There is no option to reinstall Ubuntu from network, if you have pc/notebook without cd-rom drive, and playing with alfa versions of Ubuntu, after final release is coming it sometimes necessary to install Ubuntu from scratch.

Use tracker as a backend for everything

Right now photo managers, and music managers crawl the filesystem just like a desktop search engine, and then build their own database. Instead let the desktop search engine do this. Using tracker as a backend would allow users freedom to choose their frontend application, while at the same time keeping all media organized on the filesystem.

Market Ubuntu to Cuba

USA have trade sanctions (Trade Sanctions Reform and Enhancement Act) which forbids the trade with Cuba.
Cuba does not like USA, so its probably not very found of Microsoft either. And with the trade sanctions I guess it can be difficult to get Windows to Cuba.
Market Ubuntu to Cuba. They loose dependency on USA, and Ubuntu's userbase grow. It's a win/win situation.
Proprietary software for their IT industry from a foreign nation which they have bad relations with could be bad for their national security.
Cuba is communistic. They like to share, and so do we.

Add required TTD data files for OpenTTD to a medibuntu package

OpenTTD (Open Transport Tycoon Deluxe) requires some data files from the original TTD, which is freely available i.e. from abandonia.com. So those data files could be added to a package in the Medibuntu repository and be connected to OpenTTD as a (recommended) dependency.
This would make OpenTTD much easier to install and more available to beginners, who like to rediscover fantastic classic games.

Beta Repos?

I think it would be a great idea to create a "Beta Repository" that is only active IF the user enables it. This way, those us who want to take the risk of playing with Firefox 3 and Songbird can just use aptitude on the .deb packages instead of compiling from source.

Multiboot with other flavours of Linux?

I being a sys admin, like to test out the capabilities of different flavours of Linuxes. And I don't have many systems at my disposal. I don't know about Gutsy, but earlier versions of Ubuntu ,all of which I had tried, had a problem with working on existing partitions. It just didn't allow other linux partitions installed before it to co-exist. It used to delete the existing the partitions that are there and it just doesn't want to install on a pre-existing /boot partition. I had to manually do an fdisk and do the needful. I just don't like this thing about Ubuntu. I don't want to say this but FC and Open S... don't have this problem.

The possible duplicates function for idea submission should not be sorted by votes, but by relevance of the keywords.
Why? Because the most relevent, is sometimes -300 votes, which wouldn't even show on the list currently (because there are dozens of ideas with more votes).

Read Option in Right Click Menu

Any file that is text based e.g Open Office documents, PDF, etc should have a read option in the context menu in file browser. If selected, the "Read" option would pass the file to eSpeak (which is installed by default) or Festival depending on user preference, allowing the file to be read aloud.

Automatic testing of ACPI=Force and automatic setting for old computers
|
|
Written by Auzy the 3 Aug 08 at 03:58. Category: Hardware support.
Related to: Nothing/Others.
New
|
|
By default, the Linux kernel will automatically disable ACPI on computers with bios which are older then 2000. However, many of the computers which have ACPI disabled, are in fact ACPI compliant.
I propose we create an online lookup database which ubuntu can check for hardware ACPI compliance, and offer to install ACPI support for computers which support it. A semi-automatic testing tool can be made which is also offered to users with pre-2000 computers, to submit to the database.
At the very least, a checkbox should be offered in the configuration panel, where ACPI can be easily forced and users can be shown their expected success rate. This will also eliminate the need for users to mess with grub.lst, potentially messing up booting entirely to give ACPI=force a try.

Update manager block list of updates and their descriptions while it is working - downloading and installing updates. It will be nice to click install all updates, and then be able to read, for example: what new functions are added to each program.

Borrow ideas from Linux Mint's menu to improve Kickoff

I just started using Kubuntu Intrepid about a week ago after several months of using Linux Mint. I was tired of GNOME's limitations and eager to check out KDE 4.
I think that Kickoff is a huge step above the "classic" menu style. It's more organized, it's modern, and it looks darned good. The one area that Kickoff falls short is...well, features. Linux Mint's MintMenu has a lot of really nice features that I think would work well in Kickoff. They might even help to give Kubuntu the edge and identity that it -still- lacks in Intrepid Ibex.
Here are the ideas I propose, borrowed directly from Linux Mint:
1) Allow users to drag and drop to rearrange favorites. I'm surprised that something this obvious wasn't already included.
2) When you right-click an application, give the user the option to uninstall it.
3) When you right-click an application, give the user the option to set it to run at startup.
I understand that these may not be easy to implement, but hey, they don't have to be done overnight.

move them to closed category.
my suggestion is don't allow single word as idea Title.
like Direct x posted twice and don't allow ideas with no description.
idea #1489: Memory
idea #3796: UbuntuTube: Like You tube but with video tutorials for Ubuntu
idea #4736: Boycott Skype
idea #1642: direct x
idea #2704: direct x
idea #1222: eBay off line listing tool
idea #3911: Ubuntu team up with Apple
idea #2659: Do something that is Fun
idea #2676: Mark Shuttle worth
idea #2279: BUG: UBUNTU USERS ARE (often) DUMB by gvy
idea #1102: Vote only when you comment.
Some ideas (don't call them idea) are just Vague, intentionally done to waste time of others.

Their is a program that shows the earth and you add different layers over it but it seems to be too inadequate. A new one should be made. Although we may not be able to get satellite images we can create a program that shows a digital earth and we can change that map settings from topographical or political. Since we have Linux in many languages we can get lots of help in creating a digital earth.

Add focused window process boost.
So that the active window you are working with get a slightly higher CPU priority.
This will make the system feel faster and more responsive and prevent background applications from slowing down the application you are currently working with.

private / public network toggle

a toggle to turn on/off all deamons that you want on a home network but not on a public one. e.g:
samba (not only do you not want to share your files with joe blogs but it also has several security vulnerabilities)
nfsd (again you probably don't want to be sharing your file)
zeroconfd (this is security through obscurity, but useful for all those little applets that publish to it which haven't been added to the list of programs to stop, YET)
initially this could be done by a script combined with a simple system tray applet
-====-
Later versions could include
*auto toggling based on the network id
*integration into nm-applet GUI
*option for ftp deamons
*gui configuration
*mark all networks unsecure by default, so a default ubuntu computer that hasnt said its on a home network isnt vulnerable to smba or nfs exploits.
*toggling firewall settings as suggested in http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/10314/

Firewall configurations for private/public internet connections
|

For the laptop warriors among us, there should be an option for each network connection on the system that says if it's on a private or public internet connections. Here is how it can be defined:
private: file sharing ports opened and remote access ports opened on the firewall but only on the same subnet
public: all ports closed that would normally be used for file sharing and remote access
It should start out by putting the user through a wizard asking them which one they want to use defaulting to public. But after this, it should remember the network configuration that was used on private and if it changes, prompt the user to go through the wizard again so that those who go to a lot of internet cafe's are protected automatically. The wizard doesn't even need to be long, just a selection of public and private with public selected by default.
