Provide a web service to convert files to open formats

As I understand, using closed codecs literally means breaking the law even while playing legal media in some countries. So, the current situation with Ubuntu is full of hypocrisy. Ubuntu's CD doesn't include illegal software, but every user would likely download and install it right after the installation is through. Fluendo codecs are an alternative, but a weak one.
Another point, is that the user is forced to use OpenOffice just because other products can't work with MS formats well. This is also inconvenient, since there are some lightweight solutions that can work with OASIS ODF and thus allow user to do all the basic tasks. And, after all, Office 2003 formats aren't supported even by OpenOffice at the moment.
Finally, the archive formats - rar, ace, arj, which also could be converted to zip or tar.gz2 or whatever.
So here is my suggestion on how to promote open technologies.
At the moment, there are already some web services to convert documents (or even music) from one format to another. For example, http://koolwire.com
So, what I am talking about, is a web-service, that would allow to convert audio files to OGG Vorbis and FLAC, video to OGG Theora, Microsoft Office files to OASIS ODF (and PDF, in case the conversion cannot be done well for some files). And it would be very nice, if the service would be integrated into the user's environment. So the software necessary for conversion would be installed only on those servers, which can be located in countries where patent issues are not a problem.
Probably, this initiative requires some really mighty servers, but I guess that this can be done on behalf of the Open Source community on the whole, not just Ubuntu/Canonical, so the funds necessary would be raised and the service will be free of charge. After all it's a real opprotunity to promote free standarts.

All the packages in the software repository should include a URL hyperlink to the official website of the software.
So when you read about the software, you can click on the link to get to the official homepage, for more information.
Developer comments
This is in progress: The latest packaging rules explicitly ask to add the homepage URL of the software to the package. You can already see the homepage URL of some packages in Hardy Heron via the "Add/Remove applications" program.

Documents preview should be rendered better

Today I've noticed one thing: an icon of the pdf (for example) file on the desktop is represented as a preview of it's first page. The point is, that if I try to resize the icon to its maximum, the text won't be readeable, since the preview is rendered terribly. Please fix it!

Just because Ubuntu is now released does not mean that bugs shouldn't be uploaded into the Update Manager as rigorously as they were during the month before April 24th! Hardy is still buggy, so I think that the entire 6 months between Hardy and Ibex should continue that trend of HARDINESS. It should fit its definition! Keep getting stronger and stronger.
I've got "ubuntu" and "hardy heron" on google-alerts, so I can read all the latest blog posts and news articles that are coming up lately. There's a lot of critisms. I recommend we address those criticisms thoroughly and completely in the next 6 months, and I mean, address them tirelessly and rigorously.
There needs to be a way in which we can monitor all the complaints, criticisms, etc. in one place so that they're in a database, easily accessible. Meaning, can we consolidate the critiques that show up in the blogosphere, ubuntuforums, brainstorm and launchpad? Maybe something similar to ubuntustats.com.
What do ya'll think?

We currently have full support for ACPI 1.0 and some support for ACPI 2.0.
We should get full support for ACPI 2.0 and also try to get full support for ACPI 3.0b.
ACPI ( Advanced Configuration and Power Interface) is an open industry standard that defines common interfaces for hardware recognition, motherboard and device configuration and power management.

Use upstream translations

Please make it possible to - at least optionally - use the translations provided by upstream, e.g. GNOME and KDE. Their translators do a very good job at producing high-quality, consistent translations. It's a shame that these got replaced by lesser quality suggestions from Rosetta in the past, or are still stuck in Rosetta for several months.
I respect if you insist on using your Launchpad and Rosetta platform for translations, but please at least offer a way to use the translations from upstream. What about "language-pack-XX-upstream"?

Don't limit deviantart competition to wallpapers only!
|
|

There has been some confusion, but to clarify this brainstorm:
There is an official deviantart "theme" competition which requests new wallpapers and allows new themes to be inside the submission. However, there are two issues:
1) the contest requires the construction of a wallpaper
2) themes and mockups are ungraded and unacknowledged.
This brainstorm argues two amendments:
1)Mockups-only submissions with previous ubuntu wallpapers should be allowed. Wallpapers should not be required. Mockups shouldn't have to be GTK themes.
2)Even if only wallpapers get prizes, there should be a best-mockup recognition award to the best non-wallpaper aspect of submissions. (arguably, themes are harder to judge than wallpapers.)
This would allowed skilled UI designers who are unskilled artists to compete to win consideration by the ubuntu team. I'd like to see mockups of theme ideas that are abstract and un-artistic, like https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/Hardy/Alternate/round_edge , be able to be in the running for this competition. We want to improve the ubuntu look and feel, not just reskin it.
Sorry for the confusion. Here's the original brainstorm text:
Recently, a brainstorm idea was created for a DeviantArt theme mock-up competition for Ubuntu 8.10. It was accepted, but canonical changed the competition's scope from themes to just wallpapers only.
There's a great deal of interest by the general ubuntu art community to create a new theme for ubuntu, as seen by the Hardy incoming "alternate looks" page, yet this competition was changed from its original scope to a far less interesting scope.

If i want to share the "look and feel" of my desktop with someone else, i have to send many different files: wallpapers, gtk-engines, gtk-themes, metacity themes, iconpacks, screenlets and so on.
I would like to press an "export look and feel"-button to get a file with all the look-and-feel-related stuff included, so that i can reproduce my complete look and feel on another machine.

As far as I understand, when shutting down, Usplash still flickers a moment. In any case, for Xubuntu and Kubuntu (and perhaps other derivatives too), the Usplash still isn't displayed during the full shutdown. If this is possible without being a very hackish solution, it'd be awesome.

Prevent applications from stealing focus

I'm constantly frustrated by applications stealing my focus. There should be some way for me to ensure that when I begin typing somewhere, an overzealous application will never pop up in front of what I'm working on.
If an application needs my attention, it's task bar button should simply pulse so I can turn my attention to it when I'm ready. Pidgin does this; why not everything else?
On Mac OS X, Growl provides a system-wide way to notify the user that something has happened without getting in the way. I'd very much like to see Ubuntu adopt something like that.

I recently switched to linux mint, I must say it is very nice and based on gutsy 7.10.
They use the red hat liberation fonts by default and OMG It looks amazing.
The default ubuntu fonts are painful to look at once you know how good it can look.

One of the serious problems in Ubuntu is that Gnome is a bit sluggish when it comes down to the graphics. Try to install AWN and you know that the icons literally look like shit (compared to OSX).
But the problem does not end there, the whole system should be vector graphics by now when it comes to rendering the windows, menus, icons and so on.
I know this is not a Ubuntu feature, but it should be pressed HARD upon so we also get the great crisp sharp user-interface OSX has. It does not make the system slower, just better. With vector graphics, CompizFusion could take a new leap forward since it is then not hold back by the limitations of bitmap images. Also new graphical applications would be easier to develop, see on the mac side where Quartz engine has helped make a sea out of new graphical applications. We need a Quarz engine for Gnome now!
