SMIL Player
Written by nosselrahc the 3 Mar 08 at 10:24. Global category: Multimedia. Not an idea
Hello,

Create and add an 'Ambulant' package in Ubuntu. Ambulant is a SMIL player.
The SMIL standard is defined by the W3C. It's a XLM format allowing to make presentations, slideshows, to mix image, video, audio, text, it is encapsulable in the html or xhtml (for example, it's used for the MMS).

Solution #2: Support SMIL players and authoring tools as alternatives to Flash and Silverligh
Written by lorenzosu the 11 Mar 09 at 13:51.
Ubuntu is still too much dependednt on closed formats esepcially for web (i.e. flash and soon MS Silverlight).

Open alternatives exist: SMIL is an open XML-based rich-media format developed by W3C
http://www.w3.org/AudioVideo/
It could potentially replace flash in 90% of its applications; yet if no major effort is put in its spread to content creators, web developers and communities, no one will use it.
An open source, cross-platform player and firefox plug-in for SMIL 3.0 already exists: the Ambulant player and firefox plug-in ( http://www.ambulantplayer.org/ ) is an example.

Multiple Instance in Totem
Written by geojorg the 5 Jun 08 at 20:44. Global category: Multimedia. New
I would love to open more than one instance of totem to reproduce different videos at the same time, this is present in VLC and MPLAYER why can't totem have multiple instance if it is the main multimedia player in Ubuntu.

Display volume labels in the Ubuntu installer
Written by Eldmannen the 24 May 08 at 17:27. Global category: Installation. New
Many new users are confused by device names such as /dev/sda1, /dev/sdb5, /dev/hda2, /dev/hdc4, etc.

So I propose to show volume labels (partition names) in the installer, to make it easier for users who install Ubuntu to know which partition they are installing on.

Screenshots:
* Before
* After

This will make it clearer and easier to install Ubuntu without any mistakes being done which might result in that a new user accidentally looses valuable data.

Selected solution (#3): 'dar' archives in deb packages
Written by decaf the 19 Jan 11 at 17:24.
Dar (http://dar.linux.free.fr/) format is designed for taking backups on randomly accessible storage. Dar provides an index to individually compressed or directly stored files in archive. There is a very stable and featureful library available to manipulate and merge dar files. Using this format as data part of deb files has advantages:

Downloading only necessary parts of packages is possible, avoiding requirement of delta files. We already have an md5sums list in header, map of files in the archive can be merged with this list.

Already compressed files will not be compressed again, this wastes time. And also we can get full performance of multicore cpus while compressing and extracting archives.

Selected solution (#4): Download a diff and apply it to an old package file.
Written by jv13613 the 3 Feb 11 at 17:16.
Update manager should check the apt cache directory for an older version of the package, then if one exist it should download a diff of the new package file. Then it will apply the diff to the old package file to convert it to the new package file. The old file should also be renamed to the current version.

Selected solution (#6): Use rsync to transport update-files
Written by A.Kielkopf the 16 May 11 at 12:20.
Rsync is a well known and stable solution which could be adaptet to this. With this you wouldn´t need deltafiles. Rsync does automatic deltatransfer

Rsync can automatic compress/decompress(-z) and is able to use secure connections. Rsync works for binarys as good as for textfiles.

It can speed up the transfer (knowing the old local files) without deleting the old files (-y). So you are able to use the same pre/post installscripts as before.

Rsync is able to handle situations where some of the local expected files are not existing (deletet) or broken.

Allow Places AND Tree mode in Nautilus left panel
Written by carpii the 20 Sep 08 at 12:08. Related project: Nautilus. Not an idea
For the side pane in Nautilus, you can choose between places (bookmarks) or Tree view (directory hierarchy).

Id like to be able to use Tree view, but also have some bookmarks shown.

Tree mode shows 'Home Folder', and then 'File System' as collapsible nodes. Perhaps a new 'Places' node could be added, which can then be expanded to show all the places youd normally see in Places mode.

Nautilus - separation of files and folders
Written by jaimeaq the 25 May 08 at 07:59. Global category: Look and Feel. Not an idea
In icon view, things sometimes get a little bit cluttered and confusing in nautilus. I thought it would be helpful to (optionally) visually separate files and folders to make navigation easier.

Screenshot using "PrtScn" should allow saving in various formats not just PNG
Written by jsereno the 9 Jun 08 at 10:14. Global category: Graphics. Not an idea
Now this is probably subject to free formats etc, but the Print Screen screenshot application presently only allows saving in PNG format. This is great and all, but it would also be great to be able to save in other formats without needing to load up the GIMP every time.

Also, a checkbox option to create a thumbnail image file along with the screenshot (say, 160 x 128 or user-configurable) would be hugely beneficial and could be saved with a simple "_thumb" extension to the filename, eg:

Screenshot_thumb.png

Would save many minutes of work for those who do lots of illustrated documentation sites!

Brainstorm: Code idea text to be black, not default
Written by Warbo the 26 Apr 08 at 13:29. Related project: brainstorm.ubuntu.com. Implemented
On the Brainstorm site a lot of text is set to the default system colour, but the backgrounds are coded to be light colours like white. For people who have light text by default (eg. white-on-black themes) this can make the site unreadable without selecting all of the text.

Here is an example of what Brainstorm looks like using my theme http://www.freewebs.com/chriswarbo/Temporary/Pictures/brainstorm%2Dunreadable.j pg [take away the space near the end,Brainstorm is mutilating my URLs :( ] (but this theme is has dark text compared to others)

Please fix this by specifically coding the site to use black text, rather than assuming everyone uses black as default.

Thanks :)

Better monitor support and configuration tools
Written by No0ne the 29 Feb 08 at 00:37. Global category: Graphics. Implemented
Better way to set monitor resolution and refresh rate. Majority of the new monitors are LCD type. User should be able to specify the native resolution and refresh rate during install.

Then Ubuntu/X must do WHATEVER it takes to stick to that resolution and refresh rate.

In case of multi-monitor setups, must be able to specify the configuration at time of installation.

Also, the login GUI must use same resolution as X. Why different resolutions?

Rant:
I have nVidia NVS440 card with Viewsonic VP2290b monitor. Video card must be set to 1920x1200 @13Hz or @41Hz refresh rate for each of it's four outputs. Desktop must be arranged in 2x2 matrix. Then monitor displays 3840x2400 @13Hz or @41Hz.

This worked very well in Ubuntu 6.06. Installed Ubuntu 7.04 and ended up with something like 800x480, even with nVidia binary drivers. Tweaked xorg.conf for weeks to get this to work. BulletProofX kept messing with my hand crafted xorg.conf file; which did work with 6.06. Eventually gave up and started using Windaz again :-( Will try again when frustration level has come down.

Make option for VPN to autoconnect at startup
Written by Nxx the 19 Jun 08 at 03:08. Global category: Internet & Networking. New
I just suggest to make an option to automatically restore VPN connections after reboot. It is quite annoying after each reboot restore the connections manually.
