The dialog should say why (which package that required it).

Did you know Ubuntu is not a word in Firefox's spell check, yet Microsoft is? Can we please have this word included by default?

Ubuntu Cursor Loading icon
Written by longlivethebestos the 27 Oct 08 at 20:32. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
When i click on something a loading icon will appear next to my cursor (Obviously) ;D.

I think that the loading icon shouldn't be a circle going round and round but should be the Ubuntu logo.

with maybe each third glowing/lighting up until the thing you clicked on has loaded or you can have the Ubuntu logo going round and round.

Either way I think it would look much better and support the new 8.10 theme: Dark Room.

Layer based desktop?
Written by animesh1978 the 28 Oct 08 at 01:54. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I was thinking if it makes sense to have Layers on the desktop to segregate and re-arrange files/icons/programs.

For example, an office layer will have all the productivity software icons and a media layer will have all the entertainment software icons.

A quick drop down box can be used to switch between the layers. One can also have the option to enable or disable it.

Some segregation can be done using multiple desktops, but all icons appear in all the desktop areas.

Make animation faster in 2 times
Written by Emacs23 the 21 Oct 08 at 08:25. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Compiz. New
Current compiz default animation seems to me too slow - it force you to pay attention to animation. When it's speed is increased in 2 times, you stop to catch sight of it, but feel its smoothness.

Windows software compatibility
Written by PrimeFactor the 29 Feb 08 at 05:59. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I love Ubuntu. I think it's a superior, reliable, efficient operating system.

But the biggest reason I don't run it all that often? Software availability - there are too many packages that I depend upon in winXP that I can't (reasonably easily) run in Ubuntu. Photoshop. Some games. Etc. I know there are analogs of many of these in Linux, but we may need the real thing. I don't see too many photo tutorials for the GIMP vs. Photoshop, for example.

If we want Ubuntu to gain wide acceptance we need better commercial software availability. I see two possible answers; I'm not sure whether either of them are specifically about the *core OS*:

- Work with major SW manufacturers to make Ubuntu/Linux versions. Games, photoshop, etc. Now that Dell sells Ubuntu, we need to get the SW end mobilized to gain OS acceptance.
- A better emulator than WINE. Sorry, it's too hard to use and I should be able to install a Windows SW package in Ubuntu in some virtual layer just like its running XP - but without an XP license.

The OS is pretty damn good as it is. Get the SW availability up and you've got major momentum for its adoption.

Easy config for wine and xen and vmware etc....
Written by mathis94 the 10 Mar 08 at 13:21. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I have a lot of softwares who dont work with ubuntu and the softwares like wine, xen, vmware are complex to use, configure and install for a beginner !

So it will be nice if we have, in a simple interface, some fields to put our serial and the software who will configurate and install automaticaly themselves!

For example :

- I want to run photoshop :
i put my serial photoshop : 11111-22222-33333-444444
Ubuntu check if its a good serial and install and configure my photoshop on my desktop with wine!

- I want to run windows
i put my serial photoshop : 11111-22222-33333-444444
Ubuntu check if its a good serial and install and configure my windows on my desktop with xen or vmware !

PS : sorry for my english

Make Symphony OS an official Ubuntu project
Written by goodevilgenius the 2 Mar 08 at 15:58. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Symphony OS is an Ubuntu-derived distro with a unique desktop environment. It's still in beta stage, but with some help from the Ubuntu project, it could become very usable.

Here are some links on it:
http://www.symphonyos.com/
http://www.symphonyos.com/wiki/index.php/Main_Page
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Symphony_OS

I propose that Symphony OS become an official Ubunutu distro alongside Xubuntu, Kubuntu, and Edubuntu, and all it's packages become installable from Ubuntu repos, so that users of the other desktops can simply do a "apt-get install mezzo-desktop" to easily install it.

Shut down computer when update complete option
Written by bogdan_5844 the 13 Mar 08 at 17:17. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I hate it when I have to do a lenghty update(such as when first installing Ubuntu)but being in a rush and not having enough time to wait for the PC to update in order to shut it down.

I suggest a "Shut down computer when update complete" option in Ubuntu Update Manager.

