I think that rather than having any number of separate workspaces, you should be able to have one really wide workspace. You could then just move a little to the right or a little to the left. Desktop wallpaper, icons, and gnome panels would remain fixed while you go left or right to view windows.
For compiz users, this would be represented as a cylinder instead of a cube and you would be able to stop the cylinder anywhere, unlike the cube that restricts you to four preset locations.

Auto-magically configure Ubuntu installation

I could not install Hardy Heron on my old laptop with < 256 MB RAM
I think Ubuntu should auto-magically install the most suitable Desktop/WM depending on the system resources as explained in
http://wiki.dennyhalim.com/ubuntu-minimal-desktop
# sudo aptitude install jwm
# sudo aptitude install fluxbox
# sudo aptitude install lxde
# sudo aptitude install fvwm-crystal
# sudo aptitude install icewm
# sudo aptitude install xfce4
# sudo aptitude install gnome-core
# sudo aptitude install kde-core
# sudo aptitude install kde4-core
#
* generaly, i try to sort them with their memory usage. if you have absolute minimal ram (64meg) use the first (jwm/fluxbox only)
* at most bottom, gnome-core, kde-core and kde4-core is the heaviest. avoid them if you have very small ram (

Running a command of an uninstalled package

When you try to run a command in the terminal that does not exist, but it recognizes it as an uninstalled package, instead of telling you to type in the install command, it should instead ask you if you want to install the package it suspects you want, and install it if you type 'Y'.

Like windows, Ubuntu should provide options for creating Desktop icons and inclusion in application menu whenever a new application is installed in the system. this will provide better usability and access to the program and enhance the overall accessibility of the system.

In the visual effects tab of the appearances window, if you customize your settings, and then accidentally switch to normal or extra, this should not erase all of your customized settings.

Easy way to change an specific icon

I propose to have a tab in the appearance dialog where we can search the name of an application and have a list of all the available icons in all the themes installed for that app, so we can select the icon that we want.
It happens to me all the time that when i change an icon theme i miss an specific icon from the previous theme. Or sometimes there is one very nice, but very little theme, so a lot of the icons are reset to their original human icon (which i personally don't like).

In Gusty it was easy to select what application you wanted to use when removable media was mounted. I could select from a dropdown or enter a custom command. Now this is handled by Nautilus, which doesn't allow for custom commands or non-default applications without tweaking .Desktop files. I would like to see a return to the Gusty method.

A good CD Writer support.

The default CD writer shipped with Ubuntu has no additional support like making a Multisession disc or Audio CD. Somework should be done in this area to make it more presentable.
PS: Yes, Nero Linux is there, but why Nero? As far as I know it is not an open source organization.

gshutdown / kshutdown installed as default

Ubuntu aims at everyday use. This means people will use it for multimedia purposes, such as watching tv or listening to music etc. And just like you can set a sleep timer on your tv set at night, there exist those little usefull apps gshutdown and its kde equivalent kshutdown.
I used to write my own bash script to set a sleep timer until I got to know the tools mentioned above.
Linux newbies won't tend to write scripts and searching for sleep timer with synaptic doesn't lead to gshutdown. So why not install it by default? It could also be integrated in a conrolled way when using a multiuser system.

Text Emblems on Icons!
|

Many icon emblems aren't very good, too small, or non-existent, which in the latter case makes the icon use gnome's original emblem icon. Not very desirable. When you have really big icons on your desktop, the emblem icons don't scale very well and tend to remain small, which looks really bad. As if that wasn't enough, It is impossible to assign icons emblems at all when they're on panels. You might want to do this if you have panel of big application icons.
There are many problems regarding the emblems, thus I suggest the idea of text emblems on icons. This could be achieved by simply adding a checkbox next to the "name" input field in the preferences of each icon called "Use as emblem", or something similar. This would not only be helpful on desktop icons and icon's displayed in a nautilus window, but it would also make emblems on panel icons available! And just to clarify, the name would not be displayed in two places of the icon in the same time. Rather, the emblem text would replace the normal name text if it was displayed. The emblem text would also scale with the icon, making it esthetically appealing.

