Clickable Links In Notifications
Written by Vampireboi the 9 Feb 10 at 00:09. Global category: Internet & Networking. New
I use twitter and other social apps that make use of the notification system. Often when someone posts, they share a link, but to follow this link I must pull up a browser, go to the social site, and then click the link. Linkage in notifications would save mountains of time.

Anything that needs to be clicked on should have an icon in the system tray. That way, there would be nothing to click in the bubble, as before, but anything that really does need to be clicked on has its own icon.

Solution #4: Make it contextual
Written by SirCmpwn the 24 May 11 at 16:47.
If a notification doesn't have interactive content, make it disappear when the mouse moves over it, just like it does now. But add the option for developers to specify interactive content like buttons and links, and only then should it not fade on mouse over (or if the developer specifically specifies for it not to fade on mouse over).

As for what kind of interactive content, just make it a container that you can throw GUI into, just like a window.

Solution #5: Make notifications ether open or dissappear
Written by olie440 the 5 Jul 11 at 19:57.
I think that the notifications would be better if they ether opened the corresponding program or disappear when clicked on,eg. the new message box would open up the relevant chat window when it was clicked on, and evolution would open the new message, however i think it would also be good for notifications for say banshee disappeared when clicked on.

F-Spot essential improvements
Written by Emacs23 the 11 Oct 08 at 11:02. Related project: F-Spot Photo Manager. Not an idea
1) Scan library directory for the new image files. Optionally open import dialog or use their own metadata for the newly discovered files.

2) Do not determine both if a file containes an image or the image type by file name extension. Use tools like "file" command line utility (man 1 file for details).

// I don't know if f-spot use extension for discovering image type, but, definitely, it uses extension to determine if the file is an image on. When I tried to import image file without extension, f-spot didn't show it.

After a fresh install I put my podcasts into the same place, re added the podcast feeds but then found Rhythmbox couldn't tell my podcasts were all ready on my system and from what I could tell downloaded them all again.

So in short if its an index file thats needed or something else to have this in the podcast directory would make import/export an easier option.

For example If I wanted to transfer my podcast collection to another uses system. it would see the feeds and that the files are all ready there.

Solution #11: Make Rhythmbox clean the metadata of files in library
Written by manuelciosici the 22 Feb 10 at 17:44.
I've already been thinking of this for a while. It is really annoying for me to see songs in my library that have bad meta data. Now most if this can be cleaned by some good thinking.

* show a list of songs that have similar artist names so that the user can fix them if there is a problem (eg 'Beatles' vs 'The Beatles'). Use Wikipedia or some other online service to get more info. Also add the Ignore option so that Rhythmbox doesn't always annoy the user for two artists that have similar names.

* For a song that already has an artist set, but no album, try using the web to find the information and add it.

* Try spell checking the title of a song. Last.fm has a similar feature where is corrects titles of songs when users' songs have some spelling errors.

* If the title of all songs in an album starts like 01, 02 and so on it is likely that the numbers are track numbers. Delete them and add them as track numbers.

Solution #12: Add a 'Organize my Music folder' option

Solution #13: Four little design improvements
Written by Liso22 the 28 Mar 10 at 00:39.
The biggest problem with Rhythmbox is the interface, I'm not talking about eyecandy but that it just isn't functional,

1- First and most important having the playlists on a separate list is completely useless and it leads to that when Rhythmbox isn't fully maximized the playlists just don't show, and are completely unusable. I don't think anybody can argue about this one.

2- The progress bar and the name song take two lines of the screen, vertical size is very valuable due to wide 16:10 screens and also laptops and netbooks, I'm on a laptop screen and every extra line takes like 10% of my screen size. I suggest just removing the song's name as it is already displayed in the title bar, it could also be included

3- "play count" should be replaced by "plays" which saves invaluable space.

4- Also the show/hide browser icon has absolutely nothing to do with what it does, it should be replaced by a symbol showing three columns or something like that more representative of what it does.

I'm not talking about completely redesigning the interface as you can see I only think Rhythmbox should start to make these little changes, that though it may seem unnoticeable at first when using the program they would be GREATLY appreciated, I can't think about more at the moment but I'm sure people will come up with more neat ideas, I just hope they take the time to implement them.

This is the mockup of how it'd look after implemented these little interface changes:

Solution #15: Integrate the cover art plugin into Rhythmbox
Written by Liso22 the 29 Mar 10 at 00:44.
When I want to hide cover art I need to disable the plugin, needless to say this is ridiculous, also every player comes with the option to show cover art integrated, it's very lame it isn't packed with the player. Basically the plugin should be integrated with Rhythmbox.

