No more Authorization for Pidgin
Written by Wiplash4 the 15 Jun 08 at 08:13. Global category: Internet & Networking. Not an idea
It is unnerving to ask for Auth. if one shifts a contact to another Group or changes the name of the group.

Better monitor support and configuration tools
Written by No0ne the 29 Feb 08 at 00:37. Global category: Graphics. Implemented
Better way to set monitor resolution and refresh rate. Majority of the new monitors are LCD type. User should be able to specify the native resolution and refresh rate during install.

Then Ubuntu/X must do WHATEVER it takes to stick to that resolution and refresh rate.

In case of multi-monitor setups, must be able to specify the configuration at time of installation.

Also, the login GUI must use same resolution as X. Why different resolutions?

Rant:
I have nVidia NVS440 card with Viewsonic VP2290b monitor. Video card must be set to 1920x1200 @13Hz or @41Hz refresh rate for each of it's four outputs. Desktop must be arranged in 2x2 matrix. Then monitor displays 3840x2400 @13Hz or @41Hz.

This worked very well in Ubuntu 6.06. Installed Ubuntu 7.04 and ended up with something like 800x480, even with nVidia binary drivers. Tweaked xorg.conf for weeks to get this to work. BulletProofX kept messing with my hand crafted xorg.conf file; which did work with 6.06. Eventually gave up and started using Windaz again :-( Will try again when frustration level has come down.

Unified Brainstorm/Launchpad Submission Front-End
Written by chipbennett the 8 Jul 08 at 16:22. Related project: brainstorm.ubuntu.com. New
***Idea***

Provide a unified submission front-end for Brainstorm and Launchpad.

This unified submission front-end would allow all ideas, package requests, and bug reports to be submitted using one form. Then, the form handling system could determine the appropriate disposition:

- Bugs and package requests would be directed to Launchpad
- Other Ideas would be directed to Brainstorm

For obvious reasons, a related idea would be to merge/join the login credentials for Launchpad and Brainstorm.

***Situation Analysis***

Currently, many Brainstorm "ideas" are actually bug reports or package requests. The appropriate means for handling bug reports and package requests is Launchpad. Submitting these to Brainstorm is problematic for two reasons:

1) The bug reports and package requests do not get seen by the developers, who use Launchpad to collect, triage, and act upon them.
2) Actual ideas submitted to Brainstorm do not receive the attention they otherwise would, since the submissions are diluted with bug reports and package requests.

Other Brainstorm ideas address this issue; for example:

- Brainstorm: Make clear that "Add [...] to repos" belongs to launchpad.
- Make people aware Brainstorm isn't for bug reporting
( http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/4735/ )

Delete CD/DVD-Creator and Recent Documents from Places
Written by Wiplash4 the 30 Apr 08 at 08:16. Global category: Accessibility. Not an idea
Recent Documents is not necessary, since Users can link their important documents to the desktop. It is overkill!

Some people do not have a dvd-writer and somehow I guess they will become obsolete since USB-storage devices ae enhaced.

Tool to update 32 bits version to 64 bits version
Written by orzoweitop the 10 Apr 08 at 20:37. Related project: Synaptic package manager. New
I would like a tool that help me to change my ubuntu installation (32 bits) to a ubuntu installation (64 bits), after i installed ubuntu 32 bits.

I think, that probably is not possible to update the system files, but it is possible to update (because in the fact, 32 and 64 are show as same) my preferences, my files (music, video...).

In resum, I would like a tool that help me to change my ubuntu 32 bits to ubuntu 64 bits with the less data lose.

Solution #1: Allow upgrade to 64 bits
Written by orzoweitop the 10 Apr 08 at 20:37.
allow to upgrade 32-bit Ubuntu to 64-bit version by Internet or special Upgrade CD (alternate CD?). Doesn't have to be ideal (just preserve home folder/partition and the list of installed applications, maybe also some setting files - as during normal upgrade).

Solution #2: Allow downgrade to 32 bits or give a warning
Written by mikropolip the 5 Jun 09 at 17:14.
If downgrade to 32bit system from 64-bit is impossible, there should be a warning message before upgrading 32-bit ubuntu to 64-bit system: it should say that it is a point of no return.

Automatic address book sync for Thunderbird
Written by Wiplash4 the 28 Dec 08 at 11:59. Related project: Firefox. Not an idea
I use gmail imap with thunderbird and it has to be cleaned up. Please do following:
1. Please seperate between every account. This way there will be no conflict!
2. Thunderbird currently shows for my imap gmail all the gmail folders plus another Inbox, Sent, Trash and a segment Local folders with Unsent and Trash. Delete that and display only the gmail folders (since this is an imap, if I wanted to store emails, I would save them myself and usually accounts provides all necessary folders). Please do make is accessable without an Addon. If thunderbird does not have a connection to the account, show the previous session.
3. Distinct between all accounts in the address book, sync them automatically and do not preinstall books (like personal book or whatsoever). Keep the intern tree of an imap. For local folders allow me to set the path on my hard disk for each book. Make it available without Addon!
4 Clean up account settings in Edit. The user should set the incoming servers the way outgoind servers are set and connect them together. So one could use the incoming server of one server, the outgoing of another, the contacts, calendar, notes of a third.
5. Allow thunderbird to be ran in the background with an icon in the notification area. Let the user decide, whether thunderbird disappears or terminates, if I click the cross.

Menus in control centre
Written by Wiplash4 the 19 Dec 08 at 11:47. Global category: Accessibility. Not an idea
1. Detect a pheripherie and display a menu only in case device is plugged in. Assume keyboard and mouse not be standart!
2. Unify all menus: It is stupid that I configure the Keyboard in 2 menus, grafix card in 4 menus (Screen resolution, nvidia settings, etc.), volume and sound in 2 menus.
3. Do not show items which are not there! I o not have blutooth in my desktop, but in my laptop.
4. Do not show items which are not installed: My desktop has no modem, but Laptop has one!
5. Detect all buttons! My keyboard has extra keys as well as my former mouse.
