Add support for animations to the GNOME Panel
Written by ezekiel_000 the 14 Oct 08 at 23:35. Category: Graphics. Related to: Gnome. New
Another way of spicing up the GNOME Panel other than making it translucent and having a background image, would be to add support for animations to in the form of GIF files (and other animated images) to the Panel. For example it might be quite nice to have rippling water as a background to the panel or drifting clouds.

Different icons for Zips, Rars, Debs and other files opened in archive manager
Written by pepperpupper the 15 Oct 08 at 10:32. Category: Usability. Related to: Archive Manager. New
Currently, all files opened in archive manager shares the same icon. I think it would be nice if there was somewhat different icons for each file-type opened with this application. Doesn't have to be a huge difference, just some small visual indication whether it is a rar, zip or a deb file that is opened.

Remove "ubuntu-calendar" wallpapers package from official repositories
Written by verb3k the 6 Mar 08 at 18:21. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I don't know why ubuntu developers insist that this package remains there, but it's totally a bad idea to have such a package in an official repository, knowing that ubuntu is admitted in homes with children and offices of workers where such things are highly prohibited.

"Advanced User" button in Gnome
Written by FUX the 10 Oct 08 at 14:50. Category: Usability. Related to: Gnome. New
One of the most things I never liked in Gnome is that you can not configure the UI and other settings as you can in KDE. I have been using Gnome and KDE the last couple of years, most of the time parallel. KDE used to be too buggy, slow(er) compaired to Gnome, but it allways had many many good features and you could configure it more advanced than Gnome.

Now my idea is, to have the ability to press an "Advanced User" button in several applications. This would prevent novice users from distroying their computer and would help advanced users to tweak whatever the application is. I know this feature would not make sense in every application, but the ones you can only use in "advanced mode" by punching in the applets name plus some options, parameters etc. would make it less complicated.
This "Advanced User" button would be simular to the "Unlock" button some applications have.
I doubt that most of you will understand what I am on about, but try to consider it. How many times have you had an application wich you had to launch manually with several parameters and other options. Gnome is too "easy" for advanced users in my opinion.
I do not have an installed Ubuntu System on any of my computers right now, but I will set up a machine over the weekend and I will try to find some good examples and post them.

Compizconfig-settings-manager installed by default
Written by Fixman the 9 Oct 08 at 03:56. Category: Graphics. Related to: Compiz Advanced Settings (ccsm). New
Compiz Fusion is a great application, and most effects look awesome. However, it runs to 5% its capacity without compizconfig-settings-manager installed (unless you know how to configure it manually, thought that can be a pain in the ass). Thats why I think ccsm should be installed by default on Ubuntu for easier using of "other" plugins by new users.

EDIT: If you want simple-ccsm to be installed by default promote this idea, since they are pretty similar.
EDIT2: No, this will not make Ubuntu slower. Compiz Fusion is already installed by default since Gutsy, all I want is the configuration tool for Compiz (a very little app) to be installed.

Fork Gnome
Written by spyyder the 14 Mar 08 at 16:26. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
The Gnome team is not in touch with the average user. They take the "tried and true" route on the development patch. KDE is far too bloated and unstable. Usability had not improved and easy of use remains stagnant on both end. Ubuntu seeks to make linux for human beings, but constantly relies on outside projects to provide that functionality. We need a middle ground interface that is powerful, element, and useful. I want to see new ideas and interfaces, not recycled ones. Gnome is Desktop 1.0 and its time to move the interface forward.

Include Xorg-edit, a graphical editor for xorg.conf, by default on Ubuntu   forum
Written by kernel_script the 30 Sep 08 at 21:11. Category: Accessibility. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Include Xorg-edit, a GUI editor for xorg.conf, by default on Ubuntu.

I see a lot of people that don't have their monitor resolution set properly, and have to edit xorg.conf to do so.

If it comes by default, it will be a great and helpful tool for lay persons and beginners.

If it is not possible, at least, put it on the Ubuntu repositories.

Remove visual feedback from GUI password dialogues   forum
Written by aysiu the 15 Jul 08 at 01:33. Category: Security. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Since a lot of people seem to think that not showing visual feedback for password authentication (in the terminal, for example) is a security feature, let's remove visual feedback from the GUI, too.

See Idea #11118: Display *** for password in the terminal for more details:

Easier way to add url repositories on Synaptic
Written by nitrofurano the 27 Sep 08 at 15:40. Category: Installation. Related to: Synaptic package manager. Already implemented
Should be easier to add url repositories on Synaptic, instead of having to do 'sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list', and pray for this method working...

