If someone is using a dark theme with Ubuntu, he will probably see all the input boxes and buttons filled with dark colours. This should be fixed, not everybody uses the default light theme.
Currently network manager can assure you that you're connected to a network, but if you want to be sure that that network is supplying you with the internet, you have to go check it for yourself. I propose some kind of indicator in the notification area that indicates access to, say, the ubuntu website.
In addition to simple broken connections, this would be useful when using public wifi that requires a logon.

Not an idea
Quicksilver is an excellent application on the Mac and GnomeDo is a valiant effort to mimic its success. I think that some spit and polish could bring GnomeDo to a ballpark of the usability of QS. I cant live without it on the Mac and its just a hinderance in the GnomeDo incarnation.

When triing to access bad-burned CD or an FTP site, connected by a weak link, Nautilus temporarily hangs. You cannot click icons and even the contents of the Nautilus' windows not refreshed, so they display garbage. It would be much nicier if such operations were performed in a separate tread than the user interface-related stuff. The contents of the window can display "Please wait, operation is being performed" or show a clock image instead of garbage that is displayed now.
The Windows Explorer show the same problematic behavior, but even worse in that it also incorporates the taskbar in the same tread, so when stuck with file operations, even the taskbar is not responsive.

Won't implement
Gnome needs a revoultion. Ubuntu uses Gnome.
Canonical could help the Gnome3-developers e.g. with money, tips, pc-resources or something else to speed up the development and to create a better Gnome3-release.
(KDE4 has much more features than Gnome, it is faster and looks better (my oppinion). Also it uses the powerful Qt4 as widgetset that is better than GTK+ at time. Gnome is going to leave behind KDE)
[edit] I dont't say that any DE is better, but Gnome needs help and Ubuntu primary uses Gnome. KDE4 is a great DE without help from the Ubuntu developers. [/edit]

For my personal use, the menubar is a waste of space now that i barely use it, would be nice to have an option to hide it (of course not hidden on default installation).
here is an example of what i did with my firefox with an extension:

Wouldn't it be great to be able to command the system via a webcam gestures just like in movies (such as Minority Report not to quote it)
This is feasible : closed-source Linux implementations already exist, ant it would be an innovative asset over Windows and MacOSX.
