off USB Flash Drive (switch off drive light) after unmount.

DECENT GPL accounting program
Written by martinmartiini the 25 Jul 08 at 02:02. Category: Office. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Someone needs to start a serious GPL accounting suite.
I would consider a decent accounting program for linux as one of the MOST important things since accounting is a major implementation of computing.
It would give a major kick to linux adoption if there was a decent accounting program available.
It should be as user friendly as quickbooks, sage, SAP , allow modules to extend the usability, import/export capabilities compatible with all major accounting software etc.

Resolve the #ubuntu mess
Written by ethana2 the 24 Jul 08 at 20:05. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
At around one thousand four hundred people in it 24/7, #ubuntu may be the most populous irc channel in the history of mankind. It's so noisy I don't see how anyone ever gets help. Most of the time people just get scared and go to #ubuntu-offtopic or something (guilty)... Without extraneous join/part hiding in pidgin, I'd never even bother with it.

More problems come when you go to try to figure out how it should be split.
I propose #ubuntu and #ubuntu-x64 for a start, and all of you probably have better ideas. Put 'em here. Also, I'd like to know if others observe this to be as much of a problem as I do.

Ubuntu has the largest support community on earth, and as it continues to grow, it's going to need to adapt its community structure to that growth. The longer we wait, the more people in need of help we scare off.

Fix Suspend and Hibernate   forum

Suspend and hibernate still seems to be a big issue based on forum posts. Really focus on fixing it, even with proprietary drivers.

Addition of Programmer Dvorak Layout
Written by baluchi the 18 Jun 08 at 14:46. Category: Programming. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
The Programmer Dvorak keyboard layout is a modified Dvorak layout designed so programmers can type more efficiently.

Although not hard to add, this layout has been missing from the Ubuntu repositories.

Worldwide Conference to standardise Linux packaging
Written by Auzy the 26 May 08 at 04:45. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Lack of standardised linux packaging is letting down Developers, end users, network administrators, everyone, because there's no standard means of dealing with it, and developers don't want to waste their time to release 5 different packages to accommodate every package type.

The time has come to organise a world wide conference, to design a new standard that is common between distro's. I suggest using the following process to take action:

During Transition period:
- Current Packaging formats are still used
- Standard database for tracking installed packages (makes it possible for other package management systems to interact with the database of the current packaging system)
- means of tracking currently installed files from each package (so that uninstallation can be done through other programs).

By the End of Transition:
Have a packaging format (or a few standard ones) which are used amongst all distro's, that covers all the features required of the various packaging systems. At this point of time, RPM, DEB, ebuild's, etc should be depreciated!

This is really the last major problem that faces linux. With packaging standardised, developers can finally easily release their products for any distro, and a significant amount of time is saved by every distro "reinventing the wheel", and actually getting down to business.

Change icon of USB drives when ready to eject (automatically empty buffer)
Written by svergeylen the 1 Jul 08 at 08:15. Category: System. Related to: Gnome. New
When you use quite often USB key, you always have to unmount them correctly to keep your data safe. When you're copying a file on a USB key, you must wait to empty the copy buffer.

I would propose to link the USB key icon to the state of the transfer :
- If there's a transfer, we can see clearly that we can not take the USB key away.
- When transfer is finished and the buffer emptied, the icon can show that the USB key can be safely removed

and thus it's not yet useful to click on "unmount", because the unmount management is totally transparent, and treated by the system. We can simply pick the USB key away because transfer is already finish and correctly closed. This will be a great innovation to simplify unmount such usual disks.

edit : Maybe the icon can stay like the same, but w can add some little sub-icon to inform of the state.

Allow adjusting volume and brightness from login screen
Written by hunt.topher the 25 Jun 08 at 13:48. Category: Hardware support. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
On my Inspiron 1520 laptop, when the Ubuntu splash screen is present and the OS is loading, I can use the fn-keys to adjust the screen's brightness. However once the login window appears, these keys no longer control brightness until I'm fully logged in to my system. Similarly, I can't adjust the system volume until I've logged in, which can be disruptive if I am in a library and need to log in, and I don't have any way of muting the volume short of logging into a failsafe (silent) terminal session to mute from command line.

I would love it if you could just use your laptop's fn keys to adjust brightness and volume from the login window.

Add extra GIMP plugins pack to the repository
Written by mihai007 the 24 Apr 08 at 10:03. Category: Graphics. Related to: Nothing/Others. Not an idea
I just found some very very useful plugins for gimp at http://registry.gimp.org
It would be nice to have an entry in synaptic to install extra plugins for GIMP from there and not only!
This way we could benefit from all new features being developed by the community.

