Disconnect wifi through Network Manager

Right now Network Manager doesn't give you an option to disconnect from a Wireless Network.
Your options are to connect to a different wireless network or drop to the console to disconnect.
It would be faster and easier to be able to disconnect using the same application you used to connect.
When you click on Network Manager a menu shows up with a list of wireless networks and the following options:
"Connect to other wireless networks..."
"Create new wireless network..."
"Manual configuration..."
My idea is to put the option "Disconnect from Wireless Network" on that menu.
Clicking this option would also add the network to a blacklist so that it won't automatically reconnect unless you connect manually to it.
UPDATE:
This idea has been actually implemented.
On the newer releases of Network manager, you can remove a wireless network by right clicking on the network manager icon on the notification area, and then clicking on "Edit wireless networks...".
A window will pop up where you can remove the networks you don't want to connect to.

At the moment it's possible to manage traditional wired and WiFi connections using Network Manager. To connect via a modem, a 3G/GPRS card, over bluetooth to a cell phone or via USB to another device requires that the user installs extra packages, and does a fair amount of configuration that isn't found in Network Manager.
A single unified tool should be provided which allows the user to connect to a network (or internet) via any supported method. It would also be useful to provide an extension to this tool to manage firewall rules and network connection sharing.

I am looking at the new Power Manager of Ubuntu 8.04, I am missing my ability to adjust the amount that when unplugged my screen brightness dims by. So my thought was adding an Advanced button would be a good idea. A place where we can find power features like the dim control, the battery saving techniques listed already as ideas, the power scheme idea, and anything else that is an advanced power setting. This way we can have the ease of control and configurability(firefox tells me this is not a word) while still making the power manager easy to use for the average user that doesn't know or care that there are other settings there. And give people the ability to tell their computer how they want it to act. I for one miss the ability to set how much it dims from 7.10.

Do not activate Data Crawlers per default

Today I find myself in this position:
My Kubuntu System was roaring and terrible slow. I was wondering: “Did something go wrong during the upgrade?” One look in “top” thought me it was a daemon a “pinot” daemon. An other Search tool.... I just deinstalled “Strigi”! Many people will not look up what is using their resources they just will say: “ubuntu is slow”. People who want to use a Search Tool are able to activate it! So:
Please do not activate Data Crawlers per default!
Developer comments
Tracker is shipped in Ubuntu and not turned on by default.
Strigi is shipped in Kubuntu and not turned on by default.
Pinot is in universe and not installed by default at all, so maybe you installed that at some point.

H.264 Decoder with SMP Support up to 4 Cores

In Windows, we have CoreAVC that has this support. But linux doesn't have this yet, which makes it impossible to watch 1080p h.264 content back without the video being jerky due to one core not being able to handle the decoding.
I know Ubuntu uses ffmpeg to do the decoding of h.264 video, but that needs SMP support to compete against Windows and its CoreAVC h.264 decoder. This is something I think MythTV can use too.

It's great Memtest86+ comes with Ubuntu. It may help people who get problems with the LiveCD, and instead of saying Ubuntu sucks, this tool shows that they hardware is damaged.
However, the version of Memtest86+ used is quite old. The newest 2.01 supports the latest hardware and I see no reason why it should'nt be updated.
Please bring latest Memtest86+ with Intrepid Ibex!

Samba (client) need to be truly transparent layer

for any application it should be completely the same: to access local file, or to access file on shared resource (samba).
at the moment, Totem plays all (lets say that all) local video files. but it plays only half of those files that are on remote machine accessed through samba.
MPlayer plays those remote files which Totem refuses to play, but MPLayer throws errors if you try to seek within those files.
on windows there is never any diference (just a lag depending on the bandwidth) for any application if you use local file or remote.
and it is definitely problem on the machine with samba client side but not on samba server side: i have hosted lots of video files on samba server and i play them all from windows without any problems, but i get described experience when i try to watch same files from ubuntu.
i guess this is not an easy fix (samba or filesystem interface or even kernel should be fundamentally reworked) but sooner or later this should be fixed (better sooner).

Compiz should fully support mutiple workspaces

Currently, Compiz works well with the workspace switcher and so forth. However, there are two features missing that would increase Compiz's integration with multiple workspaces. (If I'm missing something big, feel free to add it in comments!)
1) Compiz supports multiple wallpapers (one per workspace) but Nautilus doesn't, meaning that multiple backgrounds is only possible if you disable Nautilus from drawing the desktop. There are patches to this online... couldn't this feature be added to make Nautilus and Compiz work together more nicely?
2) Gnome-panel only refreshes the buttons for minimized windows after Compiz's animations have finished. This may seem like a minor glitch, but if you are used to switching workspaces frequently, it would be very useful to have each workspace's window button panel reflect the windows on that screen, not the screen you are coming from - especially for users of the desktop cube.

This becomes especially useful with Hardy, which gives unrecognizable names to the unnamed partitions like "100 GB media" etc. For example right-click on the partition and bring up it's options, where you can change the label.

Make Ubuntu more efficient with screen real-estate

One thing that I noticed when I tried Ubuntu for the first time, coming from Windows, is that you have less space on your screen because of some certain settings. For example, window buttons are very large, menus (file, edit, view, etc) in windows are also bigger, possibly because Ubuntu uses a bigger font... I notice this the most in Firefox, where the toolbars at the top of the window take up about 1.5 times more space than the equivalent in Windows.
I would really like the Ubuntu developers to work on making toolbars, etc. take up less space and thus allow more space for the real important parts of the window, which is the content, whether that is a website you are viewing, the "sheet of paper" in a word processor, or anything else.
The reason for the larger menus in Ubuntu may be because of accessibility needs, but for the ordinary, non-disabled user, it doesn't make sense to give them less working space on their desktop.

Implement 'powertop' suggestions by default

At least when running on a laptop/on battery (but it would be good for a desktop on AC power too) it would be good to by default turn on all the things that powertop suggests. e.g. ALSA power save mode, increased writeback time, hald-addon-storage polling for the CD drive, USB autosuspend.

Install sensors by default in hardy

Most people aren't even aware of the existence of libsensors-applet-plugin, lm-sensors, hddtemp, libsensors4, smartmontools, etc. People who run Linux tend to be more likely than the average to be interested in the health of their hardware. Therefore these things should be available by default.
(Clarification regarding Hardware Sensor Monitor applet: *available* != *included+configured* in the default desktop)
Suggestion to interested readers:
((hit enter for prompts except for adding "yes" in install modules by default))
$ sudo apt-get install libsensors-applet-plugin0
$ sudo sensors-detect
Then right click on your gnome panel an select "Add to panel"->"Hardware Sensors Monitor" & "CPU Frequency scaling monitor".
My primary complaint is that this sensors monitoring applet is not even available unless you install the aforementioned packages.
