Option To Delete Your Own Bad Brainstorm Ideas

Because sometimes things don't sound like nearly as good an idea when you've thought on it a while. :-)

Treat archives like regular folders
Written by JJRabbit the 3 Mar 08 at 15:33. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Archives are opening in applications like File Roller. Why? When you thing about you realize that archive is nothing less than special type of folder (and folder is special type of file with defined structure dependent on filesystem). But archives can be presented as compressed folders and opens in same windows as regular folders. Why do we need to confuse user with different windows?

Working with archives will be easy as in Midnight Commander or in Total Commander or in Windows XP. And if it will be implemented like VFS (zip://path/archive.zip/subdirectory/file) or as kernel driver it will be easier due to be transparent to any application.

Update: If gvfs is not possible, mounting the archive could be another possible way to implement this.

Archive managers should be used only for creating archives with non common attributes, e.g. encrypted, splitted to multiple volumes (to fit DVD, CD, ZIP drive, Floppy)...

Note: When you try to drag big file out from the archive from File Roller you need to wait to fully uncompress file before releasing mouse button (once it started to uncompress it). It's bad and very annoying.

Open a terminal window through Nautilus
Written by Virus the 3 Mar 08 at 16:47. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. Won't implement
Sometimes it's unconfortable when you're searching some files (for example when compiling and installing a program) and when you are "inside" the folder in the file manager, you want to compile. You need the terminal.

So, you need to reach the folder and reach that folder typing all the way to do it, and it's very tedious when the program name is too long.

I suggest that in the menu (File menu) it would appear an item called "Open Terminal in this folder" or simply "Open terminal".

Developer comments
This used to be available by default in GNOME but it was a conscious design decision to remove it by default. There are no plans to implement this by default in Ubuntu.

Better wi-fi support
Written by neilneil2000 the 29 Feb 08 at 00:20. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
More support for more wireless chipsets out of the box and "Windows style" ease of set up.

I have spent may a day trying to configure wireless cards on Ubuntu, often without much luck!

Please also deliver more support for what they are both wireless PCI cards and USB, as it is currently very low base of drivers for such devices

Viewports
Written by jhol the 1 Mar 08 at 03:36. Category: Graphics. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Add viewports (as in FVWM), i.e. the desktop (virtual screen) could be bigger than (physical) screen and it would scroll with mouse.

On UMPC's this could be very useful.

The Killer App

What Linux needs more than anything else is a C++ IDE similar to Microsoft Visual Studio 6. Everything else will automatically follow.

Debian recognition day
Written by Veejay the 28 Feb 08 at 15:05. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Organize a web-based Debian Recognition/Appreciation Day every year. Doesn't have to be anything formal, but the Debian maintainers are a key factor to the huge success Ubuntu is experiencing these days and they deserve the props.

The choice between single or double-click, currently

In Nautilus I can choose Single Click, but this only a feature of Nautilus.
In the GNOME dialogs Open file, Save file, etc, I must do two clicks!
(In Windows the Single Click is for all system).

Dedicated to Windows users to Ubuntu migration.
Written by chispachips the 28 Feb 08 at 19:52. Category: Installation. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
When a Windows user migrate to Ubuntu system (I remember my first time) he try to fetch all popular things in Ubuntu like an interactive messenger and a program more avanced than aMule, like Ares from Windows. We could to advance this integration's aspect because lot of persons only use a computer to chat and search archives in fast and big P2P servers, if Ubuntu don't possess it people go back. Now, we can connect to Ares database from other P2P programs from Ubuntu, but achieve this objective is too difficult for a noob habited in Windows, because it's necesary modifying text lines to add Ares serverlist, installing and using difficult P2P programs, lot of words aren't in the corresponding language (I'm spanish and I find lot of words who are in English in lot of programs), etc...

My suggestion is: to add the most corresponding popular Windows programs on Ubuntu to Live CD and Ubuntu installation with anymore user edition, because actually, only the strongest users or users with a big domination in computers can survive in Linux systems; so, I want all people use it ;) . Thank you.

File manager for ftp, scp.. transfers
Written by ruyman the 28 Feb 08 at 20:06. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
It would be great to have an integrated GUI file manager for all protocols, which supports:

-Queues of files/directories
-stop/pause/resume actions
-Bookmarks for storing urls, logins, passwords, etc..
-All that useful features included in programs like cuteftp.

better music player
Written by grashdur the 28 Feb 08 at 20:08. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
A better music player would be great. I currently use Amarok for my music, but I find it to be too complex and bureaucratic for my own tastes. I use Rhythmbox for listening to podcasts only -- though it has improved, it doesn't support AAC format, nor can it handle large music libraries (a couple thousand songs) without frequent errors and crashes. Rhythmbox has a great interface, but is a little weak on features. VLC is nice for watching DVDs (better than the default program) but isn't as user-friendly as I'd like.

Promote the use of gnome-main-menu (a.k.a. Slab) by default
Written by ricardo the 28 Feb 08 at 20:16. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Slab is a replacement for the Applications-Places-System menu for the GNOME desktop. It puts all (the menus, options, applications, preferences and so) behind a unique button ("Computer"). OpenSUSE uses it by default, and I believe Fedora too.

There's a blueprint about that which was accepted for Feisty, but it was never be implemented.

To try it, install the gnome-main-menu package and add the applet in a GNOME panel.

there should be a shortcut to my documents on your windows drive on the ubuntu desktop or in the home folder. This could all be done through options on the live cd.

if people have spent a lot of time using windows they will have a lot of stuff in their my documents folder. people are not going to want to copy this across (or they cant due to space limitations)
so lets give them easy access to their old data with symlinks (which can of course be instantly deleted if the user wishes).

i would go futher and say symlink to their old my music folder either as a replacement for Music in ubuntu or probably (as ubuntu developers would prefer) inside the music folder (ie ~/Music/Windows Music or something). the same for pictures and videos .... or anything else that windows has now. Then when they open rhythmbox, the new music and the old music are both there, same in fspot. seamless migration.

[ i would preferable choose symlinking ~/Music itself etc. automatically to the windows equivalent, so that people can switch between windows and linux and have their files follow them. New files put in music folder in linux are easily available in windows. but that is just me ]

Perhaps someone can come up with a better idea.

the ubuntuforums thread show that people want one home folder, although the way attempted in the thread is the wrong way
check out the blueprint (not made by me)

Gnome KDE and XFCE, all in one Ubuntu
Written by Herman Schmidt the 28 Feb 08 at 20:19. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
We all know that Ubuntu uses Gnome. But it doesn't avoid that KDE and XFCE come already installed in the operating system.

Whenever I install KDE libraries in Ubuntu, many files appear in the menu "Applications/Others", and is very annoying.

Besides, this would make easier the operating system to people who never used linux in their lives, because they don't know about different systems and desktops, they just want to Click n' install.

Well, i Hope this is useful for you, and all votes for this idea. :)

MC is easier to use for novice users than vi or pico/nano if during the installation process the user is strands in textmode. MC is a powerful editor and filemanager that is still easy to use.

Make Ubuntu more compatible to Deiban
Written by Nanotron the 28 Feb 08 at 20:26. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Every time I here that Ubuntu is not very compatible to Debian. I think the technologies in Ubuntu are good, not all but the mos. (Upstart is a good Idear)
But this programs or technologies are optimised to Ubuntu.
I think they must be developed so taht it is easy to port them on other Linux Distributions.
And the Ubuntu packages must be compatible to Debian packages.
