Updated ISOs to download
Written by programad the 11 Mar 08 at 17:56. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. Implemented
Instead of suggesting a "Service Pack Like" idea, I'm suggesting to update the ISO files at Ubuntu website and mirrors, that way, we can download the ISO with the latest packages and the latest fixes already out of the box.

First of all: What is the difference between Preferences and Administration? For example: why do I see 'Encryption and Keyrings' in Preferences and 'Keyring Manager' in Administration? What is the difference between 'Default Printer' and 'Printing'? Why do I have to disable the Tracker under Sessions and not under Search and Indexing? And why are these menu's so large? I have 24 items in Preferences (they don't even fit on my screen!) and 18 items in Administration. To put all this stuff in a popup menu is bad interface design imho. Besides, the number of option should be much smaller. A few suggestions:

- Merge 'Screensaver', 'Screen Resolution' and 'Screens and Graphics'.
- Merge 'Network', 'Network Proxy' and 'Network Tools'.
- Merge 'Update Manager, Synaptic Package Manager, Software Sources'.
- Merge 'Encryption and Keyrings', 'Authorizations', 'Keyring Manager'.

Below are all settings I can visit via the System menu. This is just way too much.

Bluetooth
Default Printer
Encryption and Keyrings
Keyboard
Keyboard Shortcuts
Main Menu
Mouse
Network Proxy
PalmOS Devices (I don't have one)

Meta-package change...
Written by tenplus1 the 11 Mar 08 at 10:45. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Wouldn't it be wonderful if after installing meta-packages like gnome-games, ubuntu-desktop etc. the package manager would allow you to un-install any of the files inside so-long as it isnt a dependancy...

e.g. You could remove Chess and Soduku without the whole Gnome-Games being removed... and... Gedit and Evolution without the whole of Ubuntu-Desktop being taken away...

This would make it a lot easier to save space and leave packages you want on your computer that will still be updated even if the meta-package is removed...

Less screensavers
Written by programad the 11 Mar 08 at 15:24. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Actually, we have 5 wallpapers, 9 themes and 80+ SCREENSAVERS!!!

WHAT THE HELL!

Who need that amount of screensavers?

I think we should vote five to the default installation, and the other ones comes with a optional package?

Isn't gnome "keep it simple"?

For me just a "dim screen" is enough for default.

Allow deletion of users own ideas

So you make a bad idea that everyone hates.
After awhile it clogs up your "my ideas" page
plus there is no reason to waste space on the servers.

Provide an official live 'gaming' repository

Written by MighMoS the 28 Feb 08 at 16:35. Category: Gaming. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Many games feature the ability to play with other people. However, the first thing the game will check for is to see if it is currently up to date. When Ubuntu enters version freeze, the games fall out of date, and it can be harder to play them online without finding a 3rd party update or compiling it yourself (Freeciv, Scorched3D, and Battle for Wesnoth to name a few). This also creates issues when different distributions freeze at different times, so it can be hard to play with other Linux users.

Ubuntu should provide a repository for up to date games for games that will always need the latest version to play online.

Why there are so many things done twice?
Written by dbg the 12 Mar 08 at 16:30. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Because the Text is very long here a short summery:
In my opinion it is senseless, that there is so much competition inside of open source. There are many projects which are very similar and I think that cronical and the ubuntu foundation as the developer of one of the most popular Linux distributions should plead for the support of communication between the open source projects to give open source a more efficient structure.
Inside of open source there should be no competition, microsoft is enough, and I think if the open source developers would work more efficient together they can produce a very beautiful Linux desktop in the future.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
First of all I really love the idea of Open Source. It is much simpler to communicate with the developers, submit own ideas(e.g. Brainstorm), or to help active, to form his own desktop. Because of this close relationship to the user, I feel much more involved to this project and feels in duty bound to give something back. So I produced an icon theme and submitted some ideas.
It is great to have the freedom to start something new and that there are possibilitys to find people who helps you, but I also think it would be very helpful for open source to make a new structure for more productivity.

I do not understand why there are done so many things twice or more?
When I would look at Open Source like at a company there are so much things which could be done more efficient.

1.Why so many applications of the same categorie. For example the IDEs. There are many IDEs for different programming languages, but either they are complicated (anjuta), have no standard gui builder (eclipse), or are very unstable (mono on my ubuntu desktop). I think it would be more productive if all this IDE developers would work together to build one simple IDE which includes many programming languages and an easy to use gui builder. I know Kdevelop tries that, but I hate the unclear interface structure of many KDE Applications like Kdevelop. I would prefer something more like mono.
A category which also must be mentioned are media players. I do not try to count all the open source media players because there are to much. On a wikipedia side I found a list with ca. 30 audio and video players, but I think there are much more. I know a small assortment should be there, but company's like microsoft or apple has just one media player, Linux not countable. When the developers of some similar media players would work together it would be much more efficient, and would open up so much new possibilitys for the Linux desktop.

Make reporting Ubuntu bugs easier
Written by shadowfirebird the 10 Mar 08 at 10:56. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
You should be able to report a bug by just emailing a support address.

Yes, I know that all I have to do is:
1) Register an account on launchpad
2) Check to see if it's already been raised
3) Raise the bug if not

But: step (2) assumes some technical knowledge, I think, and the whole process assumes that you will willingly join in the process of testing, debugging, and fixing.

