Extend ELF with metadata

I propose to extend ELF (Executable and Linking Format) with support for metadata.
Possible metadata included could be software version, developer and description, etc. Perhaps URL and license.
Example for the file 'gvfsd';
- Description: GNOME virtual file system daemon
- Developer: GNOME
- Version: 0.99.4
- License: GPL
This would provide the necessary back-end functionality to implement ideas such as idea 11205.

Make Ubuntu look better

Ubuntu is not (imo) the best looking OS out there, not even close to. I have som ideas to make Ubuntu look great.
Ideas:
* SVG icons.
* A theme that apply to EVERY application.
* More then just human theme.
* Better menus. Like the KDE4 or OpenSUSE menu.
* More then just a brown wallpaper included.
* Fresh up the look of synaptic, make it look like "Install or Uninstall programs", maybe a Apple influenced theme.
* Just one activity bar, like in Windows.
* Not just a blank activity bar, make it look more like Windows or at least make it look better.
* Stop making the screen flicker when starting up, like in Fedora ( think it was called X11 fst or something like that)
* Nicer icon theme, like Crashbit on gnome-look.
Well that just a few of my thoughts about how to make Ubuntu look better.

Officially depreciate usage of Reiser4/ReiserFS

Its time to officially depreciate Reiser4/ReiserFS. The lead developer of Namesys is in jail, and has just shown police the body. So there is no longer any chance that the jailing was a mistake.
With Hans Reiser out of the picture, namesys will likely collapse into bankrupsy, and the code will likely be removed from the kernel eventually because it is unlikely to be maintained.
Its time to start our migration away from Reiser's filesystem by warning users of the risks of using it, and mark it as depreciated. This does not mean we will remove it ourselves (as it is still part of the kernel), it just means we don't recommend it.

I know the Idea sound stupid . first time it hit me I said to my self what stupid idea too, but let me explain please
The first thing windows users said when you tell them about Linux/Ubuntu is "it is hard, u need to learn commands to use it" and they don't understand that 95% of the time we use CLI because we love it.
imagine this title in Ubuntu website "Ubuntu 8.10 is so easy you don't need terminal any more" thats will encourage windows people to try it, and for all of old Ubuntu users I'm sure if you know how to use CLI you will know how to install it

Allow a MS-free Ubuntu remix

Can you allow people to opt-out of endangering things like the MS codec tax implicit in remix? just like it seems to happen with real player?
http://www.canonical.com/netbooks
Look at:
"† Choice of one media player
* Only available with Real Player "
I want the same for windows media codecs, I don't want MS to receive money for software they didn't make, I must say that I am quite turned down a bit by this, it is a bad precedent to see Canonical to paying a MS tax in such a critical project as Remix.
While we are at it, could we have an ubuntu remix that's as decent as the real ubuntu in regards to freedom? As in... you need to opt-in in order to install restricted stuff? I don't want things to get over expensive because I am paying for things like flash or adobe reader or MS' codecs. In all seriousness, aren't there FOSS PDF readers for portables? That thing got even open office so...

Hi guys!
packagekit gets more and more attraction, i don't think that i have to explain it here, someone who knows this page knows also packagekit and its possibilities i.e. share package discribtions & news, openoffice.org can use it for the installation from additional packages/art; automatic printer driver download from lsb-site and so on...
more here:

and a really hot presentation from fosdem08:

Developer comments
The use of PackageKit for Ubuntu is targeted for the Intrepid Ibex! See the attached blueprint for more informations.

* The splash screens for startup and shutdown: They are so simple and minimal that I wish more things of the artwork well like that. They also do work and look good. Please don't change them, at least not brutally, I think it is better to invest time on more important things.
* The same goes for the sounds, they are so nice and original, I love the drums and the clock! Please, don't change them just because a brainstorm post appears saying they are updated, who cares? They work and they are nice.

While the default Ubuntu theme in Gnome is OK, there is room for A LOT more refinement. I would like to see things like:
- Beautiful icons like those in OSX
- Cutting edge, highly readable fonts
I would especially like to see tremendous attention to detail paid to all kinds of small things, such as default icons, etc. Much of this may come in the form of enhancements to the default Gnome/KDE themes.
There is just something incredibly pleasing about the look of OSX, and Ubuntu deserves to look at least as good.
With the right input from top designers, this is possible.

Image right-click "Set as background image"

When you right-click on an image file nautilus should give you an option to set the picture as your wallpaper instead of having to open the image in a viewer and then select "set as desktop wallpaper" or having to browse for the image manually, that's just three clicks more than it has to be.
Personally I'm supprised to see that this option has not yet found it's way into the Ubuntu desktop, maybe others agree on this.
Nautilus can already distinct image files from other types of files, this should be a simple shell implementation right?

Like the not supported Backports, with latest IDE's and recommended development tools.
Actual Versions especially in _Gutsy_ are outdated and lacks of needed Features. (Hardy is unusable in this time [for me])
Examples:
Monodevelop (C/C++ is in MD 1.0)
Eclipse (Eclipse is 3.2 actually 3.4)
Netbeans (Netbeans is 5.5 actually 6, better GTK integration more features)
OpenJDK (more stable than icedtea)
Vala (totally outdated 0.1.6 actually 0.3.2)
...

Remove Firefox extensions from repositories

Firefox extensions are a pain to maintain in the repositories, and very often lag behind when updating them. They should be removed as they are EXTREMELY easy to install from Firefox itself.
Ubufox may be an exception due to its nature though.
If you liked this idea, check out my other ideas.