To switch it off you could either just drag it down to make it disappear or else there should be an option under the "view tab" to hide cover art.

Solution #16: Three more Improvements
Written by Liso22 the 29 Mar 10 at 01:00.
1- Right now playlists can't be ordered by artist, album, name or anything, for some reason they remain in the order you dragged them into the playlist and also the number of inclusion (to the playlist) is always showing at the far left, I don't know if this is a bug or if it's been done for some wicked reason but it should be fixed right away.

2- Columns (name, artist, length, plays...) can't be ordered by the user, users should be able to drag them wherever they want, also you can't select which to show with right click like you can in any other player.

3- I don't see any option to repeat a song over and over as there is on iTunes or Banshee. I can't think of many cases when I wanted to do it, but I used it now and then.

Problem: Reinstallation of Software after OS reinstall or upgrade
Written by kikl the 25 Mar 10 at 20:14. Related project: Synaptic package manager. New
In a month ubuntu 10.04 will be shipped and the majority of ubuntu users is going to want to upgrade to the new version. The best method is to do a clean install of the new OS in order to get a fast and stable running ubuntu. However, after reinstalling ubuntu, all of the programms previously installed must be reinstalled. This includes possible extensions for firefox, openoffice... Users don't know after a while, how they changed their system. But they want the programs to work like they used to. This can be very tedious and time consuming...

Solution #1: Automatic manual Software installation history file for reinstall after upgrade
Written by kikl the 25 Mar 10 at 20:14.
Here is my idea. Create a file in synaptic that tracks the changes to the manually installed packages, i.e. the additional software downloaded and installed by the user. This could be a simple text file. If the user wants to install that software after an upgrade, he must only import this file into synaptic - or the ubuntu software centre - All the programms are automatically installed. This is also a way of backing up your computer system...

Advantage: Reinstall of software is greatly simplified after reinstall or upgrade of the OS...

Solution #3: automatic software synchronization across multiple computers
Written by kikl the 10 Apr 10 at 10:35.
Many people have to take care of several computers, a desktop, a laptop, ... The installation file on ubuntu one could be synced across multiple computers.

For example: If I install a particular program on one of my computers, it is automatically installed once I boot up another computer, which is synced with the ubuntu-one installation file. If the ubuntu-one installation file is more recent than the local file on the computer, the new file from ubuntu-one is automatically downloaded and imported into synaptic/software centre...

This is a fast and simple way of keeping all of your computers up-to-date.

Solution #4: automatic backup and synchronization of sources list for repositories
Written by kikl the 19 Apr 10 at 10:55.
Additionally, users my add certain repositories using e.g. ppa's. I believe these repositories and keys are contained in the sources list. In addition to backing up and syncing the individual applications using ubuntu one, the sources list could also be backed up and synchronized across plural computers using ubuntu one!

Email integrated into filesystem
Written by mydoghasworms the 6 Apr 10 at 18:50. Global category: Internet & Networking. New
Here's a new, innovative idea: Email integrated into the filesystem. The idea basically involves email items appearing as files in the filesystem, rather than having a separate email client program.
This means that emails are stored and manipulated as regular files that you would open with a special, single pane reader, while there would also be a special view for authoring emails.
Advantages:
* Unprecedented ease of backup and moving around of emails
* Users who are familiar with navigating the file system will find this new way of working with emails very intuitive
* No separate email client program required

Emails can be stored as the text representation of the actual file received (header, message, attachments).

Solution #1: Email integrated into filesystem
Written by mydoghasworms the 6 Apr 10 at 18:50.
An idea consisting of:
1. No separate email client program. Mail items appear as files on the filesystem.
2. New folder: /home/user/Email to hold email items (possibly in respective account directories)
3. Settings are controlled by applet similar to indicator-applet (account setup, show when new mail arrives, etc)
4. When only one email account is in existence, Inbox, Sent Items etc. appear directly under the /home/user/Mail directory, otherwise, a separate directory for each account exists with the respective folders underneath
5. New emails are composed by either using a menu item in the new applet, or a context menu in the Mail directory (Nautilus enhancement/script?)
6. Context menu on email files to forward, reply, etc.
7. If only one mail account is configured, show folders directly below /home/user/Mail, otherwise have a directory for each account containing the subfolders.
8. The subject shows up as the file name
9. In a mail folder list view, Nautilus must show the usual columns you are used to from your email client: from, subject, size, attachment, received etc.
10. A single-screen reader and composer dialog must be available for viewing and composing emails. These can be easily scripted, and be part of the application.

