Add package for new Adobe Flash 10 beta
Written by swegner the 16 May 08 at 17:22. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Adobe released a beta version of their Flash 10 plugin, and it's available from their website here:

http://download.macromedia.com/pub/labs/flashplayer10/flashplayer10_install_lin ux_051508.tar.gz

Since the current flash-nonfree package is already relatively unstable (esp. on AMD64), we should consider packing a flash-nonfree-10beta for this early release. Of course, the beta shouldn't replace the current version, but the option should be available.

The package should conflict with flash-nonfree so the two aren't installed simultaneously, and should do the work of automatically fetching the latest beta from Adobe.

Manual install instructions and other details here:
http://tombuntu.com/index.php/2008/05/16/test-drive-flash-player-10-beta-in-ubu ntu/

Add Shoutcast support in Rhythmbox
Written by RoaringPenguin the 1 Apr 08 at 16:36. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I would like to see support for Shoutcast Internet Radio stations added to Rhythmbox.

This is currently my favorite feature in Amarok, Rhythmbox's KDE equivalent. Rhythmbox's Internet Radio selection is rather pathetic in comparison and the current configuration forces me to hunt down the address of and add each of my favorite stations individually, rather than searching the entire station listing internally as with Amarok.

With proper MTP support being added with Hardy, I am finally able to use my MP3 player with Linux again. I have switched back to Rhythmbox, but find myself missing this feature. Perhaps this could be handled in a layout similar to the LastFM plugin?

Thank you.

Enable Nautilus to use tabs.

Nautilus is Ubuntu's default file management software. There is no reason why you should need to open countless Nautilus windows to manage your files. It is time to bring tabs from your web browser to your file browser.

Do not use Black Screen screensaver during installation
Written by webhamster the 18 Apr 08 at 20:05. Category: Installation. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I think it is very confusing that during installation, the screen suddenly becomes black. It would be much better if there would be at least a simple image, so that the screen does not look like the computer just crashed.

I have had a trouble getting my external hard drive to work on Ubuntu 7.10. It would be good to have it preinstalled so I dont have to force mounting commands into terminal.

Brasero - some improvements
Written by foe the 18 Apr 08 at 12:53. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Brasero is nice and getting better, but I have few improvements to suggest:
- Video DVD, there is no option for it and would be nice if it was implemented
- Integrity check. When you select this option, Brasero will include a checksum file in the media burnt. Perhaps the file should be stored in a .brasero folder in the home directory?
- There is no integrity check for burnt image files
- When burning an audio cd from mp3s the process takes forever, anything that can be done there?

Ubuntu needs a good manager processes to respond quickly and when system freezes
Written by eld1e6o the 7 Apr 08 at 06:35. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Ubuntu need a processes manager that will load quickly and thus be preloaded in memory to use it when I need it quickly, an process manager who always respond well light and have their "sleep" in the code to enable him to run in real time without harming the functioning of the machine to use it
That for me is essential because sometimes some software tilts and I have to wait forever to react, windows and even though it has many times the system becomes unstable be solved very quickly with the manager processes that possesses.
Ubuntu have one, but it doesn't meet this features
(preload, speed, reaction, response and high priority, etc)
It would be perfect to kill the process or lower the priority to be able to continue working normally while ending "freezes"
In ubuntu we can not act quickly drift which results in inefficient that can be solved easily in this way

Always leave enough resources to keep mouse and keyboard running smoothly
Written by steve196 the 7 Apr 08 at 09:19. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Often a process takes up so many resources, that it blocks input from the keyboard or mouse, or slows them to a crawl, so that i cannot even react to or stop the process.
I think, a certain amount of resources for keyboard and mouse should always be reserved, so that at least the system itself (for all apps this would be too much work) can nearly instantly ( less than 2 seconds, update mouse pointer at least every half a second) react to them. I think the cost in resources for this would be very tiny, since even very old computers had a smoothly running keyboard and mouse.

The only way to install Urban Terror on a Ubuntu machine is to manually install it. This is a very good game that supports Linux natively. I think Ubuntu should add it to the repository.

Sound to have VU meter or visual indication to show mic in is working.
Written by captainpugwash the 28 Mar 08 at 16:02. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
It drives me insane trying to diagnose if my sound card Microphone input is working correctly.

it would be great if I could have some kind of visual feed back like the old "VU" meters we used to have on old fashioned tape decks.

Getting skype to work or dealing with any "sound in" / "mic in" issues on Ubuntu has been a nightmare to trouble shoot. this would make it a bit easier.

Disable Screensaver while playing movies or slideshows
Written by Wiplash4 the 27 Mar 08 at 21:55. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. Already implemented
It is unnerving to touch buttons when the screensaver runs while a movie is playing.

