Compiz off by default until it is stable

Compiz currently has issues with the screen resolution selector and other apps, that could frustrate newbies.
I think, since the default config should be the noob-friendly one, compiz should be off on default until the weird behaviour is resolved (at least on those graphics cards, that make it behave weird).

Do not set the Ubuntu CD-ROM as a Default Repository for the Synaptic

I found it very frustrating when I first got into Ubuntu, and was looking around at the Packages to install, that I had to have the installation CD in my computer. Especially since it was a laptop and I didn't have my CD Drive in.
I eventually found out how to remove it as a repository source.
It should not be set as default, or perhaps, if it isn't there, Synaptic should go and look on the internet. Which it doesn't.

Cinepaint is a great program, it was even used in some popular "hollywood" movies! But it is not available in ubuntu at the moment... would be nice if it were added to the repositories...
[edit] I even tried to compile it... but I'm no expert, and even folowing the instructions to compile software it gave me a bunch of errors and didin't worked out...

Add Rubber Band to the repositories

For old Mac and Windows converts who are familiar with Antares Autotune, rubberband is a library that allows us Linux users to write applications that do the same thing.
Rubber Band is an audio time-stretching and pitch-shifting library and utility program. There are Audacity plugins that take advantage of the library and I'm working on an independent application that allows you to do pitch correction on vocal tracks. This is an area where Linux sorely lacks options. Rubber Band is licensed under the GPL.

I couldn't believe it today that you can't edit/open a .theme, .desktop, or .config file.
Just create an empty file and name it with any word and one of the upper suffix; doubleclick on it and GNOME will tell you that it is "no directory". Funny.
I file that here because I don't think it's a bug, it's a lack of a feature: open these files with a nautilus servicemenu "Edit..."

Make Drag&Drop possible everywhere in GNOME

Drag&Drop is such a intuitive and simple action - it must be promoted.
There are many things that already work in Ubuntu/GNOME/KDE with Drag&Drop, but there is much that can be improved:
- DnD an image from Firefox to the Desktop should place that image there, not a textfile with the link to the homepage.
- DnD from the icon on the left side of the URL in the Firefox address bar to the desktop should create a .desktop file with a link to that URL.
- DnD of devices onto the Pastebin should unmount them (like OSX)
- DnD of a Desktop file into a mainmenu/submenu of GNOME should create a menu item.
- fix the Nautilus-in-list-view-doesn't-accept-DnD-files issue: Launchpad bug #61237
- DnD file from anywhere (e.g. Desktop) to a folder in the "file open" "file save" dialogs.
- DnD a file into an edit box should insert a file:// link - KDE has this; Idea #3027
from Idea #4105:
- DnD Attachement from Thunderbird to Nautilus
- DnD Files From File-Roller to Nautilus
- DnD Picture from Nautilus to OOo
...and many more, please submit your ideas, I'll put them into the description!

Promote development of modern benchmarking program
|

We have dozens of ancient benchmarks, which mainly test I/O operations, or basic tasks. Or your typical Quake 3 ones.
We really should somehow promote development (maybe as a bounty) for a new benchmark (or benchmark framework) that can push modern hardware (similar to 3Dmark). Whilst it may not seem important, many computer guys use 3Dmark normally as a way to test their overclocking, and compare to other people.
If we design it in a modular fashion, as a framework, where every test is a plugin, the community will help making good plugins. Surely a framework would not take much effort to code.
After we have a proper framework, you could expect members of the community to code:
- I/O tests
- Shader tests
- OpenGL tests
- Even directX tests on windows (we have the advantage though of being able to plugin to winelib too to benchmark wine).
Its a project with a little time needed at the beginning, but it will take on a life of its own. And, since we are in total control, it will give us the ability to accurately test our performance with other OS's, to work out what we can improve (or where we pwn them).
Current benchmarks like 3Dmark are coded in Directx, so are unlikely to be ported to other platforms, and we have the advantage of having a modular system.
In the future, we could use it to test for default installed programs. ie, test automatically if the system is good enough for compwiz. and enable if it runs it well, allow users to only list games for install they can run well, etc.

add a package identifier to widgets, for tranlator to locate package

i am a team member of the simplified chinese translation team.
when using alpha/beta version of Ubuntu, we came across frequently the dialogues/wigdets that show improper/wrong translations, the error is not easy to distinguish when using launchpad.net to do the translation work. But in a context, the error is very eye-catching.
but one big problem/annoyance is that: even if i find there is something not proper in the widget/dialogue, it is usually difficult to lock down the *real/unique* package that contains the message. we often see packages with similar opening letters that prevent us from determining the ultimate source of the package.
so i strong suggest that the developers should add a "Identifier" of the "Ultimate package" that generate the message to the widget somewhere[see my attachment 1], so that it can helps the translators worldwide a lot. The identifier should be identical to the launchpad.net package name[see my attachment 2].

It is not that we translators are lazy. it is that we need speed up our process by using technical automation available. Thus we can also improve the quality of the translaton greatly and quickly. It will benefit all the translators available.
thanks for your attention.

Text Mode Runlevel

Give Ubuntu a text console runlevel like init 3 on Red Hat. As a power user I don't always want to boot into X, especially when I'm tinkering with my X configuration.
Also. the way things are setup now makes an invalid X config render the system unbootable in normal mode (when booting to init 2). It gets stuck in an infinite loop of trying to start X and failing. It should try to start X a few times and then drop me to a console.

UnionFS Graphical Config tool

UnionFS has applications out side of the live CD environment, but they never get realized or implement because UnionFS is just so cryptic and the documentation is hard to find, and not definitive.
If we had a graphical tool, or even a set of easy to use scripts for common functions, to to set up and manage unionFS overlays that would go a long way towards helping average users get practical use out of UnionFS.
The two big UnionFS use cases that stand out in my mind are using Union to create versioning file systems, and merging media collections that span multiple partitions/physical drives.

Preserve Live Session Changes Post-Install

When I install Ubuntu, I load the LiveCD, go through the installer, and while its installing, I start customizing. I propose an option that will ask the user (post-install) if they would like to preserve the changes they made to the Live Session to the freshly-installed system (backing up the files on the hard disk, and then replacing them with the files from the Live Session). This would make the complete install process faster, as I could start customizing the LiveCD in parallel with installing it.

Ubuntu installer should ask for Grub install
|

I think that the Ubuntu Installer of the live CD should ask if the user want to install Grub or not. For example a couple of years ago, Red Hat provided that option. You could choose to install grub or if you didn't want to, you could copy an executable file in a floppy disk and when you boot your system with the floppy in the floppy drive, Linux started to run. If you boot the system without the floppy, Linux didn't start.
So, I think this could be very useful for users who use Ubuntu and Windows in dual boot but who don't want to touch the MBR.
The executable file (to make ubuntu boot) could be copied in a CD or a pen drive.
I'm sorry for mistakes and my bad english.
