2D Fighter   forum
Written by nami the 11 Jun 08 at 09:12. Category: Gaming. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
2DFighter does not work with linux. It does not work via wine either because apparently wine does not support .NET 3.5.

Can we please have 2DFighter for linux or some sort of equivalent which allows us to connect to the same network so we can challenge windows users?

A new partition type for games
Written by kd7tck@msn.com the 7 Jun 08 at 19:16. Category: Gaming. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
There are beginning to be enough games available for the linux platform, that having a separate partition for all of them might be a good idea. This new type of partition would be designed with speed in mind. Maybe a journaling system that can defragment and only do so when nothing else is going on in the system. Another simpler method might just be to use a ext4 file system for the game partition.

Shockwave/other plugins
Written by Grim Tuesday the 18 Jun 08 at 21:48. Category: Gaming. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I think that Ubuntu should have support for the shock wave plug in. At least, someone could make a free plugin that plays shock wave games

add a new VT OS link - for gamers -
Written by mitcoes the 10 Jun 08 at 12:17. Category: Gaming. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
With KVM or Xen it is not easy to configure a new OS.
It should be a good idea to make a easy script to install virtualized Operating Systems.

For gamers wine is not enough.

But with gamers machines, the performance loose for using KVM (or XEN) virtualized, is similar to the gain of not have to put antivirus software.

Then a script that only asks you for a ISO or a CD/DVD for installation and generate after it a link that open that OS would be a great idea for gamers to migrate to Ubuntu.

As a marketing tool a installation with W98se, Xp and Vista, with a youtube video, and sysmarks tests native with antivirus and KVM VT without antivirus would be great.

This kind of installation would make gamers to prove opengel games natively under Linux, and they will choose it. Then more games would be provided natively for Linux.

"add and remove" new area of recent programs
Written by newhuntwat the 26 Jun 08 at 09:09. Category: Installation. Related to: Add/Remove program dialog. New
english:

to add/remove ... has a new sector in which appear all new programs that appear. thus we can see if there are new programs on the list without having to search it, because they are housed in the new sector. thus does not mix the old with new programs.

but if it is not possible, at least mark with bold new programs or with blue or red

(I'm from spain, sorry for my bad english)

Better Wine integration

I think more Windows users would try out Ubuntu if they could just double click an .exe file instead of going into a command prompt, browsing to the folder and then typing "wine *.exe" to install the program.

I like how Ubuntu adds shortcuts on the desktop and the "start menu" after you install the program making it easy to run but installing Windows software needs to be easier.

When setting the mouse as left handed, use a 'left-handed' pointer also
Written by kenden the 18 Apr 08 at 16:24. Category: Accessibility. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
When the mouse is set as default (right-handed mouse), the mouse pointer points to the left, like a right arm aiming.

So, when the mouse is set as Left-handed, the pointer should point to the right, like a left arm aiming.

It feels strange to have the pointer in the 'wrong direction' when using the mouse with the left hand!

Better cached thumbnails manager
Written by StarEnd the 18 Apr 08 at 12:34. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Using option "preview" for multimedia files (images, videos, documents), so much thumbnails were cached into hidden folder .thumbnail (in home).

After some time, this folder become very big, containing so much files. I think that could be a nice idea to implement a GUI option to clear the content of this folder, maybe with an option for auto-cleaning this folder by a fixed period (1 week for example!).

Thanks for your hard work!

Kernel upgrades should be released only when graph. drivers update is ready
Written by laervian the 7 Apr 08 at 13:35. Category: Hardware support. Related to: Nothing/Others. Already implemented
This has happened to me many times, and just today it came to bite a friend of mine who was earnestly giving a try to Ubuntu...and renounced after losing his graphical interface except for bulletx. The problem is simple: sometimes kernel updates are released hours or even days before the restricted drivers packages are updated too (read: recompiled and packaged for new kernel). As a result, obviously, when the system is restarted the graphical driver does not function anymore.
And I am sure that it can happen also with other drivers.

The solution? One of two; either:

the kernel packages are completely held back until ANY AND ALL restricted drivers packages are updated (which is already done in Hardy, to be honest, considering that so far I have done three or four kernel updates and alwyas I saw in contemporary a new, repckaged nvidia-glx-new), or:

the update-manager program should check if any restricted drivers are installed, check if they are up-to-date with the kernel update, and in case they are not, blacklist the kernel updates until such a time when updating is secure.

I think this feature is quite a must; most users in the future are not even going to check what they are going to update at all; and it is sure to turn many people off Ubuntu if they suddenly find their boxes without graphical, or network (potentially even worse considering we have bulletproof X!) support.

A wallpapers repository

I think Ubuntu should incorporate a repository with a collection of wallpapers. Even should include some wallpapers in the default installation.

Wine-doors is a great program to works alongside with Wine, with scripts to help in the installation of windows programs, I think it would be very usefull if it were included in the repositories...

Visually Show How Disk Space is Being Utilized
Written by brokencrystal the 1 Apr 08 at 04:58. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Build in a disk space usage manager that shows how disk space is being utilized, and gives a visual report of disk health like DiskView does. It could be included as a plugin in Nautilus.

Remember the name of hard drives in /media/
Written by wiberg the 31 Mar 08 at 11:24. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
When you use multiple USB hard drives you might know the problem: you unplugged one of them and rebooted. Now some drives, even non-USB drives, have changed their names e.g. from "disk-2" to "disk-1". Sounds like no biggie, but suddenly some programs don't find their files anymore and all folder settings and thumbnails are gone.
Idea: Have Ubuntu remember the drives by their unique ID or something and issue the same name whenever it's plugged in.

Greetings
wiberg

Download dependencies option on packages.ubuntu.com
Written by soulcheck the 26 Mar 08 at 12:18. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
It would be nice to have an option to download a desired package along with it dependencies on packages.ubuntu.com (I mean using browser, not a package manager)

Sure, aptitude, synaptic or whaterever else is a better way to manage mackages, but with no internet connection this way could be faster.

Obviously choosing all dependencies without any filtering would cause to download a big part of dependency tree, so this option could accept some kind of list of packages which user already has installed on his system as input.

In Konqueror there is the right-click option saying "Copy To" / "Move To" - would be great to have that implemented in Nautilus.

ONE Window Gimp
Written by maknu the 26 Mar 08 at 21:17. Category: Graphics. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Gimp is a great graphics editor we all know. Congratulations to all developpers!

My Idea:
- Adding a Selection for "Using Gimp in one Window"

IMPORTANT
- That should NOT be default, but an option, which doesn't go in trouble for users liking this multi window management with its advantages!

I guess that more than 20% of the gimp users where really happy for this important feature. I know that Gimpshop and other Plugins are available, but this couldn't be the end solution. Gimp should bring this "little" feature with it in future! Thanks!
