I like Rhythmbox a lot! I love the cover art retrieving functionality, but I think it would be perfect if Rhythmbox use the cover art in the local HD (inside the album folfer would be great).
Nothing important, but nice.
Thanks a lot!!

Make installation of 64-bit on desktop easier. There are many obstructions such a Flash, Opera, Skype etc. And many MANY others...
Many users still use 32-bit Ubuntu just because they scare - complicated setup of 64-bit means less users > Less desktop users means less topics at support phorums > less help > more (unsolved) problems for new 64-bit users.
All new computers are 64-bit (Intel/AMD). Be more oriented to new "standard" desktop computers and take the advantages!
Yes, it's a 64-bit world ;-)

Since Intrepid, the installer contains a slide show which shows function demonstrations and basic usage of the new Ubuntu version. It would be nice if this slide show will be shown in the upgrade window, when upgrading to a newer Ubuntu version. This gives the user an impression of new features in the next version.

Smooth Expanding/Contracting of file trees

Ubuntu feels really great to use with activated "Extra Visual Effects" (System > Preferences > Appearance > Visual Effects).
Everything is smooth, wobbly, fancy. In contrast, browsing files in Nautilus File Browser feels awkward. It is rough, almost brutal if you compare it to a soft pop up of a menu.
Expanding a file tree should look similar to the effect on this website: http://moofx.mad4milk.net/ (Click on the headings to see what I mean.)
Expanding should be smooooth (as shown). The root element (=the element you want to expend) should also be scrolled to the top to have as much space as possible to show the children elements.
If you do not like the particular effect but would like to have smooth expanding of file trees, please still vote up this idea.

I noticed that when going through the bulletproof-x wizard, it doesn't let you select the proprietary NVidia or ATI drivers as easily as you can after Ubuntu has been booted. I propose we should include that ability. Once that is done, the display should be refreshed to allow us to select a resolution that those drivers support. Otherwise it only lets you select 640x480 I find. This happens when connecting to a hdtv where the xorg.conf is not valid and I can only select 640x480 because of the generic vga driver that is currently loaded. So after the proprietary driver is reloaded, it should read in the edid modes that the hdtv supports and allow me to select one of them.

Update-manager: Show the repository where each update is coming from.

Update-manager just shows a list. I have no way of knowing which repositories are behind which updates.
What is to prevent a third-party repository from pushing updates for *any* package on my system?
Example: Say I add the repo for Banshee media player. I expect (and trust) it will only push updates that involve Banshee, but what is to stop them from pushing a non-banshee related update? Maybe it's a bit paranoid of me, but I'd like to know which updates are coming from which repo. Then, at least if I see a third-party repo pushing an update for something like sudo, then I'll know something is fishy - but right now I have no way of knowing where the updates are coming from, and that bothers me.
Also, the update-mananger, could possibly group the update list by repository.

When I heard about Apple's MobileMe I knew at once that this is a killer application for every smartphone. With the new Linux-based smartphones coming, Ubuntu should provide a similar feature.
A smartphone without a calendar and an address book that are up to date is worthless!
When they realise this idea they could provide an additional feature: Everyone should get the option to store its personal information (address, phone number, gpg key, ...) and make it accessible to its friends. Important is that only persons that are authorized should be able to see this.
The big advantage is that all your friends are up to date with your phone number and email address (if this feature is well integrated in your address book)!
To make it perfect you should be able to show different information to your friends and to your business contacts. And you should be able to delete persons from your list of friends so that they don't get any updates about you.
Such an account should be available for free (to gain enough users), if possible including an eMail account. There should be a Thunderbird plug-in so that it can be used with every OS. And there should be the option to have a "premium account" (for a monthly fee) with extra disk space for a photo gallery, backups etc.
This would really push Linux into the mobile age!

Ubuntu has become arguably the most popular linux distribution. I think its time for Ubuntu developers to set aside some internal resources to push Ubuntu ahead of the pack.
We should form a dedicated team responsible for the development of "nex-gen" ideas. Currently most linux distros just mimic ideas found on Mac or Windows (compiz, menubars, themes, networking, etc.). There really aren't any "innovative" idea for linux, in the strictest sense of the term. Assemble a team that is dedicated to developing NEW ideas. I realize that Ubuntu would rather go the "tried and tested" route, but I think we should leave some room open for bleeding edge innovations (some of which can be found right here on brainstorm!)
It could even be made into a contest, where people could submit their own NEW ideas. Keep the Ubuntu circle in the cutting edge. Possibily a prize, recognition, etc.

/media folder should display only device icons not folder icons

Ya,surprisingly when ever you navigate from top to bottom:
computer>>media folder it shows device icons
when i browse some folder and press up goto /media folder it shows mounted devices as folder in /media forlder, which in case is very bad.a new user seeing this would be baffled somewhat, but i can explain to person who is next to me not every new person from windows background.
Take this in general that every device whether mounted or unmounted should show only there respective icons rather than folder icons.Like Cd/dvd media Icon for dvd writer/cd writer(actually in properties say no mounted volume when no cd/dvd is there in drive).show Harddisk icons both in computer or in /media folder.

The Ubuntu site should have videos, screencaps, screenshots, demos, factsheets etc. in preparation of a new Ubuntu release. Build some hype around new released showing user what is new, and how we have improved this release. Look at all the hype that gets generated around new OS X releases. Get people interested in learning about BASIC Ubuntu features, and highlight WHATS NEW. Something as simple as a countdown clock for the next release, a press event, or even a press release.
Not all of us have time to test out each alpha/beta release and to pour over release notes to see what has changed. Lets get people excited every 6 months! Don't underestimate the power of marketing.

