Hi!

I'm a big fan of Images like .iso.
But it is not very easy to mount this Images.
I think there must be a Tool in Nautilus and Dolphin wich alows mounting Images with a double Click. (This feature exists int MacOS). Or with a right click on the file and then there must be a poit "Mount Image". I thick that would be a very use full Tool for every one.
A good example for this is CDemu.

I know there are some ohter good programs, but I think that would be the easyest way and very confortible.

Make "About Me" Useful
Written by daengbo the 1 Nov 08 at 03:47. Category: Usability. Related to: Gnome. New
If you take a trip to System > Preferences > About Me, you'll notice a place for all your personal information:

* A picture
* E-mail addresses
* Instant messaging accounts
* Physical addresses
* Web page
* Blog
* Calendar
* Professional information
* Password

It's probably completely empty. You've probably never visited there before. Why would you? It's not used for anything ....

About Me represents a great unused resource for the Gnome desktop. Evolution could access this information, setting up e-mail accounts for you as automatically as possible and supplying your calendar without extra work on your part. Pidgin/Empathy could use it to seed the initial accounts. Your picture could be set as an avatar if you like. More esoterically, gnome-blog could use this information and Nautilus could try to set up an FTP connection to your web page for upload.

Why isn't About Me used for anything? Security. Developers are correctly concerned that making About Me central to your personality will create a situation where rogue applications could use this information to exploit you or your accounts.

Why don't we store the information in Seahorse (it handles passwords and keyrings)? On Gnome first run, you could be asked for this personal information to populate About Me. Applications which want it will need to be authorized by the user in order to access Seahorse. Ekiga obviously needs this information. The game you downloaded doesn't. End of story? Am I missing something? Probably.

Animated PNG support for Nautilus
Written by Ape the 25 Oct 08 at 16:13. Category: Graphics. Related to: Nautilus. Needs clarification
PNG supports animations with APNG-extension. Animated PNGs are fully supported by programs like Firefox. Nautilus and other main applications should also support these.

Example animated PNG images:

Thumbnailer should extract icons from exe files and let nautilus and other programs use them as a preview image.

Make nano the default text editor for all terminal apps
Written by YokoZar the 4 Mar 08 at 12:01. Category: Server. Related to: Nothing/Others. Already implemented
A lot of terminal apps make use of the EDITOR= environment variable, however we don't define one in our default bash profile. For instace, when I had to use mutt for the first time to check email using a shell account, I tried to write a reply only to be dumped into a vi instance.

vi is a great text editor, however if you've never used it before it is incredibly difficult. It's not even obvious how to quit or get help without opening up a man page in another terminal. For those who prefer it, setting the EDITOR= line is a fairly simple task. As a reasonable default, however, nano is the way to go.

Developer comments
nano is the default editor in ubuntu.

Add Wine's Tahoma to the set of default fonts
Written by Nxx the 5 Jul 08 at 17:21. Category: System. Related to: Wine. New
I think adding Tahoma from Wine package (it's free software) to the set of default fonts may significantly improve view of some web pages and opening MS Office documents.

Usability: Have separate login and password fields on startup.
Written by pengo the 5 Aug 08 at 22:32. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Fix the login screen so that the username and password appear on separate lines -- instead of both appearing in the same place.

Fixing this would mean users get less confused and the interface would be more intuitive.

The current configuration (having the password field appear where the username field was a second ago) has been shown to confuse new users. It was in a study I read in lwn.net years ago and assumed someone would pay attention to it. No one has. That makes me sad. :(

Make Wine 1.0 available in Hardy (through hardy-updates). This makes it easier for some companies who depend on XP software (which already works well in wine) to make the transition to Ubuntu.

IMHO it would be nice to release wine 1.0 through hardy-updates so everyone who hasn't disabled hardy-updates will get it. The wine 1.0 branch will probably continue to receive important updates making it easier for Ubuntu to maintain.

According to Eric S. Raymond's "World Domination 201" Wine is very important for Linux to become successful on the desktop.

Why wine is so important :
http://www.winehq.org/site/why
http://catb.org/~esr/writings/world-domination/world-domination-201.html

Wine 1.0 will release on june 6th. Hardy will release on june 5th. This makes it impossible to include wine 1.0 in Hardy except through hardy-backports or hardy-updates.

More information :
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardyReleaseSchedule
http://wiki.winehq.org/WineReleasePlan

Developer comments
Wine 1.0 is released for Gutsy and Hardy through backports.
It will be available via update too soon on Hardy.

Add the word 'Ubuntu' to the dictionary, with its definition.
Also add this word to the spelling checker's list for OpenOffice.org and Firefox.

Update Pidgin in the repositories - fix ICQ bug
Written by PiHalbe the 2 Jul 08 at 09:28. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Pidgin Internet Messenger. Implemented
Pidgin Version 2.4.3 has been released 2008-07-01, the repositories still host 2.4.1. The current version fixes a serious problem that prevents ICQ from connecting since 2008-06-30.

I bet a lot of users are off-line right now, it is urgent to fix this as soon as possible.

Developer comments
The updated version of Pidgin that works with ICQ is now available via the update manager.
