Do not set the Ubuntu CD-ROM as a Default Repository for the Synaptic
Written by Iamreck the 6 Apr 08 at 04:45. Category: Installation. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I found it very frustrating when I first got into Ubuntu, and was looking around at the Packages to install, that I had to have the installation CD in my computer. Especially since it was a laptop and I didn't have my CD Drive in.

I eventually found out how to remove it as a repository source.

It should not be set as default, or perhaps, if it isn't there, Synaptic should go and look on the internet. Which it doesn't.

Commercial Version of Ubuntu
Written by spacejesus the 12 Mar 08 at 15:19. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
How about offering a commercial pay-for version of Ubuntu in addition to the regular versions? This could be a download option and a shippit offering. It could include the following:
1. Licensed codecs from fluendo or others.
2. An Ubuntu flavour of Crossover-Office / Cedega
3. Introductory support from Canonical

I think this would serve at least 3 purposes. Firstly it would be useful for people to feel comfortable using proprietary codecs in certain countries where this is a problem. Secondly, some people would be more likely to adopt linux/ubuntu if they have to pay for it.Psychologically the idea that something is better because it costs more is a very real phenomenon. Thirdly, I see this as a good way for Ubuntu/Canonical to generate funds and (gasp!)profits. I believe this is important for Ubuntu's medium-term success and is very important in tackling Bug #1. The introductory support offer would be a good way of establishing long-term support relationships with clients.By the way are any of my above ideas in violation of the GPL, I'm not sure...

Scibuntu: Ubuntu for Scientists
Written by Arioch the 12 Mar 08 at 09:09. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I work in Science. What about a fully featured flavour of Ubuntu filled with computational soft, programing tools, graphical representation capabilities, scientific text editing, publication database control...etc

That would make scientists life much more easy and would promote migration from W$ and OS systems to Ubuntu.

Temptative name: Scibuntu--Linux for Scientists

How about a game mode that users can run that exits Gnome/KDE and runs a game. Once the game is done Gnome/KDE return as normal.

"Rejected" Flag For Bad Ideas
Written by EduardoWillians the 12 Mar 08 at 02:37. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
If an idea is just bad, close votation for it and mark with "rejected". E.g.: "Close Ubuntu source". This is obviously bad, so close votation and mark as "rejected".

autokill user processes when the system becomes unusably slow to avoid a freeze
Written by madjr the 11 Mar 08 at 08:10. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
once it kills the crashing or resource hog "user started" process and the system becomes stable again, a message pops up letting you know that "X" application was forced quit to avoid a total system halt.

by "user process" i mean nothing important for the system to function.

documents should be auto-saved in a temp file to recover later.

This is very important, because you would loose everything anyway if your system freezes up and you have to *force* reboot (with the reboot button).

Ubuntu is stable, but some apps can halt the entire system (particularly flash, wine, openoffice, some games or anything that uses a good amount of resources) specially if they crash and stay in memory like i explained in this other entry:

Allow deletion of users own ideas
Written by days_of_ruin the 11 Mar 08 at 22:35. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
So you make a bad idea that everyone hates.
After awhile it clogs up your "my ideas" page
plus there is no reason to waste space on the servers.

release hardy 8.04 in april and later hardy-lts 8.04.1 in june
Written by gebi the 11 Mar 08 at 19:52. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Heron is needed to be "Hardy".
But with this tight release schedule, I have my concerns on that.
Beside the excellent work of the developers, too many bugs will be open until 24. April.
As suggestion:
Release Hardy on 24. April and on 5. June 8.04.1 as Hard-LTS.

In this way, early adopters can use hardy on time and LTS
users get a polished version a little bit later.

Create a icon to click and vote as "already implemented.
When we reach a certain number of votes like this. The idea is automatically marked as "done".

Start with a simple user interface
Written by shawndream the 29 Feb 08 at 15:21. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
It's easy for anyone who likes complicated interfaces to hit an "advanced interface" option and go to a desktop with multiple start bars at top and bottom and menus and desktop pagers.

It is not symmetrically easy for a basic computer user to find out how to make their interface more simple.

Thus, the initial interface for most installs should begin with a 10 foot, wii like, gOS style, matchbox like one window at a time, one task at a time interface that all users will find intuitive.

My favorite interface would blend some current genres to give them a taste of all.

Whatever app or screen they are on should fill the screen at all times, unless they specifically request to use it split screen with another app.

Any Modal box that pops up requiring them to do something to continue should be centered in a translucent grey haze covering what they were doing so they know they must address that issue first.

A big fat bar should go across the top of the screen, with the icon of their current application or window on the far left (clicking it provides the start menu, and options like "See Desktop (minimize)", and "Complicated Interface"). Then, along the top as you head right, large colorful icons of other, minimized active applications, then smaller grey icons of common applications not in use yet in a nice dock. Then a clock widget (and let them add others, like bluetooth) and finally a big bold X which gives a menu (Close current Window (default if they just hit and let go), Change User, Shut down, etc).

Wii and the EE prove there is a hunger for the simple and easy to use, even among people who can use the complicated.

The icon for the application they are currently using

Create and Ubuntu Service Pack (SP) like Microsoft Windows
Written by felixcorrales the 11 Mar 08 at 17:18. Category: Installation. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Please create and Ubuntu Service Pack (SP1, SP2, etc) like MS Windows.

If the user have to install Ubuntu, and there are a lot of updates, it will be easier to download an Ubuntu Service Pack (SP) with all the new updates, fixed bugs, etc.

Also it is very helpful for an IT team when they have to install or reinstall Ubuntu into several machines.

Regards

Felix

Change default archive type to .zip when compressing a file (in file roller)
Written by tomatz the 10 Mar 08 at 20:43. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
In my opinion this would be a more cross platform solution and would also be less confusing to new users. Also it would be a good idea if archives could be opened in nautilus as a regular folder would be (the latter is a duplicate idea but i cant find the post). Personally I prefer the tar.bz2 format but I must admit most files i compress are in .zip format.

FIVE reasons for each idea
Written by programad the 11 Mar 08 at 12:38. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
People should give us five reason for that idea.
We should have individual vote for the five reasons, and the idea only gets a positive vote if more than 3 reasons have positive vote.

configurable default keyboard shortcuts
Written by letronje the 11 Mar 08 at 14:12. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
This is particularly important for users who use both windows & linux.

For e.g. In Windows,

Super+E is the shortcut to open windows explorer.
Ctrl+Alt+Del gives the task manager
Super+D shows desktop

Gnome can use the same shortcuts as default so that the user doesn't have to remember two different sets of shortcuts. This could be available as an option during ubuntu install.

Super+E => starts default file browser(nautilus)
Ctrl+Alt+Del => starts gnome system monitor
Super+D => Shows Desktop

I had to use gconf-editor to enable these common shortcuts.

Less screensavers
Written by programad the 11 Mar 08 at 15:24. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Actually, we have 5 wallpapers, 9 themes and 80+ SCREENSAVERS!!!

WHAT THE HELL!

Who need that amount of screensavers?

I think we should vote five to the default installation, and the other ones comes with a optional package?

Isn't gnome "keep it simple"?

For me just a "dim screen" is enough for default.