Developer comments
See System->Administration->Software Sources.

Support for apturl to add repositories was planned, but the security risk was deemed too high.

Brainstorm -idea clusters
Written by pepperpupper the 27 Sep 08 at 10:16. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Many ideas are the same, slightly related or concerns the same subject (without being obvious duplicates). Maybe there could be idea clusters within different categories. So if I select category "Gnome", I could choose among different clusters where all ideas that concerns basically the same subject are stored.

Similar to how you now can report duplicate, you could select "related to cluster" and only if there where none really related, you would have to create a new "idea cluster"

No Password-Reply ******
Written by GnuShi the 1 Mar 08 at 11:01. Category: Server. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
In most graphical applications, whenever some password is required like sudo and during login, the password is echoed like stars ******. Someone, who sits next to can see (yes of course, and hear), how many chars your secret phrase has. It would be better to not echo the number of characters.

Make Nautilus tabs freely transferable between windows by dragging
Written by Peter Frank the 16 Sep 08 at 19:09. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nautilus. New
The upcoming Intrepid Ibux release supports tabs in Nautilus. However, I would love to see an additional feature: allow tabs to dragged to another Nautilus window. This is a nice feature in Google Chrome browser. Why don't we copy it to Nautilus (and KDE's dolphin)?

Remove Ekiga, add Compiz Config Setting Manager
Written by days_of_ruin the 22 Jun 08 at 21:56. Category: Installation. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Very few people use ekiga smartphone and removing
would free up space for more stuff like compiz
config settings manager. Some people see the compiz
videos on youtube and shouldn't have to download
an app to enable them.

Add/Remove Programs and Synaptic Should Be Aptitude-Based
Written by stevec the 3 Mar 08 at 23:45. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
The package management of Debian-based distributions is by far the best available; even better than Mac OS X. It's the best part about using Debian-based systems.

All the documentation still suggests people use apt-get to install things, and Synaptic and Add/Remove Programs, to my knowledge, are based on apt.

The good thing about apt is that whenever there's missing dependencies it's smart enough to download and install them itself. The bad part is that once you've installed something, if you choose to remove it you can still be left with programs or libraries that were installed as dependencies but are no longer required.

The reason aptitude is better is because it remembers what gets installed as a dependency, and if you go to remove a program and it has a dependency that aptitude knows is no longer required by any program installed on the system, it'll remove that dependency program also.

Because of that I think making Synaptic and Add/Remove Programs based on aptitude instead of apt would be an improvement.

Canonical should support Rubuntu
Written by nitrofurano the 24 Sep 08 at 19:46. Category: Usability. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Since the KDE 4.1 from Kubuntu is so hard to use and configure, i'm starting to believe seriously Canonical should support Rubuntu as well.

Rubuntu would be an Ubuntu with RatPoison window manager, like Kubuntu now is using KDE 4.1

Since KDE 4.1 is so hard to use as RatPoison is, Canonical starting to suport Rubuntu makes a lot of sense...

Shutdown when tasks are done in Partition Editor (gparted)
Written by lordnoid the 24 Sep 08 at 18:07. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Gparted, Ubuntu's partition editor, operations can take a very long time.
To save power, it might be a good idea to have the option to shutdown the PC when all tasks are done, so you can leave the computer when resizing partitions.

Ubuntu look shoold be next releases priority !!!
Written by litamus the 24 Sep 08 at 00:06. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Let's be clear: Ubuntu is installed with a good theme..
BUT it isn't as good compared to Mac Os X theme or Vista, and it doesn't reflect it's huge capabilities...

to be completely honest with you, this look gives new users a feeling of a rustic and old operating system...
-- this is what many of my friends (Windows users) just said when I convinced them to install Ubuntu...

-- just ask yourself, do you use default theme??? did you download some nice icon pack or install stuff like Avant Window navigator... ect...

* I like Ubuntu project, and this situation isn't acceptable for me!!!

I'm not talking about copying ideas from other operating systems but we must think of adding a modern and original theme with new nicer colored icons and better looking windows.. ect..

THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT, Ubuntu use must be much more PLEASANT, especially for newbies !!!

Just think "commercial", the idea is to seduce new users..
I know that, for "confirmed" users, this isn't an issue, but it's a vital one for newbies!!!

Add gui tool to change sudo timeout   forum
Written by danbuter the 22 Sep 08 at 02:55. Category: Security. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
As discussed in the referred thread, the default sudo timeout is 15 minutes. This can be a security risk. Please add a gui tool so that people can adjust this timeout, even to zero if they want. Or maybe make it an option during install.
