[5145] Clean up Preferences and Administration.

First of all: What is the difference between Preferences and Administration? For example: why do I see 'Encryption and Keyrings' in Preferences and 'Keyring Manager' in Administration? What is the difference between 'Default Printer' and 'Printing'? Why do I have to disable the Tracker under Sessions and not under Search and Indexing? And why are these menu's so large? I have 24 items in Preferences (they don't even fit on my screen!) and 18 items in Administration. To put all this stuff in a popup menu is bad interface design imho. Besides, the number of option should be much smaller. A few suggestions:

- Merge 'Screensaver', 'Screen Resolution' and 'Screens and Graphics'.
- Merge 'Network', 'Network Proxy' and 'Network Tools'.
- Merge 'Update Manager, Synaptic Package Manager, Software Sources'.
- Merge 'Encryption and Keyrings', 'Authorizations', 'Keyring Manager'.

Below are all settings I can visit via the System menu. This is just way too much.

-- Preferences --
Universal Access
About Me
Appearance
Bluetooth
Default Printer
Encryption and Keyrings
Keyboard
Keyboard Shortcuts
Main Menu
Mouse
Network Proxy
PalmOS Devices (I don't have one)
Power Management
Preferred Applications
Remote Desktop
Removable Drives and Media
SCIM Input Method Setup (What is this?)
Screen Resolution
Screensaver
Search and Index (Why can't I disable the tracker here?)
Sessions
Sound
System Settings
Windows

-- Administration --
Authorizations (for what?)
Hardware Drivers
Keyring Manager (for what?)
Language Support
Login Window
Network
Network Tools
Printing
Screens and Graphics
Services
Shared Folders
Software Sources
Synaptic Package Manager (imagine a new user: wtf is Synaptic?)
System Log
System Monitor
Time and Date
Update Manager
Users and Groups

Better way to set monitor resolution and refresh rate. Majority of the new monitors are LCD type. User should be able to specify the native resolution and refresh rate during install.

Then Ubuntu/X must do WHATEVER it takes to stick to that resolution and refresh rate.

In case of multi-monitor setups, must be able to specify the configuration at time of installation.

Also, the login GUI must use same resolution as X. Why different resolutions?

Rant:
I have nVidia NVS440 card with Viewsonic VP2290b monitor. Video card must be set to 1920x1200 @13Hz or @41Hz refresh rate for each of it's four outputs. Desktop must be arranged in 2x2 matrix. Then monitor displays 3840x2400 @13Hz or @41Hz.

This worked very well in Ubuntu 6.06. Installed Ubuntu 7.04 and ended up with something like 800x480, even with nVidia binary drivers. Tweaked xorg.conf for weeks to get this to work. BulletProofX kept messing with my hand crafted xorg.conf file; which did work with 6.06. Eventually gave up and started using Windaz again :-( Will try again when frustration level has come down.
I would like to have a single interface (Codec Manager) that lists all of the most common audio and video formats and shows me if I am missing the necessary codec for playback.

Use Case: Enable MP3 playback.
Precondition: MP3s are not currently playable.
1. User logs into the system.
2. User opens the Codec Manager.
3. System displays a list of common audio/video formats.
4. User selects MP3s.
5. System displays some info about MP3s.
6. System displays a list of available codecs.
7. User selects a codec and clicks Apply.
8. System downloads and installs the selected codec.
9. System informs the user when completed.

Other possible features:
- Display a list of audio/video types that are missing codecs.
- An auto-setup function, that grabs the recommended codec for all formats.

Audio and Video formats that should be supported:

Audio:
- MP3
- OGG
- AAC
- FLAC
- Real Audio

Video:
- MP4
- Windows Media
- XVID
- DIVX
- Quicktime
- Real Video
However, this is the same effect as for crashed applications.

With crashed applications, you usually have to wait a few seconds to see if it has really crashed, but with low-battery you want to grab a power-cable as quickly as possible.

I suggest changing the crash effect to a "broken" window, like this: http://fbsd.za.net/other/uploads/uploads/kde4.jpg

[284] Give Nautilus more love! (idea examples)

Nautilus does its job as a light file manager. However, as Gnome's default file manager, I think it could use a lot more love than what it is given. This could include:

- Tabbed browsing! Most browsers today support tabbed browsing, but still few file managers. This doesn't really make sense now does it?
- Better remote connection/sftp handling. The current one is AWFUL. Slow, sluggish, buggy. Take example on Konqueror!
- SVN integration has been waved at. I find it a cool idea, even if only as a plugin.
- Speaking of plugins... those also need some love. How many plugins are there for Nautilus? Most users don't even know Nautilus can be enhanced.
- File tooltips - once again, take example on Konqueror / Windows explorer.

Edit: A few more ideas around Brainstorm:
- Separation of files and folders
- Slider bar for zoom
- A better icon management
- The ability to explode folders

Those are just a handful of ideas. My main concern is Nautilus is being underdeveloped, and the solid alternative is only non-Gnome (Konqueror).

If you liked this idea, check out my other ideas.

[15] Unified Brainstorm/Launchpad Submission Front-End

***Idea***

Provide a unified submission front-end for Brainstorm and Launchpad.

This unified submission front-end would allow all ideas, package requests, and bug reports to be submitted using one form. Then, the form handling system could determine the appropriate disposition:

- Bugs and package requests would be directed to Launchpad
- Other Ideas would be directed to Brainstorm

For obvious reasons, a related idea would be to merge/join the login credentials for Launchpad and Brainstorm.

***Situation Analysis***

Currently, many Brainstorm "ideas" are actually bug reports or package requests. The appropriate means for handling bug reports and package requests is Launchpad. Submitting these to Brainstorm is problematic for two reasons:

1) The bug reports and package requests do not get seen by the developers, who use Launchpad to collect, triage, and act upon them.
2) Actual ideas submitted to Brainstorm do not receive the attention they otherwise would, since the submissions are diluted with bug reports and package requests.

Other Brainstorm ideas address this issue; for example:

- Brainstorm: Make clear that "Add [...] to repos" belongs to launchpad.
- Make people aware Brainstorm isn't for bug reporting
( http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/4735/ )
- Bugs posted to brainstorm should be moved to Ubuntu bug tracker database
( http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/8881/ )
- etc.

***Rationale***

A unified submission front-end would be more user-friendly. Many users want to contribute to Ubuntu by calling attention to bugs, making package requests, or suggesting ideas to improve Ubuntu; however, especially for new users, having different systems to which to submit all of the above might be confusing.

A unified submission front-end would allow either the submission system (ideally) or moderators (less ideally) to sort submissions and direct them appropriately. The advantage is two-fold:

1) The right submissions get directed to the right location. Developers see bug reports and package requests, while Brainstorm members see ideas.
2) Brainstorm and Launchpad become more efficient, as incorrectly directed submissions are reduced/eliminated.

***Potential Issues***

The two primary difficulties with implementation of this idea would be:

1) Tying together users' Launchpad and Brainstorm login credentials.

2) Building a form-submission system that is capable of sorting submissions and directing them to two different systems. In other words, connecting one front end with two different back ends (Launchpad and Brainstorm).

***First Edit, To Add***

Other ideas have suggested a single sign-on solution to the various Ubuntu websites:

- Enable OpenID for Ubuntu Sites
- Single login to Ubuntu websites
- And many duplicates of each

Implementation of single sign-on across all Ubuntu websites will/should address the first issue listed above.

Also, I think this idea could resolve other, proposed ideas such as merging Brainstorm into Launchpad:
- Integrate Brainstorm in Launchpad/Move it to Launchpad
( http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/2188/ )
