Regenerate nautilus thumbnails
Written by kinginsan the 29 Feb 08 at 14:43. Global category: Look and Feel. New
Sometimes nautilus doesn't generate thumbnails
correctly. It would be nice if these could be regenerated easily somehow or even done right the first time! :-)

placement of yes/no buttons in gnome
Written by KhaaL the 25 Mar 08 at 10:25. Global category: Look and Feel. New
When you're represented with a yes / no / cancel buttons in KDE, it's presented as:

Yes, no, cancel.

In windows these buttons are displayed in the same order as KDE.

In gnome, the placement is no, cancel, yes.

Now this is *quite* confusing for those who're used to diffrent placement, not to mention the times they'll press the wrong buttons by old habit. I suggest to offer a choice to the users of which placement they'd rather have.

Solution #2: add icons next to text
Written by zroo3d the 17 May 10 at 10:01.
To prevent mistakes add colored icons next to "yes" and "no". Like green "j" and red cross.

Top Secret Folder 'Vault'. A better way to Hide files.
Written by fordplay the 25 Mar 08 at 12:21. Global category: Security. New
I think that hiding files in ubuntu should be easiler and better. I'm suggesting a default folder in a users directory and places called 'Vault'.

The 'Vault' folder will be encryted, and the contents hidden and non-indexable by trackers.

For a user to add a file or folder to the 'Vault they simply right click the file or folder and select send to Vault or drag to Vault in their places menu. To retrieve a file the user would click on the place name and input their password.

The user should be stopped from using their login password as their Vault password.

From a coding / devoplement point of view and sure that the source code of true crypt could be useful for getting this feature into ubuntu.

EDIT: My idea isn't to use this instead of full drive encryption. Instead it's to make a great hidden files area that happends to offer a some encryption options. Somewhere to put the pictures from your stag do, or your home movie collection without installing a state of the art crypto program and learning how to use it.

EDIT EDIT: I've noticed a similar idea posted on Brainstorm which is implemented a lot better. Please vote for that one instead.

Replace Usplash with RedHat Graphical Boot (RHGB)
Written by moomex the 25 Mar 08 at 08:34. Global category: System. Won't implement
Red Hat Graphical Boot provides a clean and simple interface to the boot process

It's more than just a splash screen. It's real.
It shows a real progress bar.
It also allows you to maximize a window that displays the boot log.
It actually opens it automatically if there is a failure.
The reason why it's pretty is because it is running XOrg.
It's a special Xorg just for it which is turned off after a successful boot.

Take a look at:
http://ubuntuforums.org/g/images/430615/1_rhgb.png

Developer comments
As others have commented, RHGB is going to be deprecated in favor of Plymouth, so is not something we would transition to from usplash in any case.

In edubuntu-desktop-kde, use Kolourpaint instead of Gpaint
Written by maybeway36 the 24 Mar 08 at 19:29. Global category: Education. Not an idea
The edubuntu-desktop-kde metapackage should refer to kolourpaint instead of gpaint. Gpaint is a GNOME application, while kolourpaint is KDE-based. Why include a GNOME-based program with the KDE version? It's not even in the GNOME version!

java-gnome 4.x
Written by benefactor the 16 Mar 08 at 11:08. Global category: Programming. Not an idea
The version of the java-gnome bindings in the repository is currently at 2.x. The package description text says:

"Please be aware that this package is part of java-gnome 2.x series which is deprecated"

The web site says:

"In 2006, a complete re-engineering of the bindings was initiated, and that work has resulted in: java-gnome 4.0"
http://java-gnome.sourceforge.net/

Ubuntu should provide java-gnome 4.x

Currently open locations in file chooser
Written by jimmux the 23 Mar 08 at 02:51. Global category: Others. New
This one might take a little explaining to get the idea across clearly. Basically, it would be useful if the file chooser had an additional location under the "Places" pane which contains all the folders which are currently open in the file browser.

So for example, I might be working on some project involving a number of files, all stored in some folder. I need to create an image for this project, so I start up Inkscape and start drawing. When I go to save this file I would normally have to navigate through a possibly long directory structure to my project folder. It would be very nice if the file chooser recognised that I have a folder open and list it as a shortcut under the "Places" pane.

Make icon bounding boxes optional
Written by Warbo the 25 Mar 08 at 01:54. Global category: Look and Feel. New
In Nautilus an icon with completely transparent areas can be selected by clicking in a transparent area. The old behaviour was to make transparent areas invisible to clicks, so that things underneath could be clicked on. I realise that from a usability perspective having a bounding box is a good idea, but I think that for those (like me) who want to fit as much in view as possible an option could be put somewhere in Gconf to switch between the old way and the new way.
