Fix Suspend and Hibernate   forum

Suspend and hibernate still seems to be a big issue based on forum posts. Really focus on fixing it, even with proprietary drivers.

Make a guest account that people can login to, and check mail, surf web.

Every time the guest account logs out, its purged so next user who login is a clean fresh account.

Mac OS X has this;

People around the globe that are using/concidering using Ubuntu are afraid that some of their hardware won't work for them. And some are frustrated to buy additional add-on cards to work around unsupportad onboard chips. All this could be avoided with a lookup in an ubuntu Hardware Database Website.

Some problematic hardware can be used with more or less work if helping information is available together with the hardware compatabillity data.

The hardware database can be found at http://hwdb.ubuntu.com/

From idea #47: The data should then be available in a format that is simple for users to browse on-line when considering new hardware.

Stickers more resistant
Written by nsanz the 9 Jul 08 at 17:42. Category: Marketing. Related to: ubuntu.com. New
It will be nice if the stickers that come with the ubuntu CD/DVD are more wear resistantt, because the sticker taht I put in my laptop near the touch pad has been erased.
I think that could be like the Intel/AMD/NVIDIA/ATI/Winlogo sticker that comes with the laptop,
wear resistantt to rubbing and more profesional.
Maybe this stickers are more expensive, but wy put 4-6 sticker with 1 CD/DVD, i need only 1 all the time (maybe 2) and not for all the versions of the CD i request. Maybe a option in the shipping form if you want or no the stickers, because the second time I request a CD/DVD I don need more stickers because I already have it in my laptop.

Castellano:

Resolve the #ubuntu mess
Written by ethana2 the 24 Jul 08 at 20:05. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
At around one thousand four hundred people in it 24/7, #ubuntu may be the most populous irc channel in the history of mankind. It's so noisy I don't see how anyone ever gets help. Most of the time people just get scared and go to #ubuntu-offtopic or something (guilty)... Without extraneous join/part hiding in pidgin, I'd never even bother with it.

More problems come when you go to try to figure out how it should be split.
I propose #ubuntu and #ubuntu-x64 for a start, and all of you probably have better ideas. Put 'em here. Also, I'd like to know if others observe this to be as much of a problem as I do.

Ubuntu has the largest support community on earth, and as it continues to grow, it's going to need to adapt its community structure to that growth. The longer we wait, the more people in need of help we scare off.

Gimp needs a glossy touch
Written by dragoninsane the 22 Jun 08 at 20:04. Category: Graphics. Related to: GIMP Image Editor. New
well so many of people suggested about gimp not use 3 windows.actually i and many i suppose(noobs) get scared when they see 3 windows all around desktop when they open Gimp(although there is a non official port called gimpshop but its outdated and not as good as gimp).
PS(photoshop) is setting web standards great piece of work but gimp too can compete with it.some needed changes:
*****single window.
****compatibility with photoshop filters .8bf filters, more support
****better documentation
**better icons and UI redesign(although i just saw feature planned for gimp next version 2.6) still deserves attention of developers.
**better support for pre defined key in photoshop also can be used in gimp
key combinations(keyboard shortcuts like ctrl+alt etc)
i am huge fan of photo editing software and web design somehow...usability in some software breaks barriers of commercial and free software.

Encourage Users to work with Free Sotfware Formats
Written by retj the 5 Aug 08 at 17:28. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I've been thinking... there is a lot of trouble with mp3, avi, wma, and all those multimedia formats. (I know legal issues) So, why not making EASIER and a smoother transition to free formats like Ogg. Ogg is actually BETTER than mp3.

Its about giving information, making easier things.
Example:

- When user tries to reproduce mp3 file:
offer 2 options, 1) convert to Ogg format and talk about advantages of this format, 2) download proprietary codecs

- Every media player should ask this to the user on first run and convert it too if needed.

This could be a solution with all the trouble with proprietary media files.

FEEL FREE TO SUGGEST ANY OTHER WAY TO GET TO THE SAME OBJECTIVE, USE FREE FORMATS.

Rhythmbox does not allow editing of tags of WMA or AAC files. So that I can edit the tags of these files, I need to run a Windows program in Ubuntu.

Make Ubuntu perfect and run on all computer
Written by yekcim the 26 Apr 08 at 18:59. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
The title is an example of idea i think Brainstorm have to hide : Some ideas are too logical.

Examples :
- Add software 2.0 and not software 1.9
- Support acpi
- Speed Up boot time
- Better wi-fi support
- ...

In fact, these ideas are good ideas and everyone will vote for. But little ideas but good ideas are hidden because can't obtain same scores.

We can vote "for" or "against" an idea. We could clic on a "too logical" button and if "too logical" have a important score we hide this ideas. A visitor could watch all ideas, but by defaut done and "too logical" should be hides.

Duplicate report contest
Written by Arnaudus the 11 Aug 08 at 18:39. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Brainstorm has a problem: good ideas are lost among a huge amount of messy noise, including thousands of duplicates. I have just proposed duplicates for 5 of the 10 first "Most popular today", and I am pretty sure I missed some of them. One can check with "Random ideas" as well, it's not only a problem with recent ideas. Among the ~12000 official ideas in Brainstorm, how many are duplicates?

Some people would say that it does not matter because bad or duplicated ideas are lost among tons of other uninteresting ideas, and that's a useless effort to track them and remove them from the server. They remind me people who sweep the dust under the carpet, where nobody can see it, because they are too lazy to remove it properly. I agree that the Brainstorm tool is not completely convenient to do that, but you don't need a powerful vacuum cleaner to remove the dust. The problem is that it is still possible to keep Brainstorm clean, but it will be much more difficult to do so with 100000 ideas.

