When a user currently boots into the 'recovery mode' from GRUB, they are presented with a command-line interface with complete root privileges and no introduction. This is just not user-friendly by any definition.
With the introduction of bullet-proof X in 8.04, it should be possible to launch some sort of gui no matter what, so how about creating a guided recovery app (in the style of 'ubiquity-only') that goes something like this:
Welcome to the Ubuntu Recovery Helper.
-If you booted into this mode because booting Ubuntu normally doesn't work, press continue.
-If you have booted into this mode by accident, you can reboot your computer and choose the option to load Ubuntu normally.
-If you are an advanced user and would like to go straight to the command-line, press Advanced.
[REBOOT] [ADVANCED] [CONTINUE]
If they press continue:
-If you know approximately what is wrong with your PC, select it below and press Continue.
-If you don't know what is wrong, press I Don't Know.
[]Graphics Card or Monitor
[]Hard Disk
[]Sound
[]etc.
[BACK] [I DON'T KNOW] [CONTINUE]
Selecting Graphics Card or Monitor would launch the X.org configuration utility, with the additional option to 'Autodetect any display hardware changes' (runs "sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xorg-server" or whatever the exact code is). Selecting I Don't Know would launch the same prompt that the hardware database thingie uses, and when an error is reported would go to the appropriate item from the list above.
I'm not going to go through the entire thing, but I'm sure you get the idea. At the moment, Windows recovery mode is just an admin desktop, and Ubuntu is command-line. We're currently behind, but implementing something like this would put us years ahead. It would also make a great 'important feature' for 8.10 (like compiz-fusion was for 7.10). [....]

Simple suggestion:
have something on the firefox start page
(file:///usr/share/ubuntu-artwork/home/index.html)
that says "Get involved in the community! Got an Idea? Join the Ubuntu Idea brainstorm and you may see your idea implemented!"

On old DOS, there was a help command, and people could read the list of commands and how to use them, and what do they do... as a newbie, I get lost with commands in ubuntu, and I have not found a help file. If I make a question in a forum, I get answers, but they still look as "black magic" to me... sure, they work, but I still dont know what did I do, and why did I had to do that...

purge option should be avialable in Update Manager and Add/Remove Programs

When I do an upgrade with Update Manager, many packages get removed from my system, but the configuration files remain. I remember having an issue with Compiz Fusion when I upgraded to Gutsy because the old Beryl configuration files were left by Update Manager. What I would like to see is an option in the preferences of Update Manager and Add/Remove Programs to automatically purge a package instead of merely removing it.

Being a linux noob stuck in command line mode is a real bitch. If thats the only computer you have and you don't know what you are doing, you are really pretty much screwed with no apparent choice but to re-install or go back to Windoze. We lose lots of people like this.
It would be nice if a command was included by default... something like "onlinehelp" that would start IRSSI and then enter into the #Ubuntu channel on Freenode where they could get some much needed help and get their system running again.

Better/easier video card drivers installation and configurability.

I've spent way too many hours on the Ubuntu forum figuring out what to do to install, configure, test and subsequently "try to" roll-back video card drivers.
It's a pain in the freaking neck!
Possible solutions:
- Integrate Envy (as Linux Mint does)
- Develop whole new Envy-like tool
- Add features to the Video Settings dialog, or
- Develop documentation (with visual diagrams) that explains what does what.
Am I alone?
If not, any other possible solutions?

Entering username and password while loading

It could be a little inprovement entering the username and password while ubuntu is being loaded. Now we must wait for ubuntu to load, then enter the username and password and then wait a little more to load everything else.
My idea is haveing two textfields and an "accept" button in the splash screen so we can enter the username and password there. The checking could be done automatically once ubuntu is loaded.

Integrate the Trash bins on different disk partitions

Currently, whenever you delete a file from another disk partition, it gets shifted to a trash bin of it's own in the other disk. It's very laborious to navigate to the partition, track down the trash folder and then manually delete the files again. Although shift+delete also solves the problem, it's just another unnecessary complication.

Another Brainstorming Search Order

"Most Popular Ideas" is not necessarily the most useful search. It could be that these ideas have been around a long time, so have had more votes.
I would rename the current "Most Popular" to "Most Voted For" and make the "Most Popular" list report the order in (# of votes over time listed). This would allow very recent posts that are getting a lot of votes to appear at the top of the list.
Otherwise, the newer posts seem to slide into oblivion on the "Latest Ideas" search, regardless of actual user interest.

Make it possible to mark applications "Disable Compiz when running"

In development

This is what I want:
I want to be able to mark applications "Not Compiz compatible" so that Compiz shuts down when I launch a game or some other 3D-heavy application. This is something I want to improve stability and performance for such applications.
Developer comments
This will be automatically fixed with the arrival of DRI2 and updated drivers. There is no point in adding a plugin or workaround like suggested. The caveat here is that the initial support for DRI2 is only for intel's i915 at the moment... maybe with i965 following shortly thereafter.
When the OpenSource drivers for ATI (radeon, radeonHD) and nVIDIA (nouveau) will support DRI2 is still unknown. But the only way to fix the mentioned bugs is via DRI2. There is not much action that can come from our (Canonical) side as we don't have any experienced upstream Xorg developer in our team.

Make it easier/possible to donate money to Ubuntu

I can't say that I have seen a way to donate money to Ubuntu's development, but there definitely should bee a way too do so..
My idea is to have a button under "About Ubuntu" where you navigate to a web page were donation is possible.
Many Ubuntu fans who don't have time or skills to contribute in other ways would like this option.

Won't implement
|
|
Sometimes it's unconfortable when you're searching some files (for example when compiling and installing a program) and when you are "inside" the folder in the file manager, you want to compile. You need the terminal.
So, you need to reach the folder and reach that folder typing all the way to do it, and it's very tedious when the program name is too long.
I suggest that in the menu (File menu) it would appear an item called "Open Terminal in this folder" or simply "Open terminal".
Developer comments
This used to be available by default in GNOME but it was a conscious design decision to remove it by default. There are no plans to implement this by default in Ubuntu.

The rescue mode pose a great problem because if you boot into this mode you get a full acces (root@computer:) without typing any password or something. Quite dangerous!