Greater integration of Motion sensing into Ubuntu

The use of accellerometers and motion sensing is going to increase massively over the next year. Lets develop a framework for them, and start integrating it into Ubuntu now.
Some uses may include:
- Ability to set off alarm if laptop with locked screen is moved (or to perform an action)
- New screensavers which detect the motion of the computer
- Work on integrating support into games to improve them (maybe have a pinball-like game for instance).
- Pause CD burning and resume if motion is detected, so that its more likely to produce a good burn (no more idiots knocking laptops stopping the burn for instance)
- Park the Harddisk heads (duh, everyone does that these days).
If we start developing awesome support for them, its likely dell will integrate them into the next gen of their linux desktops/laptops, which will definately help our cause.
We could be the first OS to use motion sensing extensively, and in a good way, not just for HDD head parking, and tech demos.

Integrated GUI to manage REMOTE CONTROLS (Bluetooth/IR/UIRT,HID phones, wii, lirc)

There should be an intuitive GUI for configuring all types of remote controls from bluetooth phones (and wii remotes?) to media centre style infra-red controllers.
It should interface with the LIRC daemon (lircd, irexec, irxevent) and HID daemon (hidd) along with other projects starting and stopping required services as devices become available.
The user should be able to select a preset profile containing sensible button mappings for their remote.
It must also be possible to graphically customise button mappings and create for instance .hid files to upload to compatible mobile phones and other devices. Also handle configuration of virtual pointer 'mice' and such devices.
Mappings could be dynamically linked to the particular application currently in use. ie. movie mappings chosen when totem/mplayer/vlc is open and audio mappings for amarok/ryhthmbox etc.
Maybe generic play/pause/next track/previous track/volume functions could be linked with gnome-settings-daemon as it already provides this functionality over dbus for multimedia keys.
Support could be added for full duplex remotes and tablets requiring backend servers such as bemused or remuco. Maybe a widely available java client for phones/PDA/XDA's could be developed/adapted (JamSE).
The LinuxMCE experience might serve as inspiration/guidance.

Make tab switching consistent

|
Written by forteller the 11 Mar 08 at 14:44. Category: Accessibility.

One irritating thing about Ubuntu (I guess Linux in general) is the small inconsistencies. Take the way you switch tabs. In some places (like Firefox), you use Ctrl+Tab/Ctrl+Shift+Tab to switch to the next/previous tab, which in my mind is quite logical. But then in other places (like Nautilu's properties dialog) you can't do that. Instead you have to use Ctrl+PgUp/PgDwn, which I think is quite confusing for new users. Also, in the aforementioned properties dialog this is very impractical because if you get to the tab "Open With" or "Notes", the Ctrl+PgUp/PgDwn key combo stops working! In yet other places (like gEdit) none of the above key combos work! There you have to use Alt+1/2/3/etc.!
That means that there are at least three different ways of changing tabs in the default applications of Ubuntu! In my view that is not acceptable! I don't mind there being different ways to switch tabs, as long as they all work in all apps. This is the case in Firefox, where you can use any of the key combos mentioned above to switch tabs. I would like at least the most known of these key combos (Ctrl+Tab/Ctrl+Shift+Tab) to work across all apps in Ubuntu. Please! :)
[PS: I'm not sure if this should be in Accessibility or Look and Feel. If it's placed in the wrong category, I hope an admin will move it for me. Thanks!]

Make every wallpaper as striking as the 8.04 Heron one

Enough with the OSX style swirls. From now on lets have a striking image FOR EVERY RELEASE. The current 8.04 wallpaper is just so much more stylish and rememberable than generic swirls.
My suggestion would be to make each wallpaper tie in with the animal name. Like there were some pretty cool Gibson graphics being used on tshirts and the like but why couldn't they have been used as part of the wallpaper? They would have been just as striking as the new Heron one.
I think there is perhaps a side benefit to using the animal name as every graphical designer gets 8 months heads up on the next name and hence the next theme of the graphic, so there should be no reason why come release time you wont have a bunch of cool graphics to choose from.

Apt-url should inform of newer versions of app in un-added repos.
|

Say you want to install the latest version of an app - take Banshee media player for example. You click on the apt-url, fully expecting it to do what you want. You then patiently wait as it downloads and installs several packages. After all that, you go to the menu, fire up the app, only to find out that it's an out-of-date version. :-(( bummer.
Apt-url promises the ease of 1-click install, but (to the joy of some and the disapointment of others) it will only install from the repositories you have already approved of. This means you will often install an out-of-date (albeit tested) package from the official Ubuntu repos, when maybe you would have preferred to install the most recent package - which may be in PPA, or some other third-party repo, or who knows where. As it now stands, unless you happen to know this, you're bound to have an experience like the one I've outlined above.
Why bother having this nice centralized system for installing software only to introduce such a large and glaring 'exception to the rule'? Why make the user have to wade through blog listings in order to find the recommended way of installing the latest version of the program they want to try out?
We need to create a better user experience of installing software in general. Perhaps what is needed is a new mechanism which wraps over apt and gives more informed choices to the user.
Just brainstorming here - let's create mapt-url. Clicking on a mapt-url will result in a window what will inform you of your choices regarding software versions, and trust.
Example:
"
You have selected to install banshee media player.
Would you prefer to:
a) install version 1.x (from Ubuntu repositories) -- current user rating 4/10 (read more)
b) install version 2.x (from untrusted repository - click *here* to check it's credentials) - current user rating 9/10 (read more)