It should be possible to update packages without typing password

Updating packages via update-notifier should not require the desktop user to enter password.
Updating installed packages from a predefined trusted APT source should not be considered a risky operation.
Asking for password too often will actually decrease security since users will start entering password automatically without thinking.
And if users doesn't apply available security updates since they are scared about the password question, it will also decrease security.
(This is only relevant for Ubuntu desktop, not for servers.)

I don't know if this is possible, but it would be cool if there was a program that could enable me to set a list of programs to be present in memory from the system start. I know that this would make system startup much longer, but if you use like 6 pieces of software all the time during work like me it would make starting them up way faster.
You could make a list from the installed programs like:
- OpenOffice
- Gimp
- Audacious
- Doplhin
- Firefox
- Thunderbird
It would show the available memory and how much this would take away from it.
I imagine this by not starting the actual programs at startup (that is possible in other ways), but to make them start up extremely fast by loading most of them in memory (if you have 2GB RAM, you can spare some of it to this). If you close the program, it would dissapear, but would still be present in memory and if you click on it's icon it would appear instantly...

We all know that the Wii is a big hit. We can make linux just as successfull with these mini ideas:
- Make a program (Ubuntu Game Browser) that is like adept or synaptic but only shows games (and emulators) that can be installed/removed with proper description and screenshots. This program would be automatically installed in Programs/Games
- Help financially projects like stepmania, frets on fire, sim-city like games etc. Games that are popular and would be successful on other platforms too, or mimic other successful games exclusively in linux. Make these available in the repositories and be sure to always have the latest version.
- Make a subpage on ubuntu.com for games. Also, games should be able to send "achievment points" or high scores to this page to show the top100 gamers for each popular game. There could also be an online matchmaker here
- Make easy to use interface in gnome and kde to configure gamepads, joysticks, dancepads, wheels etc. Be sure to support out of the box the wii controller, xbox360 controller etc...

synaptic has very frustrating interface next it doesn't
mark dependencies by its own,
More silent installation of packages.
Packages ordering should be refined like themes, system applications and utilities, network related,fun/games etc
old libraries and external/third party libraries
too many dialogs makes things worst.
much better dialogs.i mean i don't want to see library files
all library needed should be installed minimal fuss with
libraries.
i don't want to understand jargon what library does what function,in turn its useless even if i understand.
better versioning and info.
better add/remove dialogs.by size,usage etc

Since Brasero is being installed by default, and in order to keep consistency through the system, the "places → CD creator" menu item should launch it instead of Nautilus CD burner.
In order to avoid duplication, too, NCB should be removed altogether.

Ubuntu is the name chosen for a global project and a distro based on Gnome. Kubuntu is another distro based on kde from the very same project.
I believe they deserve the same support from the project since Gnome and Kde are the most popular desktop manager out there.
It seems quite obvious to me, the project is very much focused on one and only distro, its first baby : ubuntu.
And it shows. Kubuntu web site looks quite poor and unprofessional compared to ubuntu. Most graphic choices like the kdm default theme (even if it's supposed to be a matter of taste) look, again, unprofessional. And finally the whole distro doesn't seem to have the same amount of attention when it comes to details (one example among others: the little thing on ubuntu warning the user about the existence of proprietary drivers for display which does not exist on kubuntu).
I've been told once, like a year ago, by an ubuntu dev that the situation is such because the project doesn't feel like fragmenting its market share.
Whatever is the official position of the project, I don't think you should do things half way.
The Kde project is itself in full evolution with Kde 4. It does deserve full support from ubuntu.
Thank you for reading.

When the mouse pointer is activating a tooltip, the screensaver never comes on (and the monitor doesn't shutdown if you have it configured).
It happens a lot when my daughter is on the computer and doesn't pay attention to where the mouse is when she leaves.
