Clean up Preferences and Administration.
Launchers under "System > Preferences" and "System > Administration" have similar names, leads to confusion. (#174277)

First of all: What is the difference between Preferences and Administration? For example: why do I see 'Encryption and Keyrings' in Preferences and 'Keyring Manager' in Administration? What is the difference between 'Default Printer' and 'Printing'? Why do I have to disable the Tracker under Sessions and not under Search and Indexing? And why are these menu's so large? I have 24 items in Preferences (they don't even fit on my screen!) and 18 items in Administration. To put all this stuff in a popup menu is bad interface design imho. Besides, the number of option should be much smaller. A few suggestions:
- Merge 'Screensaver', 'Screen Resolution' and 'Screens and Graphics'.
- Merge 'Network', 'Network Proxy' and 'Network Tools'.
- Merge 'Update Manager, Synaptic Package Manager, Software Sources'.
- Merge 'Encryption and Keyrings', 'Authorizations', 'Keyring Manager'.
Below are all settings I can visit via the System menu. This is just way too much.

Encryption and Keyrings

adobe flash has become ridiculously slow. it's perverse that i can play a dvd in full screen mode and that uses about 5% of my processor, while as a small flash window on youtube stutters. as well as this, there is of course no 64-bit version, or a version for sparc/powerpc under linux.
the solution is obvious--gnash must be developed. could canonical/ubuntu invest some development time in getting gnash working well? that would be great :)

Hi guys!
packagekit gets more and more attraction, i don't think that i have to explain it here, someone who knows this page knows also packagekit and its possibilities i.e. share package discribtions & news, openoffice.org can use it for the installation from additional packages/art; automatic printer driver download from lsb-site and so on...
more here:
http://packagekit.org/
and a really hot presentation from fosdem08:

Developer comments
The use of PackageKit for Ubuntu is targeted for the Intrepid Ibex! See the attached blueprint for more informations.

Extend ELF with metadata
|

I propose to extend ELF (Executable and Linking Format) with support for metadata.
Possible metadata included could be software version, developer and description, etc. Perhaps URL and license.
Example for the file 'gvfsd';
- Description: GNOME virtual file system daemon
- Developer: GNOME
- Version: 0.99.4
- License: GPL
This would provide the necessary back-end functionality to implement ideas such as idea 11205.

Not an idea

If Ubuntu wants to be a serious operating system they need to fix video playing on sites like Youtube and such. My browser always crashes and it is very annoying having to force quit all the time.

To set your system sounds, you need to go to "System" -> "Preferences" -> "Sounds" and set all of them manually. How about a universal sound "theme"?

Edit (2008-05-13T02:06):
add more needed reason. screenshot shortcut key is not easy to notice. if in icon menu with shortcut key, it's easy to notice.

Ubuntu developer documentation center website

What if the API documentation and specs for all the development packages available in Ubuntu would be gathered in a common website?
On top of that, it would be possible to link articles, blog posts describing some coding example related to a given lib.
An example of the website organization:
* hardy
* gutsy
** Audio
** Kernel
** GUI
*** Qt
*** GTK+
**** API docs
**** specs
**** links to external code sample
The main goal of this idea is to lower the barrier for new contributing coders by making an easy access to all the docs, samples, specs, helloworlds in a single place.
On the server side, this should somehow be automatic, to make needed human interaction as mimimum as possible.