Terminal Copy and Paste
Written by Auslegung the 29 Feb 08 at 21:21. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Allow the usage of the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + v to paste items into the Terminal. I know many of us copy commands from websites (mostly ubuntu forums for me) and paste them into the Terminal, and keyboard shortcuts are a preferred way to do it.

Stickers more resistant
Written by nsanz the 9 Jul 08 at 17:42. Category: Marketing. Related to: ubuntu.com. New
It will be nice if the stickers that come with the ubuntu CD/DVD are more wear resistantt, because the sticker taht I put in my laptop near the touch pad has been erased.
I think that could be like the Intel/AMD/NVIDIA/ATI/Winlogo sticker that comes with the laptop,
wear resistantt to rubbing and more profesional.
Maybe this stickers are more expensive, but wy put 4-6 sticker with 1 CD/DVD, i need only 1 all the time (maybe 2) and not for all the versions of the CD i request. Maybe a option in the shipping form if you want or no the stickers, because the second time I request a CD/DVD I don need more stickers because I already have it in my laptop.

Castellano:

Use SSL for User Logins on Brainstorm and UbuntuForums Sites   forum
Written by gmendoza the 7 Jul 08 at 02:35. Category: Security. Related to: ubuntuforums.org. New
I would appreciate it if both the brainstorm and ubuntuforums.org would be protected via SSL for login and cookie exchanges.

Virtually all other sites related to the wiki, documentation, launchpad, etc, use SSL, and I wish the same could be said about these as well.

In a recent forum discussion, some felt that there's no point to protecting those sites. But most will agree that many people use the same password for everything, and even though a compromise of a forum password may not seem like much, it could be an issue elsewhere.

Case in point, all wiki modifications show the IP address of those that make the changes. If this person uses the same password for the wiki as their forum account, not only is it a risk to the wiki, but if their personal machine is remotely accessible via SSH, etc, then that user is also at risk if the password is also the same on their computer.

Yes... people need to follow best practices... but if you have the ability to help people and it comes at virtually no cost to you, then why not?

Hope others feel the same way. Thanks for listening.

Disabling unneeded services
Written by sayakb the 9 Jul 08 at 12:33. Category: Hardware support. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Can it be done that the services have a partial sleep mode. ie. for example, bluetooth services will stay disabled until a bluetooth device is actually plugged in. Many desktop users do not have bluetooth and the service has to be manually disabled in some cases..

One password manager fits all
Written by elias1884 the 9 Jul 08 at 11:38. Category: Security. Related to: Gnome. New
I have some passwords stored in firefox, some in gnome wallet, others in kde wallet and so on and so forth. Does not make much sense to me. I want one general password manager that firefox, evolution, thunderbird, pidgin, gnome and kde hook up to!

Probably there should be one password manager backend and an API to it. KDE and GNOME then would provide a GUI for it and all other apps use the daemon through the general API.

Better support for External Hard Drives
Written by jorgevan007 the 8 Jul 08 at 16:58. Category: Hardware support. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Many external hard drives still need to be manually mounted.
Ubuntu needs stronger plug and play support for external hard drives, eSATA, Firewire and USB 2.0.
The hardware website: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardwareSupport/
also needs to add a section for ubuntu supported hard drives.

My Ubuntu
Written by lummie the 7 Jul 08 at 14:14. Category: Installation. Related to: Synaptic package manager. New
One of the great things I like about Ubuntu (and other linux distros) which astounded me after using windows is the benefits of storing the user's settings in their home folder.

I have always kept my /home partition separate from the root partition (which I think the Ubuntu partition setup should do as default) so when you re-install ubuntu, all your settings are restored, color-scheme, wallpaper, etc.

After installation, as you re-install the applications you used to have each app picks up it's previous settings with no hassle.

However, although all the settings are still stored, you still have to go through all the applications you had installed previously and re-install them from the package manager.

"My Ubuntu", would be a little application that you run and it would present you with a list of the applications you have installed at the present time. This would not be at the lib or version level, but be at the application name e.g. Gimp, Cheese, i.e. the identifier that would be put in the main menu.

From this list you can de-select any apps you are not interested in and then click a save button, which writes the list to a file in your home folder.

After doing a re-install you then simply have to install "My Ubuntu" (it would be nice if it was installed as default eventually), select the previously saved apps list file and it will then go through and ensure all the apps on the list are installed.