The following screenshot shows a mockup of the folders in an email directory and the options on the new applet for composing a new mail, checking for mail, and setting config options, such as email accounts, etc.

The following is a mockup of an inbox showing a few mail items in Icon view mode. The subject is the file name. List mode should show all the columns with which you are familiar from an email client (as described above).

Solution #2: Apply the same concept to contacts, tasks and calendar items
Written by mydoghasworms the 6 Apr 10 at 19:09.

Solution #3: Provide a calendar view in Nautils for calendar items

Solution #4: Mount mail/calendar/... folders as a drive
Written by Ssdg the 7 Apr 10 at 19:41.
The idea is to implement mails as a gvfs add-on.
The same can be done for calendars, tasks, and contacts.

A standard has to be implemented. (maybe using maildir for mails, vcards, ...) and using files that work like /sys to write new items.

It's just an example, it can be improved.

And there could be an application that can read such directory structures an present them in a nice way.

Solution #6: Keep account in a sub-folder even if it is the only account.
Written by Darwin Survivor the 7 Apr 10 at 22:05.
Having a single account reside directly in ~/Email when it is the only one will cause confusion and bugs when adding/removing the second account. It's much easier to simply have a single account folder inside ~/Email when there is only one account.

Solution #7: Use inotify for sending/replying to emails instead of using applets.
Written by Darwin Survivor the 7 Apr 10 at 22:12.
Being filesystem based, this system could be implemented on non-gnome (or even non-Xserver) installations. Allowing all functions to be done directly at the filesystem level removes the need for the user's particular GUI to be compatible with the system.

GUI applets could still be easily created that interface with the filesystem.

Ex:
Save a file into ~/Email/_account_/Send/ to send it (same for Reply/Forward/etc)

Inotify could be used to tell when an email has been added for sending, then it can wait for the user to *close* the file and send it (moving it to .../Sent/)

Video Support In Rhythmbox.

SoftwareStore should be renamed   forum
Written by orlox the 8 Sep 09 at 13:19. Related project: Add/Remove program dialog. Implemented
The name SoftwareStore has received a lot of criticism, and I'm yet to find someone who agrees with it (although, someone must agree since they changed the name).

I think the word "store" will immediately associate the application to commercial software, but the application itself will be centred on free software.

Also, the name seems to hurt user feedback, since most of them just start a discussion on how bad the name is, and alternatives to it, instead of doing some constructive discussion on the features, scope and importance of the project.

Selected solution (#1): Return to the old name: AppCenter
Written by orlox the 8 Sep 09 at 13:19.
The old name, AppCenter, seemed to be widely accepted. It's a short, yet informative name, that expresses the idea of the application in a very good way (a frontend that integrates all other software management frontends in a consistent way)

Perhaps this name should be restored, leave the package and executable named as appcenter, and list it in the administration menu as "Application Center" or "Ubuntu Application Center".

Selected solution (#3): Use a name with the word software (but not store)
Written by orlox the 9 Sep 09 at 02:54.
An "app" is not something widely recognized, so it might be better to choose a name for this application that uses the word "software", but not the name store. Besides, this interface will serve to install many things that qualify as software, but not as an application (like codecs and fonts).

Pehaps, a contraction of the word like "soft" or "sw" could also be used for the application name (i.e. package name, executable, launchpad entry, etc...), while menu entries describe it using the whole word to keep clarity for unexperienced users.

Even more, the word software is correctly recognized by many non-english speakers, including some that are relatively computer-illiterate.

Since there's an infinite amount of alternative names that can be used here, perhaps this solution can be kept open to various alternatives (for now).

I didn't know whether I should add to the already long list of suggestions, but I wanted to approach this from a 'tad' different perspective.

I'm trying to think of a name that people can use with a sense of endearment like most of Apple's products. "Software Box" was the best thing I could come up with (as in "I need some software for X and Y"- "just look in the box").

I don't expect users to choose my idea for a name but I still want contributors to stop thinking about words that sound mechanical, dead and literal ("Software Center") and think about something more colloquial and friendly instead. Could you imagine your dad or mom saying it?

Written by wolterh the 19 Sep 09 at 19:37.
I think the solution title says it all.

I like the Software Depot because it reminds me of Starcraft's Supply Depots. They always intrigued me.