I would be the first to laud the whole "all of us in it together" thing, because I'm a Linux nut. But if we really want Ubuntu to be an OS for the people, don't we also have to consider the people for whom this is not practical or desirable, because they lack the expertise, the time, the confidence, or just don't play well in groups? I think we do.

I get tired when trying to change font to another...

I don't need all these arabian, chinese fonts... and fonts that didn't change font look.
Too much fonts that I will never use in the fonts list.

I want it like in windows - just a few!!! (10,15) unicode fonts for everybody with full support of national characters.

Right now, the most likely successful migrations to Ubuntu happen for *nix experts and total novices who have someone install Ubuntu for them, but the most likely people to try Ubuntu are Windows power users--those who like a lot of configuration options but who are also used to using the GUI for tweaking options and not manually editing a text configuration file.

The most popular requests for editing the /boot/grub/menu.lst file involve changing the default boot option (to Windows instead of Ubuntu) and changing the timeout before a boot option is selected. The other less popular ones would be just bonus features, I guess.

Track the amount of Ubuntu computers
Written by eyerouge the 7 Mar 08 at 16:38. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Since we love Ubuntu we also want to know how it fares in the world..

Hence we need some method to keep track of the number of computers that have Ubuntu installed on them, so that the number could be officially displayed at ubuntu.com or wherever.

Exactly how it should be done is up to the people that implements it. There are plenty of easy ways to do this that doesn't violate integrity, and even if this feature comes enabled as default in Ubuntu there should of course also be an option to turn it of if you somehow don't want to have your machine counted.

When I open the System Monitor the program itself needs ~13% of the CPU. This isn't bearable, especially if you think that the System Monitor is mostly used when a program hangs and produces 100% CPU workload or so.

The System Monitor shouldn't burden the CPU in any notable amount.

Eject CD/DVD
Written by jhanely the 30 Apr 08 at 18:27. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. In development
Currently (Hardy Heron) if the user tries to eject a CD which is locked by a process, a pop-up appears saying:

Cannot unmount volume

An application is preventing the volume 'CDROM Volume' from being unmounted.

Sometimes it may be obvious what to do to get your CD back. Close down an app, or whatever. Sometimes there will be no visible application windows, and no way for an average user to get the disk out short of rebooting.

I propose adding a list of locking processes to the pop-up, with an option to close them and eject the disc.

CONS: Users might kill something they didn't mean to.

PROS: The user has complete control, as it should be.

Allow Wubi installs to Remove Windows via Add/Remove

Right now, Wubi allows Windows users to install Ubuntu and, if they no longer need it, uninstall it. However, there is no way to easily uninstall Windows if it is no longer needed any more.

I propose that an item be created in Add/Remove that allows all Windows components to be removed, including having the Windows boot loader replaced entirely by GRUB, leaving the fully functioning Ubuntu installed on an NTFS partition.

Give Ubuntu it's own calendar
Written by amosharper the 28 Feb 08 at 17:11. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
It's great that clicking on the clock brings up a calendar - but why Evolution's calendar?

The majority of people use a webmail service, so having a calendar that can sync with major web calendars (eg Google Calendar, Windows Live Calendar), that is easy to add and remove events to, to add alarms and notifications and to be able to do all of this without opening an email application would be fantastic, I think.

Thanks for the oppurtunity to be heard.

Add Code::Blocks IDE to ubuntu repositories
Written by Sepidar the 7 Mar 08 at 17:05. Category: Programming. Related to: Nothing/Others. Not an idea
As there is almost no lightweight IDE for C++ in ubuntu (and for sure anjuta and kdevelop are not good ones!) i suuggest to add code::blocks IDE to ubuntu repositories. The project already distributes ubuntu-specific compiled versions. It also has a 6-month-release period with date-month versioning system. (like ubuntu)

Let us invest in Ubuntu: 1 to 100 USD monthly plan
Written by mikasjoman the 10 Mar 08 at 12:45. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
We all love Ubuntu, but most of us can not easily participate or just lack the time. So to give Canonical extra speed, I would love to invest 1 to 10 USD a month. With the power of millions of investing users, the money invested could give a push that we can not have today. What about adding 500 chinese or indian low cost developers to the mission? Ill pay. Especially if I could get some return on investment. And, switching users just got a new dimension - then it´s called sales - building up our collective product.
I don´t know if it has to be stocks in Cannonical. There are quite smart people out there that could find other ways I am sure.

Make the Ubuntu sticker thinner
Written by programad the 11 Mar 08 at 01:26. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
The stickers are very big. The LCD monitors borders are thin. We have a problem :-)

-Canonical would save some money with thinner stickers.
-We could stick them to the LCD borders, CD trays, etc.

Create GPG default keys for new users
Written by Thorsten Sick the 7 Mar 08 at 15:34. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
When creating a user create a new key for him. Upload this to the key server. Try to get as much information from the system (mail addresses, photo) as possible.

If a GPG key is created without any effort on adding new users the first barrier for using public key cryptography is no more.
With an automatic upload to the servers it is more likely there is a key for every ubuntu user available. Making EMail encryption reliable.

- The user should be able to correct his personal data before key creation.

- Allow more advanced users to import their old key.

Addition:
The key should be only generated and submited to the servers if the user klicks a "Create Key/Send Key" button in system->settings->personal information (names guessed, I have a german ubuntu ATM). The other version causes privacy issues.