Only few of us seem to report duplicates, and that may be the problem. I have proposed duplicates for ideas with > 40 positive votes, which means that at least 40 people voted without checking if the idea has been already proposed. We are more than enough to tag all duplicates among the 12000 ideas, but we are not rewarded as "duplicate hunters". Why not adding a counter for the number of sucessfully reported duplicates in the dashboard, as well as a ranking, similar to the idea vote ranking? The point is just to add up a funny feature that can create a positive feedback --taking care of other's duplicates will automatically make people more aware of their own duplicates.

(apart from that, some of my duplicate proposals have probably vanished while the duplicate was obvious to me. In the opposite, quite a few non-related ideas have been tagged as duplicates. I sometimes have the feeling that Brainstorm admins don't want to spend any extra time dealing with duplicate matters, and make many mistakes in sorting among duplicate proposals. In my opinion, even if they don't really care, we should, because ideas proposed here can be of benefit to the whole free software community, and not only to Ubuntu).

Let users test customised config files with new packages, choice to revert
No information about this blueprint
Information is updated every 5 minutes.
Please wait till the next update.
spec
Written by Warbo the 11 Aug 08 at 03:10. Category: System. Related to: Update manager. New
I had this idea a while ago. When updates are installed or the system is upgraded there are sometimes unwanted side-effects where the user's customised settings and config files no longer work in the newer system. The user is asked if they want to replace customised files or not at upgrade time, but this doesn't allow any testing.

For example, say that a user has changed the /etc/network/interfaces file to get their connection running, and has edited /etc/X11/xorg.conf to get a tablet working. After updates to the packages which contain/control these files are made the user can be asked if their setup is still working (through the update manager originally, then as occasional popups until all questions are answered). If not then a list of potential solutions can be given (using the new config file, comparing the changes between old and new, etc. maybe even downgrading to the old package version).

I made a rather crude mockup of what I mean here http://bp0.blogger.com/_6BhjMzysLTs/RhcwYV86WOI/AAAAAAAAAAk/Pits9qYzRVY/s1600-h /UpgradeIssuesMockup.png

Some tests could be done automatically, but some cleverness would have to be employed to make sure non-networked computers aren't being thought of as broken, etc.

PS: The blueprint isn't entirely for this, but I commented in the full specification

Give file-size in firefox upload window
Written by kramer65 the 11 Aug 08 at 10:50. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Firefox. New
When I upload photos I often have one small and one large version of the photo. To see which one was the small one I always need to go back in nautilus to see what the size of the files was.

If we have the file/image-size in the upload window I can see it immediately. This makes using it again a little bit more intuitive.

choose the new theme of Ubuntu by Brainstorm.
Written by nq6 the 2 Jul 08 at 16:35. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. New

The Ubutnu is a popular distribution, and the choice of their standard theme should be made by all by voting. And not by a small group. The community can elect the theme through the Ubuntu Brainstorm.

For the choice of a new theme that is the satisfaction of the majority that idea is essential.

---------------------
Edited:
Initially thank you all. This idea may help it to developers in the choice, and can have an extra theme.

Can serve as a basis for changes in the theme chosen by the team of Ubuntu, even if the popular themes are not adopted.

This idea will help.

add a separate button to the System menu to open the Control center.

As the Control center bundles many options in the preferences it would make sense to move it out of the preferences menu.

in my feisty setup I have the Remote Desktop preferences but I could not figure out how to connect to my mums xubuntu gutsy installation. Has xubuntu even a remote desktop thin included? I could not find settings for it. I tried to install freeNX but somehow I failed miserably.

I would like to see a Remote Desktop/VNC solution with uses little bandwidth and works the same/in similar way in all ubuntu derivates

Optimize OpenOffice.org Default Settings   forum
Written by balleyne the 5 Mar 08 at 19:38. Category: Office. Related to: Nothing/Others. Won't implement
OpenOffice.org is quite sluggish with its default settings. Every time I install Ubuntu, one of the first things I do is change the OpenOffice.org settings.

I usually change the settings as follows:
MEMORY - 30 steps, 128MB, 20 objects, 20MB per object
JAVA - Do not use Java
VIEW - Open GL, optimized output, dithering, refresh during interaction and hardware acceleration all ticked.

Without the View settings changed, running old powerpoint presentations in slideshow mode literally brings a dual core processor to a halt.

I'm not sure that the default settings should be exactly as described above because I'm not sure what ramifications that might have for other computers, but it seems to be that there is a lot of room for improvement in performance.

Developer comments
Changing the memory settings would increase the minimum memory needed to
run OpenOffice.org by quite a bit, which would not be good for lower end
machines. OpenOffice.org uses Java for most functionality not deemed
'core functionality' so by disabling Java many parts of OpenOffice.org
would not work. Also, changing the view settings leads to problems with
older systems and video cards that have buggy drivers.

The fact that some PowerPoint presentations take large amounts of cpu
power without the view settings changed is probably a bug. Also, the
poster on Ubuntu Forums that had mentioned using those settings
corrected his problems later mentioned that the changes didn't actually
help on all documents. So there are probably some bugs that still need
to be corrected in OpenOffice.org regarding these issues. If you see
issues like that it would be very useful to report them on Launchpad and
include a sample document exhibiting the problem.

Addition of Programmer Dvorak Layout

The Programmer Dvorak keyboard layout is a modified Dvorak layout designed so programmers can type more efficiently.

Although not hard to add, this layout has been missing from the Ubuntu repositories.