The default media player, Totem, already does this. If an application does not do this then please file a bug with that application in Launchpad.

While ubuntu gets more user friendly for new users with every release, there are still a lot of times when users must open up a terminal to get a bit of work done. Istalling some packages if they use a loki installer for ex. Or doing some low level configuration to get that one piece of obscure hardware working. Why not make the shell experience more user friendly for people when they must use it. I'm talking better syntax highlighting so you know if you spelt a command or filename wrong. More complete tab completion for filenames and command line options. These are all features of Fish, the friendly interactive shell. I don't do shell scripting, but when I do need to use the CLI, fish makes thw experience much more painless.

Provide an official live 'gaming' repository

Many games feature the ability to play with other people. However, the first thing the game will check for is to see if it is currently up to date. When Ubuntu enters version freeze, the games fall out of date, and it can be harder to play them online without finding a 3rd party update or compiling it yourself (Freeciv, Scorched3D, and Battle for Wesnoth to name a few). This also creates issues when different distributions freeze at different times, so it can be hard to play with other Linux users.

Ubuntu should provide a repository for up to date games for games that will always need the latest version to play online.

Pause keyboard input if window appears while typing
Written by Vertelemming the 26 Mar 08 at 17:14. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
One thing that's always bothered me, no matter which OS I've been on, is the way I can be typing in one window when another program tosses up a notification or error which immediately gets closed because I just pressed space or enter. I propose a mechanism be developed by which keyboard input is temporarily paused or halted if a window appears when more than X number of keys is being pressed per ten seconds.

I realise the difficulties inherent in this; a daemon or service would eat up unnecessary CPU cycles, it's impractical to patch every program in existence to follow this behaviour, and most other ways of doing this have one argument against them or another. However, if this were presented as an opt-in behaviour, I believe it would benefit a fair percentage of people for a relatively small amount of coder output.

Clock should have voice or chime support like Mac OS
Written by Jason Quinn the 26 Mar 08 at 21:31. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
A feature I really like on Mac OS X is that there's an option to have a voice speak the time on the hour. It's great while at work to keep me on task. There should also be an option to chime instead of voice (think the church bell way of announcing time). It should be rather straightforward to implement this. In fact, why not have check buttons for "on the half hour" and "on the quarter hour" with corresponding sounds?

Create nice-looking Folder Icons or improve Hardy emblems
Written by ubunteando the 26 Mar 08 at 20:07. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I miss to have a "basic" collection of nice looking folder icons to use in my Home folder: Downloads, Music, Images, Movies...

Ubuntu has emblems, which are not so bad, but in Hardy the emblems look all alike... Its an orange circle with the image in white... Which makes it impossible to differentiate one from another... Either go back to colorful emblems like gutsy or implement folder icons which I think should be done!

Make Update Manager mention version of package
Written by Eldmannen the 26 Mar 08 at 15:42. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
When I use "Update Manager" to update the packages of my system, it mentions the name of the package and the size of the package.

But it does not mention the version of the package.

I want it to mention the version the package that is about to get installed.

Graphical Recovery Mode

When a user currently boots into the 'recovery mode' from GRUB, they are presented with a command-line interface with complete root privileges and no introduction. This is just not user-friendly by any definition.

With the introduction of bullet-proof X in 8.04, it should be possible to launch some sort of gui no matter what, so how about creating a guided recovery app (in the style of 'ubiquity-only') that goes something like this:

Welcome to the Ubuntu Recovery Helper.
-If you booted into this mode because booting Ubuntu normally doesn't work, press continue.
-If you have booted into this mode by accident, you can reboot your computer and choose the option to load Ubuntu normally.
-If you are an advanced user and would like to go straight to the command-line, press Advanced.
[REBOOT] [ADVANCED] [CONTINUE]

If they press continue:
-If you know approximately what is wrong with your PC, select it below and press Continue.
-If you don't know what is wrong, press I Don't Know.
[]Graphics Card or Monitor
[]Hard Disk
[]Sound
[]etc.
[BACK] [I DON'T KNOW] [CONTINUE]

Selecting Graphics Card or Monitor would launch the X.org configuration utility, with the additional option to 'Autodetect any display hardware changes' (runs "sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xorg-server" or whatever the exact code is). Selecting I Don't Know would launch the same prompt that the hardware database thingie uses, and when an error is reported would go to the appropriate item from the list above.

I'm not going to go through the entire thing, but I'm sure you get the idea. At the moment, Windows recovery mode is just an admin desktop, and Ubuntu is command-line. We're currently behind, but implementing something like this would put us years ahead. It would also make a great 'important feature' for 8.10 (like compiz-fusion was for 7.10).