Anyway, my other proposal is to call it Software Warehouse, but I understand that it may be highly criticized for phonetically it sounds repetitive as of softWARE WAREhouse, but that could be solved by changing Warehouse for Storehouse. Storehouse because it embeds the concept of storage (which is from where store comes from) but it gets rid of the commercial idea. Storehouse makes us think about a Warehouse, without having the phonetic problem described above.

Selected solution (#25): Software BIN
Written by mahajanudit the 23 Sep 09 at 19:00.
Bin is synonymous to warehouse, which means a storage place without implicitly implying commercialism.
But I think it's better than warehouse, cz somehow the name 'warehouse' just doesn't go...

Selected solution (#26): Ubuntu S/W EpiCentre
Written by gaara87 the 25 Sep 09 at 16:14.
Ubuntu's heart is the kernel, but the softwares and applications are responsible for making the difference between two personalised Ubuntus. Much like saying, what differentiates you from me is the way we think!

Ubuntu:Humanism is a free form of thinking where its inception lies in the difference in thinking, hence the EpiCentre of Ubuntu, much like the Mind being the EpiCentre of a Human!:-)

Alt+F2 should propose to install programs not found
Written by huit_six the 10 Mar 10 at 09:07. Related project: Synaptic package manager. New
When trying to launch a command with Alt+F2, if the program could not be found, there is only an error message. The user who wants to launch a program which hasn't been installed yet has to :
* Open synaptic or software
* Make a search
* install
* ...

And if it wasn't found, then, the user have to know the right sources of information, for installing a new repo, or a compiling a software.

Solution #1: Dialog box which propose to install the software
Written by huit_six the 10 Mar 10 at 09:07.
There should be a dialog box which would propose to install the software (or possibly one in a list).

For example:
* One hits Alt+F2 and tries to execute the command gimp
* On Lucid, this command has disappeared by default
* A dialog box pops-up and says :
"The program Gimp isn't installed yet on your system, but is provided by the package 'gimp'. Do you want to install and execute it now ?"
* If the user clicks on yes/Ok, a summary of installations is shown.
* Then apt-get installs the package and launches the command gimp.

What's more, if nothing was found on the repository, there should be a message either :
* inviting the user to search on ubuntu documentation sites for an alternative repo or way of installation.
* or listing command names which could have been misspelled.

This would have several benefits on well known softwares :
* No need to launch synaptic, or software store
* No need to perform a search
* A disappeared software from a new release of ubuntu could be quickly installed again.
* In general, a better information given to the user and a better user experience.
* Extend the system in place for codec/drivers/language/ff plug-ins to software and gain in homogeneity.

[PS] Excuse my bad English, I'm French and if I made mistakes, please mention it, thanks !

Don't clone MacOS X
Written by chris109 the 4 Mar 10 at 15:40. Global category: Look and Feel. Not an idea
I recently read about the new default design "Light" and noticed that the window buttons now on the left side, like in MacOS X.

As Mark Shuttleworth said he wants Ubuntu to be more like MacOS X, I was pleased, because I thought the goal was to get Ubuntu as elegant and easy to use as MacOS X.

But now I'm really disappointed to see, developers and designers cloning every single attribute of it's user interface.

- That is just poor.
- It harms Ubuntus integrity if it looks like an clone of MacOS X.
- It doesn't fit users requirements, because most Ubuntu Users switch from Windows or never used a computer before.

Solution #1: Get someone who is able to design an Ubuntu-way of user experiance
Written by chris109 the 4 Mar 10 at 15:40.
Find someone
who is able to understand how people work (think),
who is able to understand what really makes MacOS X as elegant as it is,
who is able to define the same (or a higher) level of elegance in an "Ubuntu-way"
and who is able to communicate a holistic concept to the community.

Don't just clone something peace by peace, because you didn't understand it.

Solution #2: Do Nothing
Written by Vampireboi the 4 Mar 10 at 17:14.
There are newly posted screenshots of the "light" theme.
They show the window controls back where the belong.

http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2010/03/worried-ubuntu-1004-will-have-left-hand.html

In reference to a "Ubuntu-way" just wait for gnome shell.

Smile and be happy we aren't Orange and Brown anymore.

Allow The Use Of Proxy For Update And Installation Of Packages
Written by Vampireboi the 4 Mar 10 at 17:37. Related project: Update manager. Already implemented
I am in the process of convincing my school to move away from Windows but one problem that they have is that the school uses a proxy for Internet filtering. With this proxy enabled, it is not possible to install new apps or update the system.

Solution #1: Add this ability.
Written by Vampireboi the 4 Mar 10 at 17:37.
I have no clue on how to do this but one should be able to use a proxy for updates.