Speed-up Nautilus
Written by zaryk the 29 Feb 08 at 15:57. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Nautilus is curently very slow especially when opening folders containing many files and sub-folders.

It takes 10 seconds for example to display /usr/bin directory with Athlon XP 2500+ CPU and 512 MB RAM machine. Thunar does the action with no lag on the same configuration.

E.g. synaptic could provide a history of what has been installed when along with the possiblity to remove it again.
Fore the people who sometimes evaluate software and afterwards want to remove it again (alon with all installed dependencies)

e.g.

Installed yesterday:
at 5:21pm (_remove_)
Selected
OpenOffice.org
Selected dependencies
Java (1 package depends on Java, _see list_)

Installed two days ago:
at 12:12pm (_remove_)
Selected
GIMP

at 2:59pm (_remove_)
Selected
Gnucash
Selected dependencies
AQbanking (2 packages depends on AQbanking, _see list_)
libchipcard (1 package depends on libchipcard, _see list_)

I dislike a lot that the system makes a hidden folder "/trash" in the USB, floppy and others ... The erasure should be direct in these elements because it is very confusing to have this hidden folder storing it erases not even know it

Support extra keys on advanced USB keyboards
Written by muecker the 4 Mar 08 at 17:22. Category: Hardware support. Related to: Nothing/Others. Not an idea
I have a Logitech LX-710 keyboard with a bunch of extra function keys, most of which I cannot program. I had a different keyboard before this one and the same was true. I can program the audio keys (which work by default) and the calculator key, but most others do not work. It would be great if Linux would generate scan codes for those extra keys so I could assign commands to them. The same is true of special mouse buttons.

One program I tried works with non-USB keyboards but claimed that kernel support was required for USB keyboards. Strangely, Enlightment recognizes quite a few more of the extra keys than Gnome does.

Developer comments
Some of the extra keys can be mapped in xkeyboard-config, but the more exotic ones produce scancodes which are over the limit that X can use, so they need to be quirked in the kernel. Just file bugs instead. If xev shows the keycode, the keycode can be added to xkeyboard-config. If not, the kernel needs to be fixed first.

Font Repository with a User-Friendly GUI

Ubuntu should include a way to add/remove fonts from a repository just like the add/remove program panel. When a user needs a new font, they could open up the window, and the program would download the latest repository fonts. The user could look through the fonts and choose which ones to install by simply checking a box and clicking "apply." A user could search for font keywords to find certain styles of fonts. For example, someone could search for keywords words "serif","sans serif","cursive", and the GUI would display fonts that match the search. This would be a killer tool for designers.

Furthermore, the GUI could be very helpful. When a user browses a font, a sample image of it could be automatically loaded so that the user can quickly find fonts that are appealing to them. A rating system or popularity gauge could be used so that the best fonts can be highlighted.

A tool like this would create inscentive for font designers to make their designs free/public. Credits could be given to designers in the font descriptions.

- memory (with manufacture model?)
- graphics card (model, memory)
- chipsets (processor, cores, lan, wifi)
- ... others?

Ubuntu's bootloader is a stark black and white screen, filled with confusing options. It gives newbies a moment of indecision, as they try to figure out if they are supposed to choose something, and wonder why there are three or four Ubuntus listed. Then the timer finishes counting down (starting from 10), and the newb begins to feel like he's getting in over his head as his PC boots into Ubuntu.

Too much information up front, stark text-only display, painfully long countdown timer. What would be the alternative? Well, when a Fedora PC is booted up, the first thing the user sees is a graphical splash screen, and "Booting into Fedora (kernel version) in 4 seconds ... " The user can press a key to interrupt and select from kernel versions or alternative operating systems, or just let it boot into Fedora.

Can't we create our own attractive bootloader? Or, failing that, copy-and-paste Fedora's?

Add simple sound effects features to Sound Recorder (gnome-sound-recorder).

It can only record audio.

In the Sound Recorder in Windows, you could modify the recorded audio with sound effects ever since Windows 95.

With effects such as increase/decrease volume, increase/decrease playback speed, add echo effect, reverse the clip.
